In Massacord, internationals make up the majority of conversation, and internationals make up ~25% of petje.af donators at a glance (despite petje.af being much more out-of-the-way for the non-Dutch)
I get that the show is targeted exclusively to the Dutch since Massa wanted Ongezellig to be picked up by a studio that would likely do just that, but there was a LOT of lost potential here. Especially now that Ongezellig will most likely only be continued through self-production anyway.

Despite being moronic in the economic, marketing and merchandising department, I can't say I'd fault him too much since I know exactly how it feels trying to put yourself out there making a business out of yourself. The thought of having to do marketing, making negotiations, pumping out content on the daily all the while doing usual money managing bullshit + hiring and managing people for those roles, it's genuinely stressful and only those who are up for the task can manage such a role. I think Massa does know what goes into getting a show off the ground which is why he's currently playing it safe and sticking to his current animation job that pays well enough and is just coasting off of petjeaf donations when he uploads a video once in a blue moon.
tl;dr While Massa is missing every opportunity he can at making a profit for his show and making it a reality, I can understand the stress, hustle and fear that comes with pitching your show up to investors that it'd just be way easier to stick to what you're currently used to (especially as he's had to deal with juggling 2 jobs + zellig at once in the past before).

I'd add the fact that Massadonië (outside the international containment channel), his weekly streams and his core Dutch audience have all kept the spirit of the cozy, like-minded community that sprung up when he started doing small animations and the first deel of Ongezellig's pilot. It's no coincidence that Massa doesn't feel like pushing his work to an international community and doing any kind of networking or merchandising, as all precedent shows he's more than comfortable where he is and has been for the last 6 years or so (after all, the Maya's Sweet 16 thing ended up shipping to a few people in the Dutch speaking sphere)

Right now Ongezellig is not canceled but on hiatus. And I'm nit-picking here but it would technically be a second episode, not season. Ongezellig was paused when the fundraising goal only raised 1800/2500 euros monthly to continue, and the fundraiser has since been cancelled. If there's a big enough surge in popularity (one recently happened, and we're still feeling the wake of it) and fundraising support on Massa's non-ongezellig petje.af page it might be continued. Right now Massa is just working on the history project though, which should be out relatively soon.
Some Russian TikTok account made an Ongezellig edit in October that got millions of views, and the view counts on each of the deels continues to climb relatively quickly today.

If you're talking about Ongezellig specifically there are puns here and there that get lost in translation, but as the other anon said, you'll mostly miss the cultural references. As for the rest of Massa's catalogue, the cultural aspect is still the biggest issue, but there's more that gets lost in translation. In Massacord, internationals make up the majority of conversation, and internationals make up ~25% of petje.af donators at a glance (despite petje.af being much more out-of-the-way for the non-Dutch)
I get that the show is targeted exclusively to the Dutch since Massa wanted Ongezellig to be picked up by a studio that would likely do just that, but there was a LOT of lost potential here. Especially now that Ongezellig will most likely only be continued through self-production anyway.

It is worth nothing that there has been Ongezellig merchandise previously, being physical copies of Maya's Sweet 16, but that was in 2018 and the extent of it to my knowledge.

Despite being moronic in the economic, marketing and merchandising department, I can't say I'd fault him too much since I know exactly how it feels trying to put yourself out there making a business out of yourself. The thought of having to do marketing, making negotiations, pumping out content on the daily all the while doing usual money managing bullshit + hiring and managing people for those roles, it's genuinely stressful and only those who are up for the task can manage such a role. I think Massa does know what goes into getting a show off the ground which is why he's currently playing it safe and sticking to his current animation job that pays well enough and is just coasting off of petjeaf donations when he uploads a video once in a blue moon.
tl;dr While Massa is missing every opportunity he can at making a profit for his show and making it a reality, I can understand the stress, hustle and fear that comes with pitching your show up to investors that it'd just be way easier to stick to what you're currently used to (especially as he's had to deal with juggling 2 jobs + zellig at once in the past before).
I'd add the fact that Massadonië (outside the international containment channel), his weekly streams and his core Dutch audience have all kept the spirit of the cozy, like-minded community that sprung up when he started doing small animations and the first deel of Ongezellig's pilot. It's no coincidence that Massa doesn't feel like pushing his work to an international community and doing any kind of networking or merchandising, as all precedent shows he's more than comfortable where he is and has been for the last 6 years or so (after all, the Maya's Sweet 16 thing ended up shipping to a few people in the Dutch speaking sphere)

Right now Ongezellig is not canceled but on hiatus. And I'm nit-picking here but it would technically be a second episode, not season. Ongezellig was paused when the fundraising goal only raised 1800/2500 euros monthly to continue, and the fundraiser has since been cancelled. If there's a big enough surge in popularity (one recently happened, and we're still feeling the wake of it) and fundraising support on Massa's non-ongezellig petje.af page it might be continued. Right now Massa is just working on the history project though, which should be out relatively soon.
