I think the Vong hate stemmed from the death of Chewbacca more than anything. R.A Salvatore who wrote Vector Prime got death threats because of that book for years.
Just adapt the Thrawn trilogy, Luuke's name doesn't even need to be said out loud. Or Dark Empire even, show Disney how Palpatine returning is done.

It's a little bit overrated because it came after a drought of Star Wars media but it's still a pretty good story with interesting new characters, planets, and species.

Jump to the very end of the timeline after Crucible and use Lucas' treatments where Luke is retired and in exile studying the Force. Don't specifically contradict any previous story, but don't revolve the story around those elements.
Instead of Talon, use a Sith Empire in the Unknown Regions so everything can stay nice and isolated.

Hell no. That's not interesting whatsoever. Why do you morons have such trouble comprehending the concept you don't follow up a victory/happy ending with "then they all fell apart and became failures before the next movie". Luke had a successful academy, a loving wife, and stayed good friends with the Solo family who weren't divorced failures with estranged psychopathic murderous children.
In this case he succeeded at everything though, choosing at the end of his life to step down and search tbe mysteries of the Force. There's nothing wrong with that.

if we’re assuming the main cast was as old as they were when the Disney sequels came out, they could either do NJO (as others mentioned), LOTF, or FOTJ. I know Lucas’s treatments had Darth Talon in it, so another possibility could be doing a Legacy adaptation.

Why make a 7-9 in the first place though? The sage is 1-6. The main story ends at 6 so it doesn't make sense to tack on more to it.
They can continue the story with older OT characters and their children but those movies would need a different title. They would basically all be anthology spin offs kind of like Rogue One but can be trilogies if needed.
Speaking of names, it's moronic how the naming convention for Star Wars titles has become the name of the main character like marvel. They are all uncreative hacks over there, every last one of them

That depends on whether you think the "main story" is Darth Vader's story (which is wrong) or Luke's story (which is objectively correct). Luke's story doesn't naturally end at the battle of Endor. He's got his whole life ahead of him.
By main story I guess I meant the fall of the Republic and Empire but obviously there is more story that can be told for all the characters and factions. 1-6 is a nicely packaged saga. If they did Heir to the Empire for example, and called it 7-9, it doesn't really make sense because that stuff doesn't really have anything directly to do with what the saga was about even though it is a continuation of that story

The Thrawn Trilogy could easily be done in one movie. Just because it was three books, doesn't mean the story actually needed to be told in three books. It could've been done in one, but Zahn felt like being up his own ass back then.
