IMO the problem with Miles is that no one really knows quite what to do with him. He's clearly designed to be a "Legacy Character", and it's worked out for him in the movies, but in everything else he exists right alongside Peter which fricks that up, so he's constantly being switched around between being his own thing and being Peter's glorified sidekick.
