It's intentional, Nolan believes Hawai'i was always the logical extension of Manifest Destiny.

Counting the stars in the flag to see if they're anachronistic or not is pretty intense autism.

You don't have to count them, you can look at the pattern of the stars' layout.

You don't have to count them moron you can tell by the alignment of the stars

Alignment of the stars changes with just one star added. With two it is a very noticeable pattern difference.

Not at all. If you're into cinema, you watch the movie like 10 times and easily figure this shit out.
A movie has several levels and in general, the more levels the better the movie.

Kubrick would have made sure they used the right flag. Even Tarantino or Ridley Scott would have had enough autistic attention to detail.
Why is Nolan still held in high regard? He hasn't made a good flick since inception.

So we’re putting Nolan up there with Kubrick now are we? Tarantino is a more apt comparison, and his movies are filled to the brim with anachronistic mistakes like this.

Nolan isn't an American. These kinds of details are easy to miss if you're not familiar with stuff like when Hawaii became a state.

Nolan grew up in America. He was born in the UK and returned as an adult.

Inception wasn't even that good, he ripped the concept and entire sequences from an anime wholesale and turned it into an average heist movie.

Autist here. You not need to count all the stars. The 50 star flasg has a recognizable pattern (6 stars in row A + 5 stars in row B) which culminates to 50 stars at the 4th and a half cycle (44+ 6 = 50). The 48 star flag was just 8 rows of 6

There have been many different variants of the American flag with different star layouts and the one you see in the movie is only seen after the war ended.

They left the modern shipping cranes in the background of Dunkirk. Nolan is not known for attention to detail.

in hindsight i should have turned that movie off after seeing the modern concrete sitting benches in first shot of the beach
movie was trash, only good scenes where the sinking ship ones

oppenheimer also came across as lazy, so many opportunities for great sets to have all the conversation in and he didn't take a single one wtf

I don't think they give a shit. If you rewatch the Dark Night trilogy you can see a lot of signs inthe background indicating that they are in Chicago.

I think Dunkirk was his best recent movie because it had so much spectacle and the least plot and dialogue. He's basically an executive producer larping as a director.

This. It still amazes me people think he's doing some high-brow cinema.
I remember being 12 or something and some pretentious neighborhood kid said Memento is super hard to understand and complicated and I wouldn't get it. Turns out it was backwards... woah!

Nolan frequently makes mistakes like this, and it's not autistic to point it out. It's noticeable, and it's something that a truly great director would eradicate from his pictures.

I bet Nolan jerk offs his tiny little pencil dick in his private IMAX projector room, looking at the strips of florence pugh over and over again. His family thinking he is just in his zone, if they disturb he gets really Red headed and angry.
He is in his zone, yes. He looks at the saggy breasts of her, imagines himself instead of oppy in that scene. The soft skin, the flabby meat, he cant help it.
Nolan sweats and grunts as he busts a nut over his 70mm magnum opus, the best orgasim of his life.
He smears the cum over his hands, letting it dry for the Event in the evening, where he can touch pugh with his sticky hands.
She will think its just sweat but until the end of the night, she will be covered in his creative sperm, making the next fantasy only so much more delicious.

It's funny because this could be fixed in seconds by a talented vfx artist without anyone being able to tell it was vfx. But Nolan is too autistic to even humour the thought.

I noticed that in the trailer when they were celebrating with the flag in the background. at least nolan didn't go out of his way to remove it as much as possible like chazelle did

  19. 9 months ago
    Anonymous

It's a Nolan trademark. That's modern industrial machinery in the BG, wouldn't have been around back then. They could've just digitally removed them- Nolan isn't above that- but Nolan doesn't give a frick about detail because his movies are made to get ticket sales and not be art

      Teritory vs state

      Anonymous

Hawaii wasn't a state until 1959. Just like Puerto Rico isn't a state now even though it is de facto part of America. Statehood is an awkward thing in American politics since it's practically deciding elections since if you add a state you're giving extra votes since new states are obviously going to vote one way like the whole Washington DC situation now is just Democrats wanting to increase their overall votes. Hawaii was kept out of statehood for a whole because it would've obviously voted Republican back then and increased their hold over the executive branch and senate and it wasn't until Eisenhower that they were able to force it through
