Seinfeld is "serious" in the sense that he takes his job as a comedian seriously. He is technical and proficient in his jokes rather than being loose and hanging them on his personality.

Jerry was the bland straight man in the writers room too. He kept the plots normal while David wanted to make cartoonish events happen. Neither would have made a great show on their own but the mixing of the two worked out for Seinfeld. It still worked out with George's schemes being the main driver of the plots most of the time. Jerry was just the normal guy watching it all happen.
