That's very likely what happened originally, that they just had all their bones broken and crushed into pulp to fit down the tail chute, then absorbed into Cell's system. The problem came up when Toriyama decided that Cell's power would revert when Gohan hit him. Toriyama probably sat there wondering how that could occur and could only come up with that Cell has to release one of the androids. He wasn't going to draw them being thrown up with ground beef flesh and broken noodle arms and legs, that'd be horrible to look at, even for a kids manga. So he just opted to have Cell bring #18 up whole

Krillin probably was nervous to tell the horrifically traumatized child soldier that one of the things who butchered his world in his timeline, was now his wife. Withholding that information from Trunks, all the way up past till #18 walked out on the patio, was the stupidest thing Krillin ever did in the series and that's saying a lot. And it was very cruel and unfair to Trunks, to almost have laid his wife's life at Trunks' feet, if he accidentally killed her in his fury. Reminds me a bit of that decorated sniper who brought a PTSD veteran out on a shooting range and gave him a gun, who then turned around and promptly shot him to death. It too was one of those "the frick you think was gonna happen?" moments

This storyline would have only worked if Trunks stomped Cell’s imperfect form and prevented him from evolving. But DBZ doesn’t do that, it always goes worse-case-scenario. DBZ is like if in Harry Potter, Voldemort ended up uniting with the full power elder wand plus control of the other deathly hallows.
I think cell throwing up some viscous liquid that ended up congealing into Android 18 would have been a lot better. Perhaps they didn’t have the budget for it?
An in-universe explanation would be that Cell's body transforms the androids into ki energy, which removes their physical form. And when the androids leave Cell's body they regain their physical form.
I'm pretty sure that would have to be it, because Cell absorbed thousands of human beings too, I don't think he was sucking up their meat into his body, even though the humans lose their physical form. So they must be transformed into pure energy/spirit and their physical self just disappears.
From the way he melted that guy in Ginger Town, Cell was melting people down like a spider might, making them into a soup of sorts and then just drinking it up. He only ate organic tissue and left the clothing, but didn't seem to be put off from eating #17's gun, scarf, etc
Piccolo and Tien Cell saga moments were my favorites. Simply because I got sick and tired of super sayians and the rest of the Z warriors being neglected.
It's easily the GOAT arc, as short as it is and mostly for the reasons you stated. Best fight in the entire series (Piccolo v 17), best moment in the entire series (Tien holding back a guy with 100000000000x his power level), and Goku too busy dying from covid to ruin everything with his typical overpowered main character I'll-do-everything bullshit
wtf does that mean? in that case no one ever accomplished anything, every main villain Piccolo, Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, Buu all went through a gauntlet of all the Z-fighters and beat them all until Goku (or Gohan) + team assists win in the end. Everyone accomplished way less against Frieza than they did against Buu. If it wasn’t for Gotenks and Gohan, Buu would have destroyed the Earth immediately and moved on. The only reason any of them lasted for more that 2 minutes against Frieza was because Frieza literally wanted to frick around because he’s so strong and was just having some fun against some guys who actually are trying to stand up to him for once. Frieza didn’t get serious until after they spirit bombed him but before that even Vegeta and Piccolo with their power boosts were less than nothing to Frieza and he could have killed them all whenever he wanted UNTIL Goku became a super saiyan. Gotenks and Gohan on the other hand were battling and beating the ever loving shit out of Buu and Gohan was even holding it down after Gotenks got absorbed until Goku showed up. Imperfect Cell was honestly one of the most kino villains of the series. Due to his power limitations he was more cunning and strategic in how he fought. After he transforms he becomes just a mediocre version of Frieza

That's very likely what happened originally, that they just had all their bones broken and crushed into pulp to fit down the tail chute, then absorbed into Cell's system. The problem came up when Toriyama decided that Cell's power would revert when Gohan hit him. Toriyama probably sat there wondering how that could occur and could only come up with that Cell has to release one of the androids. He wasn't going to draw them being thrown up with ground beef flesh and broken noodle arms and legs, that'd be horrible to look at, even for a kids manga. So he just opted to have Cell bring #18 up whole

And it was very cruel and unfair to Trunks, to almost have laid his wife's life at Trunks' feet, if he accidentally killed her in his fury. Reminds me a bit of that decorated sniper who brought a PTSD veteran out on a shooting range and gave him a gun, who then turned around and promptly shot him to death. It too was one of those "the frick you think was gonna happen?" moments
I'd have liked to see Trunks go maximum Spopovich on #18 when he got back to his timeline too, to make her pay dearly for what she did, beating her nice and slow. It wouldn't be in-character though. Trunks was always a man of getting the job done right there and then, by any means. He even threatened to kill his father if it meant not allowing Cell to complete himself. That's one of Trunks' most respectable character qualities
I have mixed feelings about how Trunks destroyed the androids. While it makes sense character wise and plot wise how easily Trunks destroyed them, I wish the fight lasted a bit longer. It felt so rush. I wanted to see the androids 2 v 1 Trunks fighting on the back foot realizing how outclassed they are. Essentially a reverse Gohan vs Androids. Also I wish he kept the long hair. An in-universe explanation would be that Cell's body transforms the androids into ki energy, which removes their physical form. And when the androids leave Cell's body they regain their physical form.
I'm pretty sure that would have to be it, because Cell absorbed thousands of human beings too, I don't think he was sucking up their meat into his body, even though the humans lose their physical form. So they must be transformed into pure energy/spirit and their physical self just disappears.
From the way he melted that guy in Ginger Town, Cell was melting people down like a spider might, making them into a soup of sorts and then just drinking it up. He only ate organic tissue and left the clothing, but didn't seem to be put off from eating #17's gun, scarf, etc

Imperfect Cell was honestly one of the most kino villains of the series. Due to his power limitations he was more cunning and strategic in how he fought. After he transforms he becomes just a mediocre version of Frieza

it was also a moment in the manga and anime in wich the tournaments had been mostly forgotten even though they had been so present in the original series.
Him giving them time to train was also such a noble act and show how sure he was of his powers and how he really didnt want to destroy humanity, only win.
