It's not THAT interesting. They were basically just meta-contrarians.

TL;DR: They were a clique of European performance artists, poets and theatergays who believed that if Rationality and Logic lead to the horrors of World War 1 then they should reject all Rationality and Logic. Their art was almost always just nonsense and weird arts and crafts.

          >this leads to a certain austrian painter to get rejected from art school because he wasn't dadaist enough
Well, that didn't work so well now did it.

No? I think Hitler wanted to become a honest painter and not a guy who makes architecture art for architects.

Oh my god...you might be onto something.

Ironic, the art style that was meant to stop war created war inevitably

            > His test drawings were judged unsatisfactory and he was not admitted. Hitler was badly shaken by this rejection. He went back to the academy to get an explanation and was told his drawings showed a lack of talent for artistic painting, notably a lack of appreciation of the human form. He was told, however, that he had some ability for the field of architecture. But without the required high school diploma, going to the building school and after that, the academy's architectural school, seemed doubtful.

Reminds me that a main reason for Lovecraftian Horror being bleak is because he started writing in earnest after the end of the War.

Hell Dagon, his first story in that Mythos was about a US Navy sailor that get's captured by a German warship and escapes, leading to the titular mysterious island.

its means creating """"art"""" that steers away from traditional values of what is considered art. Like a canvas with a banana taped to it, or period blood smeared all over a replica painting of the Mona Lisa. Or just simply having NOTHING THERE!

that's still art. What is art but something to envoke reaction out of people? Good or bad?
