I don't think anyone is unironically expecting it to flop but marvel fatigue is real.

It’s less Marvel fatigue and more that the MCU just feels really unfocused lately. After defeating Thanos and most of the original crew disbanding... there’s definitely a bit of a “now what?” feeling settling in - not helped at all by the tots lack of overall direction so far this phase.

        Anonymous

The lack of focus was intentional. I think it was a bad choice. They wanted to move into a more episodic movie format where other heroes would guest star and the Multiverse was supposed to be the draw. But thing that made Marvel unique was the serialized structure- centering around the Infinity Stones and the mysteries surrounding them.

Then they dropped the hook of mystery and scooped up flavor of the week/stunt casting/nostalgia. Even worse they shelved the most popular characters and replaced them with people who cannot carry their own movies. Nobody cares about the women heroes. It is absolutely true, no one cares. Boseman died. Thor is now too goddamn wacky. Strange is a weak lead. There is no character that is the heart or moral center like Captain America. The whole post IW is a wash. Feige either needs to go back to what worked with F4 and X-Men (likely 5-6 years away). Or just let it die. Hopefully the latter since Disney openly said they are agenda-driven now and do not care about quality.

This is actually a common thing in the comics after a huge blowout crossover event.

Stories start working towards a big world changing event, and after it happens, there's a shake-up that needs to be resolved. Sometimes that is the new thing becoming the status quo, meanwhile every other aspect of a character's backstory tends to go "back to basics". It works towards creating a lull or palate cleanser until the next event. It's also a way of retaining the core elements that people like about the characters while slowly scaling the stakes back down, as the characters navigate their new status quo.

You're just not used to movies doing this, because the only long form narratives that Hollywood seems to end up doing is continuing to do BIGGER BETTER FASTER - aka spectacle creep - until no one gives a shit. And that last bit is the part that you're anticipating will happen here, deservedly so since Hollywood usually doesn't learn its lessons. The best idea Hollywood came up to combat narrative blowout or spectacle creep is "rebooting", and that is such a midwit idea that comics already figured out how to it do with the first 25 years of the medium.

Honestly I hope what the MCU is doing here pays off, because like, fricking JaRule and Tyrese Gibbons just went to fricking space in a car. Are they gonna go punch God next? It's fricking ridiculous. I can't take it.

I really fricking hope that some of what comics learned to do right with regards to serialized storytelling can be imparted into the movie medium. Because considering it's the only genre propping up the movie industry right now, the Hollywood morons need the help.

              >fricking JaRule and Tyrese Gibbons just went to fricking space in a car.

The Fast and The Furious is the funniest example of spectacle creep. The first movie was about a bunch of cholo gearheads stealing VCRs.

I think the idea of what they are doing is fine, but the movies just don't seem to stand well on their own anymore.

A lot of the de-emphasizing of old heroes is Marvel shitting bricks because their copyrights are all due to expire. Too bad the only thing they have to take their place is woke abominations that are going to crash and burn.

The new movies are so episodic, you could watch the newer ones without seeing any of the others. In fact, not watching them would actually help. Multiverse of Madness is fricking incomprehensible garbage if you've seen previous movies with the same characters.

          Power Scaler

          Based post, based responses

I will also add the removal of power scaling. Avengers 1 did many things right, one of them was to have every single battle provide clear power hierarchy between the heroes. Avengers 2, as well.

          Nowadays?
Capt. Marvel is never seen absorbing energy, she is at 100% all the time (another reason why she is anappealling).

Scarlet Witch, was always a mess in the comics, and is part of her character to have nebulous powers, but if yoy put her with Dr.Strange, then the plot is robbed of any sense of power scaling, hence tension. And the MCU always had a stakes issue.

Dr. Strange started ok for a magic user, but now he performs all kinds of weird stuff with no drawbacks, or recurrence. I would prefer him being weird and obscure in other heroe's movies, but at least give some set up for his tricks in his own movies. (What were those floating giant hands?)

Random multiverse bullshit, random heroes with random powers solving random plots. All with a heavy dose of the *MESSAGE*.

Don't forget the spectre of bREE. The core audience is convinced that Marvel is going full wokeshit, which they probably are. Which means it actually worse than nothing is being promised, it's actually them promising something the audience really does not want.

It's not even fatigue, it's bREE told the billion dollar audience that Marvel is now for women and minorities, the billion dollars was neither, so they dropped it. And of course they did, vidya companies, the entire country of Japan, youtube wankers with patreons, there will never ever be a shortage of people lined up for those incelbux. You tell em to leave because it's not for them, they do.

There is no Avengers movie to tie all the characters together again.
The Avengers movies (and Cap 3) were used to help connect the movies and make it feel like a universe.

Now there are so many solo movies and shows of characters doing their own thing that it feels disconnected.

This is on point. As loose and sloppy as it was, as many unanswered(and frankly unconsidered) questions as the Infinity War arc had, people had the sense of a longer overarching story being told. That's absent now.

Them doing the Multiverse and supposedly building up to Secret Wars when they're still introducing characters was such a huge frick up, how are people supposed to care about the regular universe and characters when you just introduced the idea that Tobey Maguire can come back, which means any old actor/character can also come back, people will just look forward to that, why would they give a shit about Shang Chi 2 or Ms Marvel?
And then Sony also wants to do their own multiverse bullshit, meaning that Spider-man will be in those movies too, it's all a fricking mess and people will just get sick of it

The first phases were pretty straight forward, you can tell how it all connects, now it's all over the place, they're at DC level of incompetence, seems like Feige just stopped giving a shit or wasn't that smart to begin with

It'll earn around the same as Ragnarok, perhaps less. I think people will find it underwhelming. A lot of people were mixed on Taika and feel the story ended with Endgame.

The whole plot already leaked, there's nothing in there about Valkyrie being bi or lesbian or whatever. Apparently they sideline Valkyrie to make room for Jane. That's the thing about these queerbaiting MCU films, they can just give the barest hints of LGBT content and the fans will act like it's revelatory.

            >At the beginning of the film the Guardians are jokingly trying to get rid of Thor.
            >Jane Foster has cancer, and Darcy Lewis is there in a small role. So is Erik Selvig, but he attends on a computer screen. They are trying to find a cure for her.
            >She goes to New Asgard, and the hammer Mjölnir “senses” her and gives her Thors power. The power makes her cancer worse, but Jane knows she’s dying anyways.
            >Gorr has a family that died, and blames the gods. His story is tied to a god named Eternity, which we are told looked incredibly comic accurate. Gorr finds a sword that can kill gods and give him extra powers, and starts to do so.
            >Thor, Korg, Valkyrie, and Jane go to a god city, and see Zeus. Zeus is evil and tries to kill them. Thor injuries (but doesn’t kill) Zeus. At some point in this sequence, there’s a huge crowd of gods from around the universe, including a Kronan god (Korg's god), and most memorably a god with only a head and legs.

This is even worse than I thought. I imagined the movie would be centered around Hershlag learning to be a superhero or around Thor coming to terms with him being the King of Asgard and to quit playing around with mortals. I was even ready for Hershlag, or someone else, to replace him permanently. But instead literally nothing happens. This movie is pointless, even Ragnarok had character development for Thor and changes to the overarching story. I don't think Gorr kills a single God based on the leaks.

Thor gets a kid sidekick at the end, that seems to be the only real development in the story. Weird that it's "Gorr's Daughter" though, like not even an Asgardian or someone with a Thor related theme.

So more female superheroes to piggyback off established heroes. Female Loki, female Hawkeye, female Hulk, female Thor, and now you have another new female character who will tag along with Thor.
No wonder this phase is bombing. Is there any new hero that's going to be able to carry the MCU?

                >Is there any new hero that's going to be able to carry the MCU?
No. And worse they're trying to shift it all onto the shoulders of Pratt and Hemsworth. I like both of them, but they are not even close to up to that task. Benjamin Cumberdick has underperformed, Evans and RDJ are gone, bREE is obviously a non-starter, and they keep bringing in new WAPOC despite the fact that there are simply nowhere near enough handsome white chads for them to play off.

At this point their best option might be to just go straight to the Harem fantasy.

        Batman should've made a billion, it didn't
        Doctor Strange 2 should've made a billion, it didn't
The Disney Plus shows should have viewership as big as Netflix's most popular shows, they don't
Nobody cared about Shang Chi or Eternals, which were new characters with movies
Only recent successful capeshit movie was Spider-man, the most popular superhero of all time, in a movie where Tobey Maguire comes back and they constantly reference the OG movies for more nostalgia points

Capeshit is dying, Marvel is dying, DC is already dead. It's over

Lightyear bombed my man. Thor 4 won't bomb, but it will perform around the same or less than Ragnarok.

Thor 4, Black Panther 2 and Guardians 3 are the only films they have less that have a chance at $1bn.

Ant-Man 3, The Marvels, Fantastic Four and Blade will all under perform or flop

Nobody is paying for that. You might get a few fricking wanker who think they're buying an N-word pass, but if that makes $400mil I'll be gobsmacked.

Fantastic Four and Blade to have pre-existing fanbases, but that's actually a problem because they're going to have expectations and those expectations will not be met. Imagine trying to "update" Fantastic Four while still staying true to the source, it's not possible. It will be a shitstorm Normies won't want a part of, Comic Book Guy will boycott, anime will become mainstream, Marvel dies.

Black Panther 2 will do the same thing the first did, where black people are brought tickets by celebs and others out of guilt. I would not be surprised if the movie has a memorial scene for T'Challa and they propaganda him into another George Floyd for black people to flock around.

It won't do as well as the previous film, but it's the only MCU movie this year that has a chance at $1bn.

Fantastic Four has gotten repeatedly fricked up and now they do a fancast and kill off the character making him look like a moron in the process. If they cast anyone different it'll piss people off, if they deviate from the comics it'll piss people off and they likely want the Fantastic Four to be more diverse because you won't have an all white team. Jon Watts ditched the project understanding it was going to suck.

Blade is just going to be uninteresting, it's got an eternals character in it for some reason.

Don't act like this is a black thing. Every big movie has people doing weird shit at the theatre. Tron 2 and Avatar had people in cosplay. Batman had a shooter and civilians were complaining that they can't now carry guns to the movies to save people in case it happens again.

            >Black Panther 2 will do the same thing the first did, where black people are brought tickets by celebs and others out of guilt.
That doesn't work twice. Those people have bought their n-word pass, they don't need another one.

            > if they deviate from the comics it'll piss people off
The trouble there is that the comics are rooted in the 1950s idea of the nuclear family, which just does not translate today. It just doesn't. You can't have Sue Storm as the dutiful wife playing the support role to Daddy Fantastic Reed Richards. Her critical job outside of combat is cooking while Reed does literally all of the important things and Johnny causes trouble. That's not just an archaic view of women, that's alien view of women to most millenials, never mind zoomers. Even in 2004 it was clearly a problem, but they erred on the side of conservatism and BARELY made it work.

The audience is going to be WAY more demanding this time after the tragedy that was Fan4stic. There is simply no way to please them. And you can find a few oldgays on Cinemaphile you'll all know they're all ready to blow when it's not up to their completely unreasonable expectations.

So plan B - Full woke. That convinces the whole audience their expectations were right and now everyone explodes.

Plan C - some compromise. Well now nobody is happy. Not only does Cinemaphile go ballistic but so does twitter.

It's a no win situation. It will not just fail as a movie, it will drag the whole MCU under with it.

Kevin homosexual. In the comics, when Jane becomes "Thor" her body and voice completely change. They could have cast a stunt actress and kept the helmet on all the time, and then dub Hershlag's voice on top. Easy solution. But nah, homosexual decided to use CGI on her arms and call it a day.
