I stopped watching before shippuden but I had a coworker who would tell me all about naruto and boruto
one thing I never understood was why Sasuke's eye power was so special? That one guy who fought Naruto in the tournament section also had a really powerful magical eye that was built up as if it was nearly as special, but I dont recall it ever being a relevant power. Wouldn't it make sense that it would be a natural counterpart to sasuke?
It was neglected because the dude who had those eyes wasn't a main character
So early on the show was truly about ninjas and guerrilla warfare. Most characters were attacking with knives, bombs, traps and hand to hand combat.
The elders briefly showed some powerful magic to foreshadow what you could eventually learn, but it wasn't supposed to be broken shit.
Kakashi had to spend 5 minutes making hand gestures and meditating just to make a water dragon splash that sent a big wave of water at you. That was the level that Naruto originally started out with.
Sasuke had this ability that gave him ultra sensory awareness. Faster reflexes and shit. They said someone with that can be almost super human. And when everything was low level it made sense it was powerful.
But the author is a hack who always wanted to be Dragonball and kept power creeping.
So eventually the sharingan went from making you see shit and react faster...to now granting you more Chakra....to putting people into mind dungeons to be tortured...to literally creating black holes from a distance that can destroy anything....to making black flames that burn forever and are an instant kill on contact...now it can summon a giant magic ethereal ghost armor that Sasuke pilots like a fricking mech.
Remember, Naruto was basically written on the spot. Shit just kept being glued on. Because they kept introducing stronger characters with stronger abilities (to the point that everybody stopped using knives bombs and traps and just started fights using lazers and explosions)
They had to keep making up shit that the sharingan can do.

I think Naruto is iconic enough to one day get an eventual reboot of the series after Boruto and its spin-offs are done and forgotten. The Naruto company is already dipping its toes with reanimating a few episodes of OG Naruto this year.
If I was in charge I’d want a total restructuring of the story and making better use of the ninja world setting. It should be a condensed series with focused seasons so it doesn’t run on for 500+ episodes. Writing should be tweaked to avoid the moronic powercreep in Shippuden

naruto should have been entirely about alliances and conflicts with other shinobi villages. we only ever got to see real ninja warfare and missions in flashbacks
That’s one of the reasons why the Zabuza arc stuck with so many people. Rogue ninjas, mafias. Village hidden in the Mist seemed mysterious and ominous. Felt like the series needed more missions like that at the forefront of the plot and should have focused more on developing the characters. Outside of filler a lot of the cast of Naruto have very shallow development throughout- including the main characters like Sakura.

I recently watched the movie "Road to Ninja" which is the last non canon film of Naruto (before The Last and Boruto the movie). And I was very surprised and amused seeing how Sakura was better written in a fanservice movie than in all of the 700 chapters of Naruto.

The literal first scene in Naruto shows a Giant demon fox Kaiju, the narrator says the ninjas of the village rised up to defend it and you hear one of the jonin say we have to hold it back until the 4th Hokage can get here and the scene ends when the 4th Hokage shows up standing on a Giant kaiju frog. This is all in the first 20 seconds of the first episode

For me, the show really shit the bed when they started introducing aliens. After that, it went downhill fast. Also, there was way too much filler. I dont mind a little bit of filler. But when your show is 41% filler, thats a fricking problem. The biggest thing that really pissed me off was the timeskip later on where naruto gets married instead of us seeing him be hokage. Its like they missed the point completely. Still, it would have been nice if we had more of pic related.
Not showing Naruto becoming the hokage really sucked, but I have to admit, episode 500 nicely completes episode 1 when it comes to Iruka/Naruto (Hinata is in both, too).

Likely because of how strict the manga industry is. Some butthole can have your manga axed with the snap of his fingers if he feels your manga isn't interesting. It must be especially tough now after One Piece, Dragon Ball, Naruto, and Bleach set the standards for what you need to do. Authors have to hook the audience as soon as possible before the editor throws your shit out the door.

Shame they didn't bring their best animators for it. If they had gotten the animators who did Kakashi vs Obito or Naruto vs Pain, it would have been one of the best fights in the series, but the animation was weirdly mediocre and made the whole thing felt mildly disappointing because of it.
