Okay this was insanely good. I forgot movies could have a message but not beat you over the head with it.

Okay this was insanely good. I forgot movies could have a message but not beat you over the head with it. As a dude who grew up in the 90s and is feeling old now... the themes really made me feel like I was watching a movie about myself.

Just incredible. Please stop making overproduced slop and just get back to the heart of cinema.

You know this movie was made by a troony as an allegory for being a troony right? Was your childhood spent becoming a troony?

If you can't relate to an idea, concept, or theme because you don't agree with it then you are not only a bigot but an idiot as well.

Lel have a nice day troony sympathizer. You deserve the world you have.

There's nothing wrong with being a bigot.

If the ideas, concepts, and themes are inherently false, then you're an idiot to accept them without being discerning and critical of them. I'm sorry, but being a troony, which is putting on the airs of the opposite sex and getting gender re-assignment surgery/hormone therapy is wrong all the way through. It should be contradicted in-season and out of season wherever it is met.

What does that have to do with the movie ? That's literally just the subtext. The actual theme is way more relatable to pretty much 95% of humans

          Anonymous

Not that anon but I think he meant that you should be able to appreciate cinema no matter the final takeaway or subtext. For the filmmaking itself rather than agreeable themes. Like people appreciate something like Battleship Potemkin despite it being a propaganda piece (not comparting the quality of films here).

            He said
            >if you can't relate to an idea, concept or theme
            He never said
            >if you can't appreciate the production values of a film
In either case, a films set design, costuming, cinematography, is typically planned and produced with enhancing the core themes and messaging of the film in mind. You can't really appreciate one without the other, or at least I can't think of a film I've ever seen where I was against the message and theme, but still appreciated the artistry, and I watch a ton of movies.

Well I dislike communism but I think Battleship Potemkin is one of the greatest films ever made.
Maybe I am misinterpreting what he said. But still, it is possible to appreciate the form while disagreeing with what the film's core. This is really the media literacy thing all over again. Starship Troopers was absolutely intended as satire but it can be appreciated without looking at it as satire. This film was also vague enough in it's themes to have various interpretations, not just troonism but generally failing in life and longing for youth. I have nothing against people criticizing films for the actual filmmaking, but I don't like when people dismiss films for their themes. Although I understand that when a person treats cinema as a casual hobby and not that invested in cinema as art. But this movie is not exactly a casual type viewing either.

Starship Troopers works because the messaging is so vague. A film that is an outright prop piece, with the thematics front and center, can not be appreciated artistically apart from the theme.

Well in the case of I Saw the TV glow it IS vague enough. When you know it's about dysphoria you start seeing obvious hints at that, but also you see other elements that can be interpreted differently.
But also I again disagree with something NEEDING to be vague. But I guess understand the sentiment. But like again, early communist cinema is excellent, yet not particularly vague. At least the Eisenstein works. Vertov's work wasn't as blatant most of the time.

I thought the previous movie of "theirs" was mediocre. Also your post reads like bait, not someone actually posting about liking the movie.
I will probably pirate it when there's good quality to see if it's an improvement over the previous one. There were good elements there.

The first one had low production and was still a good watch. Think about the same overall style of Worlds End but with production and more ambition.
Don't pirate it. Just check it out in theaters it's worth supporting good kino.

Fricking bullshit film, I don't care if there's an agenda so long as the film's actually good.

Armond actually reviewed it negatively and that Schrader quote is less of a compliment and more of a "I don't want to get canceled so here are some compliments while also being being negative" quote. Cope. Seethe. Dial 8.

        >the review was actually negative even tho it reads like a mixed to positive review, and the RT counts it and Fresh (the score is approved by the author of the review after their mods evaluate the review)
