It's about being separated by distance AND time, baka. I thought everyone had that one friend/love interest that moved to another town and got totally alien to you with time, because you both have a lot of shit going on in your lives without anything to tie you up together anymore.
The whole point of the movie is how sad it is that the MC thought that they were star crossed lovers or something and continued idolizing a childhood friend. He missed multiple opportunities to pursue real happiness because of that, while his friend continued to live her life while cherishing the memories they made together. It's a very simple movie. I don't understand how you could miss that.
