Why are you still posting about this movie? It's been out for like a year and half now.

I just watched this and I spent the entire movie repeating the words "this is reddit, this is memes, this is reddit, this is memes..." under my breath.
I fricking hated it. I was writhing around on the floor in front of the chair for the last 30 minutes it was so painful.
    >Ayy quirky A24 movie lmao
If you liked it you're in the wrong place

Multiverse shit as written by reddit, starring a geriatric Asian woman convinced she's still an action movie lead

Utter shit and by far the worst "best movie" in the history of the Oscars, which is saying something

I really liked it. The multiverse stuff is fun and as original as you can get with such a tired concept and it's anchored with great performances. I like the anti-nihilism messaging and the focus on family. Both the fact that it's centered on Asian people and that the daughter is gay felt like it served and informed the story and characters instead of just being a box to tick. The rock scene and the parking lot scene made me kinda emotional tbqh.

You'll notice that as per usual, the morons in this thread can never give any pointed criticism that doesn't boil down to "why isn't it about white people instead????" or "it's so fricking reddit i'm literally pissing myself right now".

very good and very human despite some cringe

and the cringeworthy parts get a pass because at least they tried to do something but it didn't quite work

I can't tell if I am too broken by the cynicism of the internet but I tried to stay open and just couldn't escape this feeling that it was trying too hard to be ~creative~ where they think weird means automatically deep. Also the constant jumping between worlds made it exhausting to watch.

    I liked it.

Then I got to the end and it was like "this is all a metaphor for ADHD"

And now I think it's shit.

had the potential of being a solid 9/10 up until the point where they reveal who the villain is and what her motivation is. at that point the resolution is painfully obvious and drags the movie down a lot
    >just stop being depressed lol
that's quite literally how they beat the villain
It's still a solid movie, about a 7, but it's either massively overrated or over hated. it's one of those flicks I'd have found brilliant as a teenager, but now the story and message are stale as frick. people who hate it are mainly shitposting, but the totality of people calling it a masterpiece are legitimately braindead
I had more to say but it's been two years since I've seen it so who the frick even remembers.

I liked it a lot watching it with my mom on Mother’s Day and it made me cry because my immigrant dad had just died and he would always force me to do his taxes. I love you dad.

The Daniels are cringy homosexuals and deserve death. Swiss Army Man is the only film I've ever walked out of the theatre on and I will never watch this buttplug plungin' hotdogfinger lickin' lolsorandom horseshit.

Not even joking. This board ruined this movie to me before I even watched it. Couldn't even focus on the movie because all I could think of was this phrase.

    It deserved the oscar.
Apart from it, the only REAL contender was Avatar 2, but I think people balked at the idea of giving a sequel to a movie made a decade later that had no real cultural impact the award.

It's accepted that the best movie of the year was Aftersun, then Banshees and Tar.

        Anonymous

Tar is run of the mill character portrait oscar bait.
        Not worth the oscar.
Banshees was actually good but also no. It's carried hard by the performances so it doesn't really qualify for best picture.
Aftersun is too indie to be considered as best picture, it's not even the best traumatic daughter retrospective of that year, which goes to The Eternal Daughter (2022)

It's not my opinion. I try to be objective. These three movies topped most of the best of lists of 2022.

I doubt they topped more than EEAAO though.

It's an alright attempt at a jackie chan film, but the comedy is REALLY hit or miss and the criticism of it being reddit isn't totally inaccurate. The whole multiverse shtick was mostly just used for the jokes and sometimes maybe if you're lucky would explore the main characters lives outside her own. The theme which a lot of people hyper-focused on wasn't all that well explored and boiled down to a really simple "there is no meaning but that's ok because hope and love!!!" that feels a bit cheap and for kids

It was kind of shit, at least it was mostly original shit

It's fun and worth seeing. Some of the humor is a bit early 2010s 'lolsorandum', but for the most part it's so quick-fire that the duds don't stick around for very long. The dynamics between the main cast (particularly the mother and father) are very authentic and likeable.
