That doesn't change the fact that it was a war of aggression that brought devastation and desolation to a peaceful place. If they really cared about stopping Muslim atrocities they should have helped reconquer Anatolia or Spain. Instead all they did was commit their own atrocities, and conquer land in a way that was unsustainable, and ensured the Muslims would be able to strike back at their leisure, which they did. The real disgrace though was the fourth crusade, which while not totally unprovoked irreparably damaged Christianity in that part of the world, and ensured that muslim turks would win. Take as a whole it must be concluded that the crusades were not just a failure, but put christendom in a worse position than if they had never happened at all.
