Pretty safe and formulaic kino honestly. Compared to many other things I've seen that are obsessed with subverting expectations or which suffer from MILLENNIAL WRITING this movie was an honest breath of fresh air. Couple the quality with the mass appeal and this couldn't have been anything other than a success. Biggest gripe is just the music, why the FRICK am I hearing generic 80s slop instead of yaknow, MARIO music? Is there a free soundtrack builder that just has ACDC in it?
I can appreciate that fact but it still feels so so stupid and cliche for Mario to load up in the kart and have A-ha's "Take On Me" start up as he takes off on Rainbow Road. Let it be there for the parents, I guess, but are there really people out there who took their kids to this movie and just glumly sat through the first 30 minutes but perked up and started punching air as soon as Bon Scott started growling out the lyrics to the most reused song in history?
>what were they thinking?
Probably something along the lines of "we got the effeminate numales covered with the mario theme, now let's get the boomers as well"
the movie was a generic nostalgiab8 cashgrab that had woke bullshit crammed into it like HECKIN EMPOWERED WHAMEN aka princess peach's movie character not even remotely resembling her actual character.
By today's standard it wasn't woke at all. If it was then Mario would have achieved nothing and Peach, the real main character, wouldn't have given a shit about him and defeated Bowser all by herself.
>by the standard of today
Isn't that aknowledging that woke is a moving target? Like how are we sure it's not related to the film's box office?
I kid you not people are now arguing spider verse isn't actually woke. I'm not even kidding look at the mention and replies on this tweet:

This movie isn't really woke. The closest you can get to woke her is Peach, maybe, but really she's just got at running that obstacle course which is fine because it doesn't really deviate from her character in game. I guess people could try and gig them on Luigi being the damsel but again, it's not entirely out of character. It was probably a smarter move to have Peach be the #2 for this film anyway, she's much more popular. Mario still has a complete character arc.
I hated Girlboss Peach with a PASSION, but I was able to look beyond that shit and I'm guessing lots of other people did too which explains why the movie made a shitload of money.

B-but Shapiro told me it was woke, thus it was going to bomb?

Who should I trust? People that feel the need to backpedel or people who still didn't know it was going to be a success???

Finally watched this. Going in with low standards I was blown away by how bad it was. They might as well have just shown a Let's Play of any Mario game because this movie got by on the IP reputation alone. Horrible plot, awful dialogue, nonsensical character development, and jokes that sounded like they were written by ai.

I will answer this because my son asked the same exact question. The answer is that Mario was made in the 80s. So its for the parents.

it worked on focus groups, such is life
There was orchestral music but it got replaced, look up "drivin' me bananas" on YouTube. That's what they replaced with "take on me".
Jesus tap-dancing Christ what were they thinking?

>Cinemaphileirginshit
>post-2012 media
hard pass
white chuddy movie despite the girlboss
mad as frick
>hugely popular franchise that has never gotten a proper movie before makes a billion dollars
Gee, I wonder why.
Wholesome nostalgia good animation clean with no woke crap
>no woke crap
Peach was insufferable
I hated Girlboss Peach with a PASSION, but I was able to look beyond that shit and I'm guessing lots of other people did too which explains why the movie made a shitload of money.

>What went right?
I don't care what people think about her being written. She can shove her ass in my face and girlboss me around
based
so this is why everyone went to see it 5+ times
i can see the little boys asking for more time with peach
she's an actual white instead of an american
You just know that when the American execs were meeting with the Japanese they asked if they could make Peach a fat black woman with an afro.
Why do you care how much money it makes? Fricking Nintendrones, go back to Cinemaphile
It’s solid pulpy entertainment. You know, the shit that people actually want to watch.
