Typical Hickman comic. There's never a story, just mountains of autism to make you think there's one.
He's all about the premise and never goes to any interesting place with it. But a good premise alone still puts this head and shoulders above almost any Spider-man comic in like 12 years.

Felicia will definitely be introduced. Her attraction to Spider-Man will definitely be a factor, but the moment masks are off, problems will definitely happen.
As for MJ, I liked Spinneret. And since Peter will definitely put his family in danger as Spider-Man, he's going to need some "insurance" to make sure his family won't be defendless.
Besides, I can imagine May and Richard loving the idea of their parents being superheroes.

They made this in Earth-616 when MJ fought to protect her "children", but they did the stupidity of Jackpot's powers. Powers that not only are unpredictable but can be ridiculous as well.

Being a fashionista fits MJ's character. 616 MJ repaired the suits for Peter all the time when they were married. Take it a step further. MJ could even make him some other more specialized suits when needed. They could even work on the together, with Peter incorporating tech.
It would also serve nicely when the symbiote comes around. If Peter has MJ's full support and is always running around in the suit she made, it's like there's always this extra layer of connection between the two. Like every time Peter sees his reflection in that suit, he remembers his wife loves him.
But when he gets a fancy alien suit that makes him out to be a dick that's becoming distant from his family, the suit not being MJ's would become symbolic of the distance between them caused by this god damn alien goo monster.

What makes this period the worst though is on top of the current run being total dogshit and going out of its way to character assassinate as many people as possible, there's nothing even to enjoy outside of that.

Not liking what a character did in a story doesn’t make it character assassination.
What would make it character assassination?
Something like what they’ve done with Beast or Bishop during his KILL HOPE era. Something that renders character borderline unusable and fails to justify and logically explain the actions in the story. Even then you can argue mishandling rather than character assassination.
Scarlet Witch in the 00s is the closest thing to a proper character assassination that’s been done to a character because it was egregious change, poorly established and handled all the way through as it just used her as a plot prop while damaging her usability, went through numerous retcons and subsequent attempts to rehabilitate the character that didn’t work and hasn’t until very recently been able to somewhat recover from it, largely due to Disassembled/House of M being so long ago that people don’t think about them anymore.
You cannot argue that Ben Reilly has not been character assassinated. "He went crazy" is not a justifiable reason for such a 180 in character, and to seriously use it twice is just insulting. His "turn" at the end of Beyond wasn't even consistent between issues. End of issue 92 Ben is telling himself that he's not gonna go down bad and that he'll hold on for Janine then the very next fricking issue he's fighting Peter and trying to kill him.
And that's not even going into Dark Web, where every single character involved has to ignore the blatantly obvious solution to Ben's problem for no other reason other than the fact that the writers want Ben to stay evil. They don't even address it then knock it back with some flimsy excuse. That dogshit event was written the express intent of shitting on Ben's character because Lowe hates him

Meanwhile Wanda is a prime example of someone being character assassinated because it was a complete asspull without proper build up or development that turned her into a plot device with no real agency for years.
Ben being dead for two decades, getting resurrected and turning crazy from the abuse before finally taking over and functioning as a twist villain is the type of thing that capeshit that is handled well because being out of circulation and coming back from the dead gives you the license to change the character dramatically and it was given adequate explanation. I don’t care for this villain stuff because his brain got fricked direction but it is following something that makes a degree of sense, it is been given proper development and him acting mental is actively addressed and shown to be an issue with the character in-story. That pretty much describes everything that has happened with Ben since he was brought back. We have pretty damning evidence that it was malicious, and it certainly wasn't justified. In all of them there's a turning point where they haven't quite has Ben go from "good" to "bad" so they have him perform some insane leap in logic, with "well he's crazy" being a band-aid applied over the top

The entire story was stupid and incoherent, like Dr. Strange claiming chaos magic doesn’t exist. Ben meanwhile was presumed dead, which already gives you tons of leeway, and his Jackal persona kept appearing quite a while building the twist reveal, after which you actually got a lengthy and detailed explanation for everything which was plausible and not an asspull. Ben also has agency throughout his villain turn. Wanda was just turned into a schizo plot device with no agency and couldn’t be used as a character for a long time due to the baggage. Again something that hasn’t been an issue with Ben.

Defalco was a great editor for spidey overall tbh
DeFalco was editor during the Shooter years. Post-Shooter it was Salicrup (good) and Fingeroth (50/50 because he gave us JMD's Spectacular run but also a ton of mandated shit), Budiansky (in over his head,) and Macchio (got us out of the clone saga and gave us another JMD run and then massively shit the bed with the Gathering of the Five and the Mackie/Byrne run but at least he gave us Jenkins before he left).
Shooter was EIC and he was editor of the spidey books immeadetley post shooter, the call to keep the marriage fell on him. But honestly barring macchio all of those were fairly solid as editors. And even macchio's biggest issue was a scaled down version of what quesada would later do.
And i mean, quesada's (and wacker and breevrot)'s edited spidey was cosntently worse than that. It was 10 years of nothing but shit, 3 years of a small respite, then back to shit.

Jonah is just being himself with Spider-Man removed from the equation. He gives the same journalism ethics speech in every appearance he has outside Spider-Man. He gave it to Ben Ulrich last year in X-Men.
And Uncle Ben is being set up to still die and give Jonah a reason to hate Spider-Man, just like the original origin, Peter seems to be becoming a hero for the wrong reasons and will probably get uncle ben killed and then get his proper heroic motivation.

Anon, Hickmans been getting gassed up way before Spidey. His F4 onwards have been long streak of him being the go to writer for reinventing characters, F4, Avengers, Ultimate 1610, X-Men and now Spidey
Look at the stories he's mainly known for. About the only thing you know about him writing Spider-Man is from reading his F4/FF run and Marvel Comics #1000, but that wasn't gonna be a guarantee that he'd have gotten a large audience on board with this.
On top of that there was a mixed reaction to Ultimate Invasion/Universe combined with the people who started reading this new USM, not even bothering to have read it. I'll grant you that there was way more confidence in him writing Spider-Man than there was Bendis (who hadn't written mainstream before USM), but still.
His indie hits are all pretty loved, and for what it’s worth, his Avengers was one of the biggest inspirations for the movies.

I understand perfectly well. It's a book that exclusively panders to people who have been reading Spider-Man for decades and no one else. If this were someone's first issue, they would not continue buying future issues. It's as anti-Quesada as it gets (an older married Spider-Man and a setting and premise that's the complete opposite of new-reader-friendly that the original Ultimate line started as) which is an interesting experiment to observe from afar, but I don't care for it.
It's not insufferable like Wells's Amazing has been, but when it comes to books with Spider-Man in the title, I'm finding what's happening in Superior more interesting to read about than what's happening here.

you've been living in some sort of weird hole, anon. Most #1 get second printings, bigger series get them for later issues as well. Sometimes ASM or such can even stretch to third printings. Now, you can question if that's a real thing and what metric Marvel is working with, but as presented, it happens all the time.
If you underprint, it's painfully easy to get a "2nd printing". The problem is on Marvel not saying how many units they sold. G.I. Joe: A Real American hero #301 did 50k which is good. Only reason to hide numbers is cause they aren't good.

what is the difference between ultimate and amazing and new ultimate and new amazing spiderman comics? i only ever watched the show in the 90s but i got too intimidated to pick up the comic because i didn't even know where to begin with all these versions and i also don't want to have to go back to the 1940s to follow what's happening more in modern times? is there maybe a more mature and grittier run of Spiderman?
This is a soft reboot of the Ultimate line and basically all you need is a passing familiarity with Spider-Man to get the gist of it. The universe specific details get filled out in the issue itself
Amazing Spider-Man is the main continuity set in the main universe so it's the Peter who's story started from 1962 by Stan Lee/Steve Ditko (sliding timeline though so he's perpetually late 20s in the story). Since comicbooks are a serial collaborative medium, the series takes on different tones and feelings depending on who's writing it, but it's pretty commonly agreed that the current Amazing Spidey run is shit and out of character who acts like a caricature. The new Ultimate line of comics is an alternate universe version of the characters. Ultimate Spider-Man is about a universe where Peter was never bitten by the spider as a teenager (the big bad of the story prevented this from happening in order to make the world in his image). He's a married mid 30s adult here, and only now is he getting superpowers. So it's definitely a different take and from how the first issue went, seems to be a bit more grounded and mature in the writing.
If you want a mature and gritty Spidey run set in the main universe though, I would check out J.M. Demeteis's run in the 80s (Kraven's Last Hunt, etc.), Mark Millar's Marvel Knights Spider-Man run, and (arguably) Strazinsky's run (before One More Day fricks it all up, skip that storyline - it retcons MJ and Peter's marriage in the dumbest way and many would argue is what started the shitty pattern of Amazing Spider-man comics since then)
For gritter Spider-Man you want Spectacular Spider-Man from 1983ish till about 1988. It's basically Spider-Man but a cop procedural or Spider-Man vs Wolverine 1987, which is Spider-Man in cold war berlin not played for laughs, except for one joke which is the funniest joke in Spider-Man history and finally Kraven's Last Hunt from 1989, an evergreen Spider-Man tale, with a serious dark tone.
I know no one cares right now (I don't either; the storyline's been such a bore), but I'll post Amazing Spider-Man #42 here and not bother making a new thread

I really enjoyed it. I loved the original Ultimate Comics lines and collected them religiously. this new take by Hickman is giving me everything I've been wanting from Spidey since the OMD fiasco. I also really enjoy how the world has been remixed and changed around.
It's funny because it's an open secret Marvel was just bullshitting until they finalized the deal with Hickman to launch the Krakoa era, so the Rosenberg run was just an outrage-filler gap. Nothing makes Wells' seem otherwise. They even started the same way with a weekly buildup with a bunch of writers, basing it off a prominent figure in the 90s (Nate Grey/Ben Reilly).

I'm kinda new to comics but considering picking this up as my first physical comic since I hear it's good and the writer has a lot of good faith. From looking there doesn't seem to be anywhere that sells the original cover near me, only variant covers. Is this a normal thing where if you don't pre-order you can't get the original cover? I feel like it would annoy me if I did start collecting these and I just had one cover that didn't match the rest.

I haven't read anything Spider-Man related since the Venom: License to Kill run when I was a little kid. I really liked the first chapter, I found it oddly refreshing to have a Spider-Man story where Spider-Man is literally only in it for a single page.

Quesada said everything in Spider-Man happened except for the baby. Peter and MJ were just living together without making it legally official. It wasn't even the first time the clone saga was referenced post-OMD.

ASM went from an okay selling book to a top 10 selling book pretty much solely from Spencer teasing undoing OMD in his first issue. There is obviously a massive fan demand for it, and USM has that, plus a fresh start on Spider-man when the main title is insanely controversial AND it's being helmed by an incredibly popular Marvel writer.
