Nah, Hyde-Pierce was a Rowan Atkinson-tier physical comedy actor.

You're not entirely wrong, this was normie comedy in the 90s.
But given how TV was made back then (many episodes, less serialized) it meant there were occasionally some real bangers, this is where the typical anon conception of these shows having "soul" comes from. Also much less political correctness and enforced diversity bullshit.

Yep pretty much came to say this.
The lack of a constant story, more of a long term progression, similar to say, I dunno, Star Trek with its villain of the other week while there was some long-term story in the background building towards an eventual goal for the season.
Even Big Bang Theory has some funny bits in it, at least early on, but they went full normalgay humor and dropped any geeky shit, besides the random mention of [hot well known science topic].
The latter example is what the new Frasier series will be like - and it is going to be as painful as when TBBT went down the shitter too. TBBT could have been great if not for that.

I sometimes consider how the cast could've been downgraded to produce a standard sitcom, like if Phil Hartman played Frasier is an over-the-top SNL kind of way, and David Spade played Niles or something.

Is Kelsey Grammer the only person in Hollywood history to just exist in the industry without ever really being 'handsome' till he entered his 40's? It seems like such an odd niche, both professionally and personally. How many people age like wine from 40-70?

      Anonymous

do you think any of the men from cheers were handsome?

        Anonymous

well maybe Sam and Cliff, just as 'characters', I can't judge handsomeness necessarily as I was more partial to Kirstie Alley and the blonde. Woody was well cast but seemed like a shady character. It's just Frasier who has that 'third wish' dynamic where it's like he becomes a presence but only after he becomes bald and 40-something -- it's like 'damn, should've been more specific'...

        Anonymous

Sam was handsome, I mean that was his whole deal. Woody was cute and twink-ish but that had more to do with his character rather than his physical appearance. Now that I think about it, it's funny that most male characters from Cheers/Frasier ended up being bald, the exceptions being Norm, Cliff, Coach and Martyn.

This is actually the midwit take. There wasn't a single true high brow reference in the show. Its just a comfy 90's sitcom.

        Anonymous

Not really. The highbrow references are almost always irrelevant. Occasionally they make a scene title card funnier or give an extra layer to a punchline but they're never essential which is why it appealed to so many people. It's just a good show.

midwit responses no shit there weren't any actual highbrow references

it's all just for normal to dumb people to BELIEVE they are bright, it's just another dumbass sitcom

You are projecting you uncontrollable fixation on your own inferiority onto others. Functional people watch shows they enjoy, not just shows they think smart people enjoy.

The whole point of the show is that Frasier and Niles ARE that person who puts on airs and acts like a pompous ass but can't navigate basic situations. They're tryhard chuddies whose main motivation in most episodes is just chasing pussy or getting comically in-over-their-heads because they aren't as clever as they pretend to be.

No, c**t, it was a kind show that poked fun at highbrow pretentions with the audience, without denying that those aspirations were comfy.

"Stupid" or less well-read people that like the show might be inclined to look up any of the many references to deeper material like Shakespeare, just to understand what the characters are talking about or even referencing. Or all the little hints about psychology stuff that make one think and reflect about things and above all oneself.
Besides all that and more it's simply just the definition of "comfy". Kelsey Grammer alone is a delight to watch act, Hyde-Pierce as well. A lot of the writing is great.
It's a nice thing they made up, at worst it's perfect background noise.

90% of the show itself was mocking pretentious, pseudo-intellectual buttholes like Frasier, Niles, and the people they would want to associate with. This is why characters like Daphne and Marty exist to foil them, they give perspective on how Frasier/Niles' taste and the degree to which they're "cultured" doesn't matter to people with ordinary sensibilities that are secure within themselves. It also strongly implies that the only reason the brothers are so into high-concept things is because they're ashamed of their blue-collar father, because they think hard work is for stupid people. If you seriously think that the show was anything other than a fun sitcom using self-absorbed snobs as a plot device for flavor-of the week episodes, you didn't watch the show and don't understand it.

eh, while Frasier is occasionally the butt of the joke as often he's playing the straight man to a parade of boorish and unreasonable people, some crass, some even more snobbish than he is. the show does ultimately want you to like and empathize with Frasier.

        >the show does ultimately want you to like and empathize with Frasier.
Yes, despite his flaws, not because of them, because he’s ultimately a decent human being who wants to help people and has a lot of integrity.
