It’s always been popular among the same type of people who go to Disneyland and wear Harry Potter merchandise casually.
It was specifically the one two punch of Haunted Mansion Holiday and Kingdom Hearts (which included Nightmare because Japan loved it from the start) that caused Nightmare to blow up so much.
