The show was great. Started the books last night. It actually makes sense. The people in the cafeteria saw the real world, but as seen in the one episide they could change it. The people in suits saw the fake good world to make them clean.

      It was really bad.

Besides being atrociously miscast, none of the characters act in any way that's even remotely believable given their circumstances. They also act inconsistently and there are awkward pauses during conversations that seem less like a slow burn and more like padding out the runtime.

"Secret" murders/attempted murders literally just happen out in the open, everyone plays fast and loose with their jobs and responsibilities, and people use vaguely flowery sacrosanct terminology like "Relics" and "The Before Times" interspersed with modern vernacular and expressions. They also waste food and are full of thugs and dissenters, with everyone basically ignoring the chain of command to do their own thing - all under a system that's supposed to be heavily regimented and oppressively tyrannical.

This has probably the least immersive world-building I've ever seen in what's supposed to be a big budget production. This is just bad, especially compared to something like Severance which has similar themes but is far more convincing and engaging.

Also half the cast is killed off in the first half of the season before we even had a chance to get to know them so it's impossible to even care.

I don't know what more you could want out of a show. Plenty of action, a cool setting. Maybe you should watch Severance which is a boring mess of basically no consequences. People dying is good it advances the plot. Nothing worse than plot armor.

That's a pretty hasty generalization. I'm sure there are shows we both agree are good. Just because our opinions diverge it doesn't mean either one of us have bad taste. It just means we have different life experiences and react to things differently. Severance to me was very boring. I struggled to finish the season and I regret watching. Silo by episode 3 I was hooked and binged the rest of the episodes.

        >all under a system that's supposed to be heavily regimented and oppressively tyrannical
To some extent sure, but they make it painfully clear that the people in charge are barely holding on to power by a thread and still retain some level of basic morality. They talk about how they have been losing cameras on all levels. For the widiwife, instead of flat out killing her they put her in a drugged up dream land. Even though the protag wasn't supposed to be born they still let her live and grow up and even let her become sheriff. For her mother, despite her breaking the law, they just destroyed her stuff instead of killing her.

The point is it isnt just your generic, incredibly tyranical government. That they try to have some standards but are slowly becoming more corrupt as they lose resources and become more desperate. This is also a hint towards them having genuinely good intentions.

It sounds like you projected a lot of expections and ideas based on nothing really. You should stop doing that.

that doesn't make sense, they should immediately realize that what they or the people in the silo are seeing is altered, and all previous cleanings (they surely witnessed a couple, they're adults) made zero difference. IF you want to signal something is up it makes much more sense not to clean at all.

        > they should immediately realize that what they or the people in the silo are seeing is altered
Why should they? The technology to do that has been erased from peoples minds for who knows how long, the fact that a camera exists blows peoples mind in the show
        >and all previous cleanings (they surely witnessed a couple, they're adults)
They are extremely rare, the show stresses this

          >Why should they?
because they've spent their entire life looking at at a screen looking like a wasteland, EVEN AFTER CLEANINGS, and then see something completely different. Not to mention people usually want to get out because they already distrust what they're told.
Cleaning could not possibly communicate anything to those inside the silo and the characters could not possibly think otherwise.
          >They are extremely rare, the show stresses this
How rare? At the very beginning didn't the mayor said that going a couple years without any cleaning is pretty good? Granted there aren't many bodies outside.

you know, i get that thats the supposed reason. but if you "discover" that the outside is green this is NOT a reason for you to clean, it does not make any sense. anyone who cleans lived inside, they know how the outside view from the inside looks, cleaning will not fricking change that. only a roomtemperature iq monkey would come to the conclusion that cleaning will show the grenn vista to the people inside.

      >THE TWIST WAS LITERALLY THAT THE BIG BAD AUTHORITARIAN GOVERNMENT WAS RIGHT AND THE SUBVERSIVE, FREE-THINKING INDIVIDUALS WERE WRONG
      the surveillance state was justified
the suppression of relics was justified

there is literally no reason for secrecy, the population could simply be told outside equals death and all relics could be legal.

the biggest and most stupidly illogical jebait was the outside being an illusion even for those wearing the helmet. once you are outside there is no going back so it makes no sense to fool anyone as they die.

Take away morals: citizens are plebs who know nothing and should accept their highly surveiled and thought controlled existence because the government and intelligence agencies know what's best for them but you will only find that out when you die attempting to beat them. The heroes of the series are now a murderous spook and corrupt politician who would stop at nothing to protect their community.
It's like m knight shymalalamalan has a school for lazy bad endings and apple threw money at a few graduates.

Severance is almost perfect compared with Silo. Despite all the style and intrigue that Silo has it throws it all away by making all the characters and revelations a lie. That's not clever or subversive its just shit. It's like hey you thought batman was a hero well he was a paedophile the whole time! Gotcha! uh ok then well done writers you got me, I guess everything up till that reveal was you getting paid and us stupidly watching your now broken story so the joke is on us. I despair that another season of this train wreck could be written. It's like nobody learnt their lesson from lost. Episode 1: audience: they're dead and this is heaven. Writers: no it isn't. Seasons pass: the island is a special machine. Final episode: they're all dead. Bad writing is just bad and Silo had potential but shat on it for a conclusion with a shit aftertaste.

It's very simple; it's nice for the people who are about to die to see "heaven".
...aaand also it convinces them to clean the camera, so that other people can see it, not that they can.
Lastly, it's a "matrix zion" type of setup, where you know a certain percentage of the population are going to rebel, so you have another layer of control ready for them.
      Simple really.

If the camera becomes too dirty, reality will be obscured.

So extremely badly done. Inept to the level of incompetence in storytelling. Episode 2 ends with her hanging on some rope above a huge lake of water (the element she made clear she fears like no other) - her lamp drops in, oh no, cliffhanger!
Episode 3 starts and she... Just climbs up again. Then the rest of the episode forgets the mystery and is about fixing a big fan (spoiler: it first looks like it won't work, but then it does). In the same episode there's a scene where a guy is out after curfew. Police catch him, say go home! He say OK, and goes home. This was a scene someone wrote and then an entire film crew shot with actors. Mindboggling.

To add to this. That's why they made a big deal about detective what's his name taking his mask off. Just watch, they'll notice that his body is missing sometime and then he'll come back explaining how the poison was just enough to knock him unconscious

For that gay mystery, this is the an occasion a book should have been a 2 hour movie and not a 10 hour tv series.

Is it just me or do all these apple shows have a weird “safe” feeling to them, like they have the perfect mix of races cooperatively living together but they’re not quite shoving it in your face like Disney would. And nobody ever acknowledges this in the programming, it’s all just normal to the characters.
