It’s especially odd as the sequel trilogy was a failure and it’s impossible to imagine anyone at Disney really thinks audiences want 3 more Rey films.

        Not only that but like...
        Rey?

        Rey though?
        Fricking Rey?

Like nobody cares about Rey. She's not a standout character. People weren't clamouring for more Rey. She's as much a mascot for this franchise as Captain Marvel is for the MCU. Which is not at all. She went through 3 movies without a single discernible character trait.

If you want to bring her back in a new project and give her more depth and rework that character, that's fine. That makes sense to want to do. But she should not be the protagonist of the entire saga going forward because she simply cannot carry these movies. There's nothing interesting about her.

TLJ shill here. I liked Rey a lot in the first two movies, but the last one killed any enthusiasm I had for the character. Rise of Skywalker was so bad it even upset the people who were still on board with the sequels at that point, and the people they were trying to win back had already completely written off the sequels.

Who is a Rey-led NJO movie even for?

We might be at the point where they only movies that Hollywood will make with the ailing franchises are the very "woke" ones. Everyone knows Star Wars need to take a long hiatus, but that would mean a bunch of otherwise unemployable buttholes would be out of a job. Making a woke movie means the bean-counters are too scared to tell them no allowing those buttholes to have a job for a couple more years.
Pretty sure this is the last round of movies that will work with, tho.

      >flops

The only one that didn't profit/break even was Han Solo's movie. Disney assumes that the 18-30 male demographic is a lock and key, so they're going out of their way to attract women who only care about movies if the lead is also a woman. Men don't care the sex of the lead, so our opinion comes second. Vidya developers noticed this trend lately and have started pumping out female lead games for that reason.

        >The only one that didn't profit/break even was Han Solo's movie
The rest still severely underperformed, not justifying the cost it took to buy the franchise.
        >Disney assumes that the 18-30 male demographic is a lock
They were thinking that when making the sequels, they'd have to be very moronic to keep thinking it.

          >not justifying the cost it took to buy the franchise.

Disney broke even on their purchase from toy sales alone within 2 years of buying Lucasfilm. But for me the most baffling thing is that they didn't write the entire trilogy from start to finish before they started filming VII.

every Star Wars movie besides Solo released in theaters has been a success. Even Rise of Skywalker, which people said "flopped", still had a net profit of $300-350 million.

I'm not even some white knight for Disney, I hate the vast majority of their Star Wars content they've released, I just like 7 and 8

but yeah, no surprise you're some deranged rightoid who just wants everything Disney done to be a failure because you're mad about trannies or something lmao

I think trying to release a $200 million blockbuster every year (or multiple times a year in marvel's case) just isn't sustainable. Do you think if George kept releasing a Star Wars movie every year after episode 3 they wouldn't have flopped? I know we live in a fantasyland now where people pretend the prequels were universally beloved and not controversial, but even in ideal circumstances I just don't think you can get people to care that much long-term.

Star Wars movies were so successful because they were a once in a generation event. When you dilute the brand that much through oversaturation people eventually tune out

the problem that we're running into as a society is that capitalism is built on endless, exponential growth in a world with finite resources. All this bullshit about NFTs and crypto is trying to just invent value doesn't actually exist lmao

similarly, movie studio executives just assumed people would show up for these bloated franchise pictures forever, and the bubble was destined to burst at some point. I know rightoids think the collapse of capeshit is about women and Black folk, I just think that the endless serialization of Marvel and everything being a shared universe now has the same appeal it did in 2012.

This. The problem is that Disney is just too good at making movies. Oops! The fans are simply not prepared or capable of handling all of the content Disney is capable of creating. It's very easy to assume that Disney is just putting out subpar content, but this would be a mistake. It's not very intuitive, but Disney actually produces extremely good content. The consumer is the flaw.

They never intended to use the GoT guys, they just baited them into thinking they could have Star Wars be theirs

It made them rush GoT to completion so they could get out of it and get to Star Wars which was Disney's plan so they could have no rival. And it worked...and suddenly oh there's no Star Wars project for them...they got played so fricking hard. They deserve it for what they did to GoT and how selfish and spoiled they were about it. They outright COMPLAINED that they had done it for 10 years and it wasn't fair they were stuck with it and they wanted to be done with it and move on. How fricking ungrateful can you be? They didn't even do shit. They just followed Martin's stuff and edited it...for the worse.

the D&D trilogy was a planned failure. They just wanted them to rush to finish GoT in time for Disney+'s launch. HBO is a direct competitor for them, so poaching them was the best option.

Disney ruined the end of GoT. D&D rushed the ending and ruined their reputations. Everyone else was on board for slowing the story down and going for 10 seasons.

Now the "true fans" are patiently waiting for things to get fixed or rebooted.

Also basically Filoni with his bullshit is an attempt to soft-reset it and it all started with the Mandalorian.
They even managed to frick that up almost immediately by saddling that show with as many cameos as they could then branched it off into three different shows then Filoni additionally injected his own horseshit characters into it with their own shit subplots etc.

Rise of Skywalker just seems aggressively bad so I never even saw it. From what I've gathered the whole movie is a mcguffin hunt complete with a dagger blade perfectly matching the rock formation on an ocean planet after thousands of years or some shit. And then there are thousands of Palpatines and thousands of Star Destroyers that no one built? It sounds like a fever dream now that I type it out. No thanks.

Rise of Skywalker isn't just aggressively bad, it's aggressively non-controversial. By trying to backpedal and undo the damage done by Rian Johnson, while also trying to avoid pissing off the people who liked TLJ, it ends up appealing to no one. So it's just bland and fast. The scenes are so quickly paced that you don't have time to stop and think about the plot being moronic, because there's a new flashy spectacle on the screen before you can even start to process the previous scenes. It's a garbled mess from start to finish with 5 or 6, maybe even 7(I lost count) fakeout deaths of major characters.

I don't think they have many older fans.
I grew up in the 80's. Star Wars was basically my childhood. RotJ is the first movie I remember seeing in the theater (Jabba scared the heck out of me.) I remember reading the Timothy Zahn books when they first came out. Tie Fighter was the first game I bought when I got a computer. I still have my ticket stub from The Phantom Menace. KotOR was one of the first games I bought for my second computer. Started getting out of it when the Clone Wars cartoon came out, but was looking forward to the new Disney films. TFA was okay. I figured my disappointed was because I was getting old. TLJ was the end of it.
None of my old GenX friends cares about Star Wars anymore, and we are the ones with a ton of disposable income. Disney really screwed the golden goose.

No one gave a single shit about the Ashoka series until that 1 Anakin episode which sent people crying, clapping and shitting themselves over it. You only need to look at the horrible react videos on YT to realise the unfortunate reality that Star Wars is, and forever will be, creatively bankrupt and relies entirely on the OG trilogy. they have already technically lost aspects of the copyright of SW, they probably HAVE to make something new to keep the IP.

          >they have already technically lost aspects of the copyright of SW
The frick are you talking about, that's not how this works. They have the full copyright for the original production for at least 9 more years, full stop, and will always have it full stop. They could sit on their asses for 8 years and not release the movie until december 31 of that 8th year, and it still would be theirs right up till that clock strikes 12.

          This isn't Spider-man.

Does anyone except literal brainwashed homosexuals get excited for this stuff anymore? Star Wars and Marvel are not entertainment properties anymore, they’re just vehicles for woke propaganda

      Anonymous

It is certainly hard to imagine anyone being truly excited for a new Star Wars movie. People were willing to be unabashed Star Wars fans before and after Force Awakens, but the entire fandom has died by now. Like, no one on Earth is still wearing porgie slippers as a show of fandom. If they own them they probably look at them with embarrassment.

      Anonymous

The propaganda theory holds weight. I know a couple nerd girls and literally none of them give a shit about Rey and Star Wars. The failure of the Marvels proved women simply don’t care about this shit.

        Anonymous

But that makes no sense. I'm willing to believe some higher ups at Disney would choose ideology over money, but all the shareholders? No fricking way. A business just cannot intentionally throw away money forever. The actual owners of the company will pull out.

          Anonymous

The shareholders have been b***hing, and if you take a look at Disney's stock, it has taken a huge beating.
I think Iger knows the party is over. He will sell Disney to Apple, but Apple is going to wait another year because they know the stock is going to continue to drop. Why would the buy it now when they can get it a quarter to a third cheaper in a year?
That's also why I don't think this movie will ever be made. Apple isn't going to want to deal with Star Wars: Batgirl when they take over.

Conspiracy theory/movie idea. Aliens visit Earth and tell some human leaders they need to achieve a bunch of stuff on a checklist to get welcomed into the intergalactic community, but you can't tell the rest of the world what you're doing or why you're doing it. That's why all of this weird arbitrary shit is going on. It's a stoner comedy of sorts where the people in power try to come up with ideas to get the rest of the human civilization to do a bunch of goofy rituals so the species can be given a bunch of game changing technologies. The list is all sorts of goofy random shit like "have 2 passionately men kiss each other on the lips on TV on New Years" and "have a man in a dress give a speech on the white house lawn."

if they did this in a very cynical and sarcastic-comedic tone, and had her "win" and genocide a heap of her enemies in sneaky ways, that'd actually be a fun way to shake up the franchise. Even thought they'd ruin any chance for future movies.

in reality, the much lower projected revenue of these films will result in another series of bloated messes, only without the correct amount of cgi-slop poured onto it, so it will be both bad AND ugly films.
