One of the strangest movies ever made

BvS legitimately feels like a fever dream, a strange self-indulgent arthouse flick masquerading as a big budget superhero blockbuster. How the frick did this get made?

This film gave me so much hope and optimism. Snyder was saving cinema. Its tragic how it became compromised and worn down into goyslop slurry. BVS was like a glimpse into another universe where things were beautiful. The last time I felt the warmth of the dying light was in the Snydercut. Now all I can do is embrace death.

There was the idea of Superman turning evil after losing Lois (as teased in the Knightmare sequences) but Superman is neither Jesus nor the devil. He has the capacity for both great good and great evil, to go to heaven or be condemned to hell.

Joseph Campbell's The Hero's Journey, which Zack Snyder takes great inspiration from.
                >"All the gods, all the heavens, all the hells are within you."
The battle between good and evil is internal just as much as it is external. Men make the choice to do the right thing. And in Bruce's case, he chooses to turn back to the light and redeem himself after being willfully blind in his rage for most of the movie.

Lmfao you're getting memed into watching it. I'd say it's even worse if you don't like capeshit. It's all the trappings of capeshit but with a self-serious tone instead of the equally shitty self-deprecating tone.

Unironically you'd be better off watching Man of Steel and/or Snyder Cut of Justice League before watching BvS specifically. BvS is one of the worst films of the last decade.

In the fight between them, why didn't Batman just shoot him with the kryptonite grenade from the start since he knew Superman was predictably arrogant, even so to the point that he had the machine guns aligned in his direction before he ever showed up?

Superman has for a long time been a reflection of the American spirit. During the Cold War era where the line between right and wrong was clearly defined by the Iron Curtain, a Kantian Superman made complete sense. However times change and such a Superman is unfit for the moral complexities of the post -9/11 world and its threats. Should we bomb a hospital full of kids to eliminate a global terrorist threat nesting beneath it? Snyder's movies answer a screeching FRICK YEAAH. He understands that deontologists in paper are in fact rule utilitarians in practice. Lofty ideals are cool but divorced from truths of life. Good cinema speaks truth, and if cinema is a vehicle for truth then Snyder is its Go Mifune.

it's probably because cavill's superman was mostly showing as a brooding autist. the first thing we see reeve's superman do is save a cat from a tree and tell a girl how we all get scared sometimes while the first thing we see cavill's superman is his dad tells him yeah maybe he should've let all those kids in the bus drown

I'm convinced anyone who doesn't get the scenes with Jonathan and Clark was raised by a single mother.

      Anonymous

That's not what he was saying at all. Jonathan was telling Clark about a time when he worked like hell to save his family's farm but those efforts led to the neighbors farm getting washed away instead. This is mirroring the struggles that Clark was going through during the movie, finding it difficult to pick and choose who to save. Clark's powers allow him to hear millions upon millions of people who need help. But for all his power, he's not omnipotent. He can't be everywhere at once and he can't stop time. Every decision he makes to help someone means someone else is being ignored. This weighs greatly on Clark. And the fact that he gets criticized for the good he does manage to do only compound that. Clark feels trapped, suffocated by it. For all his power, Superman is ironically just as human as anyone else.

I honestly don’t understand why people hate the Martha scene so much. Bats had clearly worked himself up into a—rather obviously PTSD induced—spergrage and Supes mentioning his mother’s name sort of snapped him out of it. Being aggressively singleminded and then suddently getting snapped out of it isn’t all that uncommon among people is it?

The weirdest thing is. When I first watched it I left feeling massively underwhelmed. They tried to cram so much into one movie. Only by going back and digging out the diamonds from the coal could I see it's potential. The warehouse scene is one of the best batman scenes ever in cinema and even the battle between batman and superman is a fantastic struggle between two power houses. Another great achievement is the scenes where bruce wayne does his own problem solving. So many movies focus on batman without realizing there's two side to him and bruce wayne gets the door opened with a hello to get clues, whereas batman has to fight his way in. Naturally it's biggest shortcomings were that we really needed a solo batman movie with batfleck to get us used to that style of batman, lex luthor was horribly written, and doomsday should've been saved for another movie entirely.

Batman v Superman is a movie I still think about from time to time. It feels like a meditation on good and evil, and the cruelty borne of man's comprehension of his own powerlessness.

I don't think about The Batman at all. And that's not saying The Batman is a bad movie, but it's not memorable and really worth discussing in any way.

It feels like we're still gonna be discussing the Snyder Trilogy in 10 years, 20 years, maybe even longer.

Absolute visionary. He saw these characters as human beings, not just pop culture icons. His Batman is the most realistically human out of all the live action portrayals. He wasn't afraid to take risks and assblast some "fans" who hold frigid conceptions of these characters.

But he and WB expected these films to be a cinematic universe, and literally everyone was expecting them to adapt the canon characteristics and stories. Instead, we got Elsewolds slop. If you supported this, you also support shitting on the original of any work.

It was clear from the get go that BvS would be heavily based on TDKR, particularly the portrayal of Batman. It was WB who tried to rush into a "cinematic universe", while Snyder was just doing his thing and planned a five movie series.

it's not the killing and brining charters back that's the problem it's the fact that the more slop mcu releases the more it trivializes previous movies, it's literally pointless to watch those flicks

is right. Both The Death of Superman and The Dark Knight Returns are exactly that. Both of which are adapted in BvS. Comic books are pulp stories, and complaining about it is silly.

I give you that those movie are cool great even but there is no point watching them more than once they're an action flicks with no deeper meaning to them unlike Bvs that the more you watch it the more you pic up on there's so much depth to every frame in that film that it's living rent free in my head 7 years later and I can't say the same for any mcu flick I saw them all but I barely can remember anything that's happening in any of them they all blur together and their bland cinematography doesn't help either

Yeah, Snyder clearly made an attempt at saying something here, but it's nested in so many baffling superficial decisions that it feels like an intentional shitpost. It's a 5.5 at most, and the only reason it would get a score that high is because of the production value.
