I pirated wish because my kid wanted to see it. It looked nice but the movie was so safe with no intentional villain or even a problem I was bored out of my mind. My kid is young so he enjoyed the flick but even half way towards the end he was like "what was that? There was no bad guy" he meant conflict but I get what he was saying. I got the sleeping beauty references and even the other yidsney call backs but damn that movie was terrible.

It's not even a planet from the sequel trilogy, it's a Donut Steel planet made specifically for the theme park. Which isn't an entirely bad idea since in theory you could have that spaceport feature rides that take you to all the stuff people like from the wider franchise like in the modern Star Tours, but they were so committed to their "Episode 8.5" storyline that they couldn't do something like relocate Star Tours or even give the Millennium Falcon ride multiple missions. Of course the Falcon thing is specifically the fault of the overpriced LARP hotel incorporating what you do on the Falcon ride into its plot, so it was just easier for the Falcon to go on one adventure to give the LARP's shitty app management only one variable to deal with.
They're at least loosening the leash on walkaround characters by bringing in various streaming show characters, but they're still too stubborn to just go "Frick it, we're putting meet and greets with Darth Vader and Luke here and we'll put Anakin and Padme over here".

So those two groups who manage the shares get to influence Disney instead of the individual shareholder. The biggest single problem was not having an outline for the sequel trilogy from the beginning. JJ did his signature soft reboot mystery box shit, which laid a very week foundation. Then Rian threw everything out the window. Then they fired Trevorrow, and brough JJ back to shit out an ending. Kathleen should have been able to recognize these problems early on, but she's a woman.

TLJ really fricked them over, as gay and shitty and series-ruining as TFA was. That idiot JJ is the one who intentionally kiboshed a reunion of Luke, Han and Leia. I'm not usually one for memberberries but this is Star Wars we're talking about, Luke Skywalker, the protagonist of white western fantasy. Anyway, so Abrams should be cast out of Hollywood for his handling of the series, but TLJ is the one that's most incredible to me. I don't know how that movie was allowed to be filmed and released with the name 'Star Wars' on it. The writing is terrible (Holdo not telling Poe she has a plan causes a mutiny, then she reveals her plan was 'run out of gas and hide on the nearest planet' and Poe is fine with it/The token minorites go to a casino planet to find an uberhacker, the only known person who can breech Imperial cyber defenses - he blows them off, they get arrested, and there just happens to be a guy in their cell who can also hack the unhackable firewall) and the entire procession seemed designed to mock people for liking Star Wars. TFA and R1 weren't poorly received, they didn't have to let Rian Johnson burn it all down completely.

Disney is terminally fricked across the board. The people that have finagled themselves into executive positions are spending more than $200 million on tv series that find no audiences and either get cancelled after one season or buried forever. If you were to do an enema on the company I'm sure you'd find that 80% of their management should be liquidated based on results.

The 200 million on series is what I don't understand. Streaming needs content, the more the better. They need to be making made for TV movies and syndicated show type stuff like the stuff that was made for TV in the 80s & 90s Stuff that is cheap but enjoyable. They went from making shows for the Disney channel to insisting everything needs to be a blockbuster. It's like everything needs to be bigger than the last &that's unsustainable

They tried to milk the series for everything it was worth immediately to try and make back what they spent on it. Reminder Disney said they would make a Star Wars movie every year until we didn't want one anymore and that only died with Solo and Rise of Skywalker. At the end of the day they went into the new movies with a very short sighted approach which is the main reason the sequels are garbage and pale in comparison to even the prequels since they at least had a plan. Next Star Wars will have an even worse time than Rise of Skywalker.

bullshit, there are modern female led movies that are really good but conveniently ignored by the feminist types. Alita, and Rita from Live Die Repeat come to mind for example. The issue with feminists though is that these strong females are also capable of falling in love with men, and willing to die and fight for them. Captain Marvel, the live action princesses, and other shit strong women movies suck because they don't need no man, but in a negative sense. They downplay men, they make men incompetent, etc.

Alita falls in love with that human guy and after he dies, she makes it her goal to go up to kill Nova. Rita starts out like your typical strong female persona but we learn why she is like that and eventually falls in love with Tom Cruise's character. Both characters don't become weak because they fall in love, on the contrary they become stronger because of the need to protect them or to work together with them.

        Anonymous

It did come with a huge built-in audience. The fact that the first mainline movie makes 2 billion and a spinoff makes 1 billion spoke volumes about how much of a beloved and hyped IP Star Wars is.

The fact that they fumbled it so hard that Disney is too scared to release any new movies in the franchise because it's going to bomb is just hilarious.

They bought an IP with legs and proceeded to hamstring it in every conceivable manner. Bizarre business practice that ended up producing exactly the predicted results. Every failure followed by some smug assurance that they knew what they were doing, using a million excuses as cope. Sometimes it's exactly as simple as it appears.

      >As we revealed, the methodology is questionable as Disney based the ROI on the revenue generated by the movies, merchandise, DVDs and Blu Rays rather than the profit they made as it should have done. Using the revenue rather than the profit artificially inflates the result as it doesn't factor in the costs that Disney had to pay out.
      >Even this wasn't enough for the media giant so it also forecast the revenue that it expected the Star Wars movies, merchandise, DVDs and Blu Rays to generate over a ten-year period and based the calculation on that too. In other words, Disney hasn't actually received the revenue that it used to calculate the return on its investment.

This. I work in Finance for a Fortune 10 corporation and I know Disney took a bath on this. Any article stating they made a ROI knows nothing about business. The net operating costs and marketing must be insane. Plus, a $500m profit is a failure if the goal was a $1b. The way Disney has pulled back on producing Star Wars media is proof it doesn't make money. It's switched from a profit channel to a cost channel.

The clickbait is that she is comparing the profit from Disney's five Star Wars movies to the £4 billion purchase price of Lucasfilm.
Much like Disney, she is not making a fair comparison.
Everything should be factored into the calculation, she doesn't factor in the TV shows for example, while Disney don't factor in Indiana Jones and Willow.

If they're making any money off the merchandising on Star Wars, then it is from the OT stuff only. The ST stuff ain't selling at all.

It is likely that George Lucas retains a lot if not all of the merchandising rights to OT, which is why Disney was so desperate to pivot as quickly as they can to ST shit and even disrespect the OT in their movies so that people jump ship to the new stuff.

          Anonymous

True. Who knows how much of the merchandizing right Lucas kept. Iirc he famously got most of the rights to the OT, which is where he made his money. But I doubt Disney would by Star Wars without a sizable cut of the earnings the merch brings in.
I think the NT pivot was Disney attempt to bring in the adolescent-teenage-millennial girl market they saw with the likes of Harry Potter, Twilight, and Hunger Games. Disney knew they had boys locked down with the OT and prequels.

Their merchandise and theme parks are fuelled by their films. It's a symbiotic relationship. If the brand and the content it produces becomes tainted then it runs down the line and will eventually impact those parks and merchandise, if it hasn't already.

        Anonymous

Theme Parks have been the primary engine of the company since the 70s and most of their classic rides were the product of "The studio can't do a goddamn thing in this genre so we gotta make something compelling on our own with it instead". While things shifted under Eisner when they started making good movies again or making deals with other companies, there was still a balance between tie-in and original content. The "pre-established IPs only" mandate was something Iger created and the only way Imagineering can really make anything new now is to tie it into their SEA lore since "If you can make a decent adaptation of one of our rides, you can start another cinematic universe" is enough of a hook for the higher ups to let them develop the groundwork.

No shit. Movies rarely make billions of dollars. Merch sales are where the dimes get drawn, and the cultish consoooooomer mindset of both Disney and SW fangoys means that they've probably made back that 4 billy back multiple times over through toy sales alone.

I remember seeing the Special Editions at the cinema and the very first thing me and half the other kids who watched did was drag our parents straight to Toys'R'Us and try to badger them into getting us something(Luke figure for ANH, Snowspeeder for Empire, and got an A-Wing and B-Wing after Jedi - cost me weeks of pocket money). Same sort of shit with the Prequels. With Disneywars, they're lucky if any of the audience *are* children, and I think I noticed one that was actually hyped enough to not immediately sink back into the Phone Zone the moment they got out of their seats.

Even if they had made back the raw cash they invested in buying the franchise, which we now have proof they didn't, but even if they had Disneywars would still be a failure because the Sequels have failed to do what all previous cinematic eras of the franchise did: create a whole new generation of obsessive fans who'll still be buying your shit twenty or thirty years down the line.

Banning females from work is a shit idea, bans of any kind simply don't work in a post-internet world. What WOULD work with women is social engineering, because they are easily influenced. We need to bring back shaming. Not even 50 years ago a girl would be scared shitless of being considered an old maid femcel, and would marry as soon as she left high school. My mom is 52 and she said that her school friends used to tell her that all childless women go insane when they get old. We need to bring back this sentiment.

        Done.

Going by the films alone, without any consideration of merch or post release DVD and home release data, ~~*Disney*~~ only managed to generate about $980 million, which isn't even 1/4 of the reported $4 billion they paid Lucas.

Now let's look at the D+ TV trash: source - screen rant
        >The Mandalorian isn't the most expensive - costing $120 million for one season.
        >The Obi-Wan Kenobi series had the lowest budget at $90 million for six episodes
        >Andor, the prequel to Rogue One, is the most expensive Star Wars TV show yet, with a budget of around $250 million for 12 episodes.
        >Ahsoka’s budget has yet to be revealed – but it’s expected to be more than $100 million.
        > seems likely that the budget for Disney+'s The Book of Boba Fett will match that of The Mandalorian season 1: A whopping $100 million.

That's another $660 million invested, so if you subtract those costs from the profit they made from the films: $980 - $660 = $320 million in proft.

So they've made a whopping total of $320 million in profit from film and TV after paying Lucas $4 billion dollars. That means they have to make up those costs elsewhere, and NOBODY is buying Nu-Wars merch, or the shit they're pushing on the TV.

So no, they've haven't made their money back from the films and TV shows. Not when you consider costs.

          Anonymous

Didn't they also spend 2 billion dollars for their LARP hotel that closed within a year?

The closest we got to Disney admitting anything is that they made 12 billion dollars on Star Wars. Who knows if that's revenue or profit, but people are running with it and claiming a 3x ROI.

I forgot to add a couple. Here's the Willow tv series....
          >According to Forbes: Disney has revealed that it spent $105.9 million (£83.1 million) on making Willow, a sword and sorcery series which was dropped from its streaming platform after just six months.

So total TV costs are estimated at about $760 mil.

Now for the Indiana Jones flop:
          >Dial of destiny total budget / marketing costs: $450 mil
          >Net box office earnings: $190 mil
          >Total net LOSS of: $260 mil

So if we take away another $260 mil from the Lucasfilm box office profit totals we get: $980 mil profit - $260 mil losses = $720 mil profit.

So they managed to earn $720 mil in profit from the Lucasfilm movies, but sank at LEAST $760 mil into their ~~*Disney +*~~ trash that nobody watches, and that's without consideration for any TV marketing costs. They may have spent $4 BILLION dollars only to end up with a net LOSS of $40 million dollars as a result of woke agenda crap, and terrible decision making.

Well done, ~~*Disney*~~. Well done indeed.

Except for Solo (and non-Star Wars Indy 5) they all grossed $1 billion, one almost made $1 billion just in North America. That means audiences watched the movies. It's Disney's fault that they couldn't profit from $5 billion in theater attendance of 5 movies

Doesn't matter. Net profits are what counts, and they made about $980 mil from all their new star wars stuff, and lost another $260 mil from their Indiana Jones bomb. A $720 mil net from Lucasfilm franchise films is absolutely abysmal, and frankly, negligent on their part for the stock holders. Especially when it cost them $4 billion to get the rights for that shit.
