And if certain people really don't want white people to be the leading character you can always use funny animals which is what use to be the case years ago.

The art style is bad. I feel like I've already seen this movie and know everything that will happen in it so there's no point watching it. If it had a more unique visual style I might not have that feeling.

          Imagine being Disney
          >spend 93405782382957438 dollars on new tech to make your low-effort 3D look like "Classic Disney"
          >the effect is so subtle that it only shows up if you're watching the movie in 4K on a well-calibrated screen
          >the effect is simply GONE if you watch the movie on anything less, leaving behind a 3D movie that looks unfinished
          >most normalgays are going to watch the movie on their phones and uncalibrated smart TVs with all the wrong settings, probably upscaled 1080P
          Also:
          >intend for the movie to be set in Spain
          >actual Spaniards themselves are pissed because half the characters don't even look Spanish at all, mostly just look like they're half-black
          >Disney backs out and makes it a generic who-knows-where fantasy land so they can keep the diverse races as-is
          >loses any appeal towards Spain like they were planning
          >now the movie doesn't even have the free advertising from people wanting to see their homeland/culture like what happened with Encanto or whatever it's called
          >loses some of the journalist "wow, thanks for representing my 1/32 Spanish heritage Disney, I literally cried" appeal too
          Also:
          >had the star as some Tumblr twinkbait that would've gotten literal millions of horny 20-somethings to watch the movie so they'd come up with weird fanart and whatever
          >Disney then changes the star into a generic Luma for some reason, probably to make marketable plushies or something, I don't even know
          >the star's new design also means there's no fun animation quirks either

If this was indeed their goal, then they've failed miserably at it. I can watch Cinderella on a 50 year old standard definition tv and still see the linework, so this doesn't make sense. There are video games that pull off the 2D look in real time. This very studio released a short called Paperman 11 years ago.
Is this one of those situations in tech where the the guy getting laid off takes all of his code fixes with him so that all the software breaks, and refuses his severance to avoid training the person replacing him? It sure feels like the animators at Disney, at least the ones in decision-making positions, don't know what they're doing. The brain drain is real.

It would also have given the movie the emotional core and focus it so direly lacks. You have to be an extremely good writer to sell the audience a story without a cental relationship (romantic or otherwise), and the Wish creators are not that.

Diversity isn't the problem. Forced diversity is. Every friend group now needs a token black kid, a token indian kid, a token asian kid, a token fat kid, and a token girl. Soon there'll be a token troony too.
The ironic thing is even to this day friend groups in schools, whether they be elementary, high, or college, rarely ever look like the forced diversity groups these suits try to force into fiction.

        >The ironic thing is even to this day friend groups in schools, whether they be elementary, high, or college, rarely ever look like the forced diversity groups these suits try to force into fiction.
This is fairly true, but the friend group consisting of diverse tokens has been a thing for ages, long before Disney movies started sucking. I can't see how its the problem when it wasn't a problem in the past when they did the same thing. I think the actual problem is the diversity is just a crutch to prop up something that's lacking in substance on its own. There is very little in wish to draw potential audience in, all the characters seem bland, the story isn't interesting or original, none of the music is that good, and since the only remarkable aspect of the movie is that it has diversity that's what certain people hyperfocus on.

        Anonymous

I don't think it's a problem to portray "diverse" friend groups especially in children's media so they have good references that people from all backgrounds and lifepaths are ultimately all human etc
The problem is when you create a character who's only trait is being a minority. That does suck ass and feels infuriating.

You can't have a black character that is either poor, dumb, or violent. You can't take Homer Simpson and make him black without being called racist.

            Anonymous

Well but that's part if the problem, really. It's the same reason you can't get truly evil or dumb female characters. Even though it's actually pretty sexist/xenophobic to hold women/poc to high expectations of performance, because in a way you dehumanise them, you dont allow them to be seen a fully human rounded characters with flaws. All because they are afraid of being called bigots if they do it badly lmao. These producers and directors are spineless and they are not good enough writers to pull off well written dumb or evil characters so that they don't seem like a charicature of sexist or racist stereotypes.
Feminists and other "woke" people have been complaining about this since forever. I personally have been saying I want to see a dumbass fricking woman on TV, not adorkable, not quirky, not clumsy. I want female characters to be allowed to be stupid. I want Mabel Pines!!!

Its not so much "diversity and politics" when its more about being toothless and stagnant with their content. I also find tough to believe that diversity begets blandness as a whole. • 5 months ago

Just because you're racist and dislike diversity does not mean that general audiences agree with you. "Woke" movies this year like Barbie made billions, perhaps the movies Disney is putting out are just written poorly with boring concepts.

I won't lie, this entire discourse about awakening cinema has made me... Intrigued regarding the notion that we have been denied good female characters all this time. But if Barbie is their idea of a fully realized female character than I am thoroughly unimpressed. Hopefully it is as you say, that the writing just hasn't been up to par yet, and we're in a weird transitory period or something.

          Anonymous

Imo Barbie is a good character for what the movie is: a comedy. She is a good lead because she does what the genre requires. The shit writing comes in when people think that a well written woman = "strong and independent" or whatever the frick. Arcane is typically praised as having a really well written female cast, and it's not because they are all super strong and never wrong and always independent or anything. They make bad decisions, they have to deal with the consequences of their actions, some are weak and some are strong, etc. They are well written because they have complexity and flaws, which makes them realistic and human for what the genre demands (which is not comedy at all). Also they are not sidelined.
So those are examples of well written women, even though they are all very different. it's not about writing a cool, independent blah blah woman like marvel does, its about writing characters with humanity.

Barbie is a movie about two blonde, aryan looking white characters that are straight. I wouldn't use that as a good example of a "woke" movie nor is that a win. The side cast just exists to pump those two up and is the baggage that weighs the movie down. The plastic feminism message is just capitalistic. It's neither a win for the left or right, when you think of it.

          Anonymous

It was a terrible fricking movie so it is a win in that sense. Maybe if it had awoken something it wouldn't have been so bad.

I have a hard time even thinking of Barbie as a feminist movie, because one of the main themes is in contrasting the reality of the world with the fantasy world of Barbie. People seem to forget that Ken is a doll in a toyline made for girls, so he doesn't and shouldn't matter.
Barbieland has doctors, but no one gets injured. Barbieland has a president, but no elections. To become a real woman, Barbie had to leave all of that behind. Did this fly over everyone's heads?

The thing about woke content is that what qualifies as woke or not is pretty arbitrary. I've seen people argue that Beauty & the Beast is a metaphor for interracial couples. They use it as a way to mentally disown media while shaming others for consuming it.

    >DEI has pushed more people away than it brought in
Disney needs to try something bold and good, without feeling DEI to win back the audience and start a new era for themselves. I think a 2D movie could do that, or if they can pull a classic Pixar movie out of their ass (Brad Bird?) they need to stop with the live action remake slop it is destroying their brand. I have no loyalty to the company but I do want to see good movies, that would be my advice

      >Brad Bird?

He left Dinsey to work at Skydance and is currently working on a film there

It's simple, start doing Mickey Mouse content again and drop the Marvel and Star Wars shit.
Thats it, no LGBTQ+ garbage, no POC, NO HUMANS!, just straight cis-gendered funny animals doing funny things.

Because it feels like the kids movie that's taking place in a real movie. Like I can imagine this in advertisements and movie screens for a chase movie between a disgruntled cop and an ex mafia hitman.

Too lazy to check, but I assume the "here's why" consists of at least half of:
    >meaningless shit that's probably barely related
    >whining about the right wing again
    >something about how pushing boundaries is something that takes time to build and flourish
    >at least one link to somewhere you can buy tickets
    >blaming various -isms and -ists
    >blaming Twitter, or Musk specifically, for not being as hospitable to ESG/DEI companies and their advertising
    >an off-handed comment about COVID lockdowns and how people are "super afraid to go out these days"
    >coping by stating the numbers will be WAY higher on Disney+ (which they then drop an affiliate link for)

    Or...:
    >it's one of those really annoying SEO-bait pieces you see all over the internet
    >like fifty random questions people might ask, listed in a row
    >most of the questions are awful, or there is no answer yet so the "answer" is just a drawn-out, wordy "no"
    >every question is answered vaguely and is worded weirdly, often literal reposts / quotes from other sites, or just outright wrong (they might also be AI nowadays)

Not true. Jasmine and Mulan were extremely popular and common princess favourites for girls when I was a child. Girls want girl characters who look good, are interesting, and perform in a good movie.

Jasmine was only popular because she was Disney Renaissance, not because white girls accept brown girls. She’s also not the lead of her movie. Mulan was not popular anymore than Pocahontas was popular among white women.

Jasmine and Mulan were both popular and loved by little girls. I'm sorry that reality doesn't reflect what you personally want reality to be, but the fact is that little white girls like princesses who arent white as long as they look nice and have a place in a good movie. End of.

I am white and know what I grew up around, so frick off. I am not saying a white girl never bought a Mulan or Jasmine toy, but they are secondary to characters like Aurora, Belle, and Cinderella and always have been. I have statistics to prove it too and it's not hard to find. Jasmine is exotic, Mulan had pretty music and is exotic too. They were not popular among white women like you're pretending they are but more like passing fancies. They still don't stack up in sales compared to white princesses. Don't even get me started on Tiana.

I am white too and that doesn't match my experiences at all lmao. Jasmine was one of the most popular princesses because she was pretty and had cool clothing (her clothes were close to what was fashionable in the early 2000s). Girls at my school fought over who got to be her when playing pretend, they dressed up as her for playing/dress up parties, they played with her toys, etc.

The art style is bad. I feel like I've already seen this movie and know everything that will happen in it so there's no point watching it. If it had a more unique visual style I might not have that feeling.

Barbie has a god-tier marketing campaign, geared itself towards female audiences perfectly, an adaption of a large IP that never got one and stared two straight whites

The movie addressed topics of feminism explicitly and directly and also the supporting cast was filled to the brim with non-white actors, LGBT actors, and it portrayed a very non-conventional masculinity. By Cinemaphile standards it was mega woke, and yet it did really well and people loved it. Because it was a genuinely fun movie.
Pretending movies do well because they have white and heterosexual characters is the same as when annoying people cry that their shit movie does badly because "people are racist and don't want to see it because it has a lead of color wah wah"
No b***h. People are not watching your movie because it sucks.
It's the same the other way around. People watch movies when they are good. End of.

I hate to tell you this, but people just wanted to see the stupid Barbie movie because it was bubblegum and nostalgic. That's it. It marketed itself as a comedy. People put up with the contents to see Barbie and Ken on the big screen.

You really are overthinking things if you thought of that as win. At the end of the day, it's true two straight blonde whites on the screen is what people were there for, not the diversity hire casting, shitty Nicki Minaj and Iced Spice rap song, and that god awful troon character. If all that were removed, it would've done way better. End of.

Nostalgia can't make a full movie. We see that every time with these sequels and love action remakes: they do bad because they are bad and soulless. Barbie did well because beyond the nostalgia appeal it also was a fun movie. People had fun with it. It's very simple: good movies do well, and bad movies do badly.

Oh I definitely have my complaints about the movie, I don't think it's that great for a variety of reasons. But yeah, my point is only that it is for the most part a simple fun movie that looks great and has fun music, and that's it. And that's why it was successful, not because of some weird conspiracy theory about how white or woke a movie has to be to do well, yknow.
