This show looks like some generic cartoon that they slapped Jame's character in for marketing purposes. You could replace the marshmallow guy with any generic male lead and the show wouldn't change at all.

He never tries to push any boundaries in his videos, so likewise his show is a pretty safe and generic slapstick kids comedy. Better for him to stay in his element than get in over his head with some pretentious lore show.

While that may be true, part of me expected that to be more a constraint imposed by having a very limited staff (started as just him) and having to kowtow to youtube's standards of brand safety and what not.
I suspect the kowtowing needed to appease Netflix is even worse. It would explain the deletion sprees he's been going on during the past few years, and if you're making a kids show you can't keep sneaking in yiffing jokes in the background like you can on YouTube, so you have to play it even safer.

At one level, I want to laud someone for working towards a goal for many years and finally achieving it. Putting effort into a singular task for years on end isn't easy, and it's nice when hard work is rewarded. But on the other hand...is that it? Of the whole swath of youtube animators you got a netflix deal and this is it? I couldn't even imagine what people like worthikids, umami, vewn, Aaron Long, Betsy Lee, or any of the other youtube animators who are doing solid to great things on the platform, sometimes by themselves. Starship Genuis/The Flood is a fricking masterpiece
His strengths are the stories he writes, the worldbuilding and especially his music. He's admitted that his animation skills aren't the best, even though they've improved since he started. They mostly serve as a vehicle to tell the story, and he's doing it in Blender because it's more convenient for him. He's mentioned that if he could he'd bring somebody on to make better animated stories.
Fan-works also help show how fricking good the stories and key scenes are.

Maybe I should have specified that I meant putting years of effort towards incrementally improving at a specific hobby or skill. People who work jobs for years on end usually plateau fairly quickly, at least from my experience. Part of this is because generically doing the same tasks over and over again don't necessarily yield successive substantive gains, Hell, in nearly all cases route repetition leads to a skill plateau very quickly. There's a reason why people don't get arbitrarily better at typing despite some people doing it every day of their lives for years on end. There's actually some interesting studies based on this very phenomenon that have been bastardized in the popular literature under the meme "the 10000 hour rule". In any case, I have no clue what story time animators do in their day to day lives, they may indeed be exactly as you say. I was just making a broad statement about how, in general, I like to not putdown those who, at least seem to be, trying to get progressively better at the things they are passionate about.

I mean, anon, I literally just said that I made that as a blanket statement, not something that was specifically targeted at James or any story time animators. Since I am pretty ignorant of what these people do and what work or lack there of goes into the production of their videos, I figured it'd be better to err on the side of caution and preface my opinion with a statement that disappointment was squarely focused on what I gleaned from the video and the material posted in this and past threads.
As for the other stuff, it wasn't at all a statement about James. Instead, it was just me mentioning that I like it when people who make consistent, substantive improvements in skills related to their passions because it can be difficult to do after a point using only route repetition. I used the example of typing to point out that, despite most people having typed nearly everyday for years on end, studies have found that the speed and accuracy of their typing levels off fairly quickly. With regards to the above, generically repeating the same tasks over and over again provides nominal gains over time. Conversely, consistent, substantive gains over long periods of time require one to go far beyond route repetition. It requires one to deliberately push themselves past their perceived limits over and over again, usually failing many times in the process before any tangible results materialize. Therefore, people who are able to truly hone their craft are those that have displayed true grit, perseverance, and drive, and it's nice to see that rewarded. James and his ilk may be like Bendis, putting years into his craft with no noticeable increase in quality, but I was stating my admiration for people like Sim who improved with age.

I remember discovering TheOdd1sOut back when he had under 100,000 subscribers. There was a certain charm to the early video. It wasn't just story time animation it was about whatever was on James's mind at the time. (quite of few of which are deleted now)
I still watched the channel over the years but as time went on I stopped caring less and less as the video seem to lean more towards the younger demographic that was watching. (I actually prefer Jaiden Animation because her animation style and video topics feel like they aren't aimed at just 10 year olds)
I predict James will stop uploading on his youtube channel except for promotion videos for the show and then come back when the show is cancelled after 2 seasons.
