Without looking it up right now I remember the world looking very detailed and being surprised that a game that was only there to promote the franchise instead of being its own thing had such a solid assortment of abilities/weapons.
Also the pet robot was cute and you could unlock abilities for it as well (even if they were useless to the gameplay iirc)

As far as CG comedies heavily inspired by Shrek go, Robots is one of the better ones. Shrek premiered when Ice Age was over halfway finished, so Blue Sky didn't took influence from it. Robots is a different story. Blue Sky started working on this around the same time that Shrek won the academy award.

They should've put the same effort on the storyline/character development/relationships as they did in everything else. Less hit or miss comedy would've been nice too.

Robots is just an armada of jokes, visual gags, innuendos, needle drops and pop culture references. There is barely a story here, plus character development or compelling relationships are nonexistent. It's a silly and fast paced film that doesn't dare to slow down or get serious.
You could say the same about the Dreamworks films of that era, but those films at least had some character development and compelling relationships. Blue Sky forgot to add that.
The only compelling relationship in Robots is the one between Rodney and his father Herb. Their interactions are the only time you'll feel some emotion when watching the film.
