This is what they do all the time. Whenever one person is getting them views and money and bringing in content, Jet has to come in and make it about himself and try to push the bit.
They could have left the three of them alone and let them do their thing, just give everyone challenges. Cole was a pretty poignant one, because despite him being pretty normal at that point, they had that gaslight circle where Sam and Jet convinced everyone that Cole wasn't good. Then directly after, Sam implies to Cole that the true purpose was to show him that poor people suck. Which is all well and good, and true, but Sam can leave the tank and go elsewhere, but Cole had 5 more weeks at that point. The Nina controversy is another thing, and that's been swept under the rug pretty good.

Jon and Mauro are a perfect microcosm of how the show works. You are rewarded for Mauro-like behavior and punished for Jon-like behavior. Season 2 was no different.
S2 was especially bad about this. They'd tell the fish how much they sucked and how boring they were and then told them it's production's job to be entertaining so just play to win. Then the fish would do something and the production would shut it down, then berate them for never doing anything. Challenges had no clear rules, start point, end point, they never knew how they'd be judged, and 90% of challenges they just dropped after having no rewards for them anyways, so fish just learned not even to really try in those.
The cast did suck for season 2 but production fricked up from the start casting 8 fans and Shinji and JC, then throughout by giving them complete learned helplessness.
I was addicted to season 1 and by the time season 2 was ending I was so checked out I was checking /ftl/ every few days to see if anyone got kicked yet. Absolutely crazy how much they fricked it up.

This is basically all that needs to be said about this season. The fish were all pretty dumb and wishy-washy to begin with, but production made the show a monumental frickup which they should be glad their freeloaders were able to salvage. "Learned helplessness" is the perfect term for what the contestants were feeling by probably the end of week two at the latest. Production came up with no rules, would constantly renege on the ones they arbitrarily set ten minutes before, had zero long-term challenges ready for the season, and would often be a detriment to whatever fish they were focused on even if the intent was to aid them. The whole thing was monumentally incompetent, which hurts even more because the house looked great, Bex did a great job with the theme, and the story - which never happened because Sam is a moron and listens to his zoomer Twitter followers who LARP as tradCaths - was interesting.
