Maybe a position like that in real life would create value, but that's the point. The movie is pretty clear about the fact he does nothing at work. All of his interactions with his secretary are about his social schedule and he throws his feet up and watches TV in the office. The whole movie is projection at another segment of American society.

I work at a print shop and I bust ass. Apparently a decade ago they had like 20 people. Less than half that now, same amount of work. I'm mentally and physically exhausted. It doesn't help I don't like the general public and have to help an insane number of pajeets. Like so many Jesus Christ. And old fat people who don't know how to email from a phone.

It's decent pay and I'm indoors and realistic about my prospects. Still it's dogshit work. At least there's little accountability. I'd have to scream obscenities at a customer or deliberately break shit or steal something to get fired. I was 20 minutes late yesterday and nobody gave a shit.

            Anonymous

I got fired yesterday - over text.
I missed their call, all temps (like I was) normally get guaranteed 2 years.

I was playing on my phone at the end, just before the official end of shift and my efficiency rating (production job) has been low but that's explainable (no parts/machine down) and no one has said anything to me about work rate in weeks...

              Anonymous

I worked in a call center and even though I kicked ass, those efficiency reports are soulless and awful. Let's just reduce humans to a bunch of numbers and then try to turn it into a game. Frick that. I got burned out after a year and quit.

Consider yourself lucky and get a different job.

          Anonymous

same. I work 3rd shift IT and get a call maybe once a day. I sleep on shift sometimes cause 3rd shift is rough. I wanna switch to programming so I feel like I do something. most people don't enjoy being lazy, surprisingly.

There's nothing inherently worthless with Bateman's job title but it was obvious in the book/movie that Bateman got his position through nepotism/cronyism and social status and doesn't do any actual work. I'm in the same position tbh but in a less well paid industry and at a lower level.

Who does this actually describe to a fricking T?

      Women.

He secretly wrote a story about how stupid, vapid, and shallow modern women are by swapping the genders of the characters to men so that idiots wouldn't notice, but Bateman and the other yuppies are very clearly thinking and behaving exactly like women. And then the icing on the cake is that the absolute madman got a feminist to make it into a movie.

Bret Easton Ellis is a gay man and he wrote Bateman as a closeted gay man. He's obsessed with his appearance, his dress, the dress of others, status etc.
This is translated well in the movie. When Bateman is fricking those gorgeous call girls he's looking at himself in the mirror. And he's so horrified when Luis sees through his bullshit that he immediately runs off to kill someone.

The book was written by a gay man as a commentary on the preening faux-virtuous style of masculinity that was fashionable among the young New York upper-class at the time. The movie did a good job translating the book to film.

This. And Ellis was purportedly very happy with how the film turned out.

One of the rare occasions when a film adaptation basically nails it and presents a highlight reel of scenes straight from the book. I wish they could've included the part with Bono and some of the more frantic psychotic moments but that might've shifted things too far into the avant-garde. It's totally understandable why they toned down the gore. I don't need to see a woman's eyes burned out with a lighter and cut in half with a chainsaw to reveal the rat that was shoved up her pussy.

You’re both morons. I’m sorry, but if you think everyone who follows Schwarzenegger’s regime is going to end up looking like him you’re the ones who are delusional. Genetics are an actual thing. It’s obvious. No, they won’t cause t you to become obese if you exercise and eat right, but they will cause one person to be predisposed to put on fat while another person puts on muscle.

I was a fat frick as a kid. Other than fricking around in the woods I was completely sedentary. When I stopped eating as much crap and exercising I could put on muscle just by touching a weight. I wasn’t lifting or eating right and I still bulked up pretty good. No, and the entire critique can be used against Hollywood. Every second of that show screams "Hollywood elites." Their entire existence is the pinnacle of capitalist excess. LBJ's great society bullshit that we currently are still suffering under was JFK's idea, and he actually wanted to take it further

He was assassinated by the mafia because the mafia are who helped him get elected (go look up the election shenanigans in Chicago in 1960) under the promise he would force the FBI to drop their investigation of them, which he did not do. JFK's dad was literally a rum runner for the Chicago mob in the 1920s.

JFK was the white Obama. The fact people still worship the c**t as the second coming despite bungling nearly every god damned political issue that happened during his presidency is proof of how powerful the cult of personality surrounding him is

It's not putting bricks together with mortar
It's "work", a solar flare would result in mass unemployment for the financial sector.

If I called blue collar work "labor" would that please you?
There is labor (work) and then there is pushing paper ("work"). One is essential to keeping humanity fed and sheltered, one is not.
We need an actuarial class for our capitalist society, but not as many as we have.

              Anonymous

The white collar laborers are the reason the farmer has farming equipment. You can't have a coordinated logistics system (required for modern technology) with just laborers as you define it.

                Anonymous

You moved the goalposts. Logistics is another kind of white collar work. Do we need people whose only job is the trading of assets? The financial sector is filled with such people by definition.
Retail trading in particular resulted in a wealth transfer from the lower and middle class to the upper class. We saw this during the pandemic before interests rates went way up.

The difference is, one is convenience and the other is necessity. Farmers don't NEED machinery to do their jobs, it just makes it easier for them. White collar jobs absolutely need the blue collars or else they all starve to death in a pile of their own filth.

Stop consuming sugar. Can not stress that enough.
      Eat protein rich diet.
If you do not change your diet, your work out would be meaningless, and you will not see much of a physical change outside of getting stronger and have more stamina

        Anonymous

You need glucose for energy. Isn't sucrose energy as well?

Put another way, if I ate a tablespoon of sugar and then ran a mile, wouldn't it be burned off?

          Anonymous

I meant artificial sweeteners, such as sugar, the one that's not in fruits.
Then you'd be losing gains since your energy consumption would use other tissues while adding/storing fats from sugar (not burned).
Hence, protein rich diet is the one you need if your goal is to have a physique like Bateman

Not to mention the crash and burn after said "energy" from sugar.
Go for rest and protein for energy.
After a hard workout the body needs restitute to build muscle and save energy for next workout

Way to miss the forest for the trees

This dude is so rich and protected from the consequences of his actions that out of sheer boredom and more than a little desperation to prove he even exists he starts committing crimes. He starts with killing (and eating, as he imports the corporate raider mentality even into his personal life) the most vulnerable members of society, the homeless and prostitutes. This does not get him the attention he wants so he starts killing people he knows. This escalation still fails to accomplish anything; he gets away with the most heinous crimes with no effect on himself.
