The ending was a bit meh he was out of danger of any sort of prosecution at that point, some people believing they saw Jude Law's character on a boat wouldn't have changed that. no reason for him to go le crazy and kill his partner

      >no reason for him to go le crazy and kill his partner
You imply rational thinking, which is not always the case in people. Logical story telling is preferred over logical human behavior

Yeah, I can more or less accept that. He was getting increasingly stressed as the movie went on, perhaps past the point of thinking/acting reasonably. It's just that he was such a careful schemer at so many other points in the movie... I don't know, feels like he went slightly out of character for a haunting and dramatic finish to the story. They could've written it so he was more obviously fricked and out of options on the boat, and not just lashing out like that. Or better showcase him being in a psychotic state. He didn't seem to be losing it *that* much prior to the ending.

Oh yeah. It's been a while since I watched it. It is true, the ending it particular stood out as too irrational to me as well. It was out of character, I agree. I was thinking about Gwyneth Paltrow, but perhaps he didn't even kill her. Been 14 years since I saw the movie

Still a great movie if not a perfect one(how many of those are there?) worth a rewatch I'd say. The atmosphere is supremely comfy, and all of the characters great. PSH's stands out to me. Best portrayal of a WASP I've ever seen; a superior douchebag, but never hostile about being so, always acts like he's doing you a favor by interacting with you. "Old money" rich people are all like that

I agree 1000% with this. His character is what stood out the most to me as well and I became a fan of his after the movie, precisely for the reasons you said, just perfect as an not-overly but still pretentious douche. The perfect duchebag.

It honestly is really good, that late 90s to early 2000s Matt Damon kino just hits different.

The moment I remember the most from the film is Matt Damon's "..hey"
      It's just so perfectly erratic. https://youtu.be/KZaCY8iU_70?si=GmL1e5aSkn7P3Y_r&t=45 1:11
Such a good dialogue. When he threatens with the punches (unlike current movies where he'd probably hit). zoomers don't get depictions of regular human interactions anymore, it's insane

I think the reason I come back to it are the summer vibes, and the psychological aspects.
With this and Purple Noon, it seems like the material is pretty well exhausted, so I'm honestly not even going to bother with the new show, looks really lame.

Is Purple Noon worth watching if I like Talented Mr Ripley?

I'd say it's worth watching, period.
t's vastly different in tone than Ripley, but it is based on the same book.

I love movies depicting the mediterranean in the 1960s so much. The music. The film. The footage. I haven't watched Purple Noon but I'm already tempted to. It seems like it'd be sentimental. Gives me On Golden Pond vibes...

Worth noting, I haven't even watched On Golden Pond either, just reminiscing on the theme https://youtu.be/8iI-rIQmn-Q?si=x7040oAOnddf9RrN&t=71

Yes, it's an amazing movie. I think it's the best movie of 1999, and that says A LOT, considering the insane competition.
