Plot twist, the girl from volumes 1-4 and the girl from volumes 5-8 are different girls, the series is about a single father raising his daughter after his wife was killed by a demon lord, with him going on a quest to avenge her. Volumes 1-4 are the present day, while 5-8 are flashbacks, 9 is a mix of both, with the cover showing his late wife and his daughter before the wife was killed. The wife and daughter look exactly the same because it's anime.

The actual difference in age is a completely subjective point when it comes to determining whether the relationship is bad or not, context is really everything here. 17 is old enough that a relatively mature person can reasonably decide for themselves how old is "too old" for them. A 5 or 6 year age difference really is not all that much, especially depending on what the relationship between the two is actually like. Most people don't really change all that much between the age of 17 and their mid-20s.

Same age makes no sense, considering a major part of her character is that she's old enough to be treated like a member of the group but too young to be treated like an equal and her isolation and immaturity forces her to grow as a character. Even with the knowledge that they're going to make changes to the show from the books, making her 23 also drastically changes her entire character arc.
