Goes a bit against the whole "finding out you've been in a coma for 100 years and piecing together your past" thing, don't it?

Yeah, that was supposed to be the scary and tragic part for Aang. He spends a couple days with Katara and Sokka telling him that the air nomads are extinct, but he just doesn’t believe them and fully thinks he’s gonna find his family in that temple, just maybe all 100 years older. And then he arrives and not even their descendants are left, his entire culture is gone.

Kinda takes the punch out if you let him have watched them die.

did i misread the tweet? it doesn't say aang witnesses it directly, but maybe they said so in an article?

What's the point showing it to the audience but having the main character be stuck in a mystery for a while?

depends when they show it, maybe we see aang finding gyatso and the flashes to the genocide.
for all we know it's a 1 minute scene the marketers prop up because they're desperate to get people to talk about the show.
i still think it's a lame idea as discussed in the thread, but so far there's no hint it's gonna be THAT bad. granted i wouldn't be surprised if it was, everything about this remake reeks of "we followed the show 1:1 to make our thing, but since we didn't understand it we made several moronic changes"

Avatar has been a dead series since the last episode airedand everyone asked why aang didn't just kill the firelord. Probably even before that. People only want to 'make it work' outo f nostalgia for 2005 or whenever this dumb shit aired and the fact every post-main series movie, show, comic book, game etc. has been a terrible flop. Imagine some 22yo nerd in 2005 and he's watching this because he's a fricking dork while in college jerking off to how comics and cartoons will finally defeat anime or whatever. Now imagine nearly 20 years have passed and he's 41 and he's determined to make this shit work now that he's working for netflix or whatever. That's the vibe from this dumb series. All the endless millennials trying to MAKE IT WORK for 20 years, refusing to throw in the towel.

      t. watched the series in 2005 as a kid.

It's a live action remake, of course it is. They had to shoe-horn in Garp and Coby to give exposition in LA One Piece because the only way midwit writers know how to drive a story is via exposition characters. They literally have no concept of show, don't tell.

      Anonymous

It COULD work if they hold off showing it until Aang finds Gyatso, he looks around room with standard-cinema flashes of dudes getting slammed against walls or shooting fire or whatever, ending with a full flashback scene showing the monks wrecking shit for a bit before getting overwhelmed and showing Gyatso suffocate everyone, then Aang goes into the Avatar State.
Could be a cool way to give the monks a bit more screentime for the viewers to check them out and spicing up the fairly-slow season 1 that might turn off some normies otherwise.
If they show it at any point earlier than that, or drag it out into a big expensive fight with subplots and so-on, I'll be mad.

Nah, they showed the aftermath, Gyatso dead in a room full of dead FN soldiers he probably suffocated.
The live action show wants to show the actual fight itself, monks blasting FN soldiers, nomad children getting burned to death, fire and air blasts shooting everywhere, that kind of thing, turning a "wait, what? That amulet looks famil- oh frick, Gyatso!" moment for both the viewer and for Aang into a straight-up war scene with probably a lot less impact and far less subtlety.

        Anonymous

I don't think showing the monks fighting back is really the best idea. For all the criticism the finale got; Aang's pacifism was ultimately something he got from the Air Nomads. It makes the Fire Nation look more monstrous if the invasion is a slaughter and Gyatso is the only one that gets pushed so far that he abandons his teachings and starts suffocating people.

The writers maintain the concept of sin but without a concept of redemption. Once you do something bad, you're bad period.

"Committing genocide" and "being sexist" are both sinful acts in this moral framework. That one sin is vastly worse than the other doesn't matter to the writers, because a character CANNOT be a hero once tainted by sin.

In other words, it's like that joke about finding shit on your sandwich. It doesn't matter whether the restaurant is serving you a BLT with a full turd lodged in there or just a little speck of brown smeared on the bread. The sandwich is ruined.

Considering Zhao and Zuko are attacking Kyoshi Island at the same time, I wonder if they are going to downplay Zuko's evilness.

          Anonymous

That'll be a tell for the show as a whole.
My guess (given the sexism thing with Sokka) would be that they offload the destruction and people threatening to Zhao, and give Zuko more of a laser-focus on Aang. He's an antagonist but not a "bad guy" like Zhao. Maybe throw in a bit where Zuko tries to rein in Zhao or defends the Kyoshi Islanders.

Normalgays like the people who write 99% of TV shows are honestly more autistic than actual autists. They can't think that leaving things implied means the audience will get it because they're incapable of thinking that abstractly or subtly so everything has to be literal.
