canceling people, taking a moronic pointless moral stand without actually doing anything, making everything cynical and layered in irony, all the moronic quipping, and self-infantalizing with childish hobbies/tastes all started with GenX, like it or not. tbh as cringe as this is, it’s just typical coomer wishful thinking. you’re probably right in that part of it is trying to feel validation, but a lot of it is just being able to imagine they could have a shot.
the rest of it is bluster to try to drag down anyone they perceive as fitting the unreachable masculine ideal.
it’s similar to celebrity worship where people circlejerk over some celebrity one day, only to try to tear them down for whatever fault the next. gays will list over some perceived perfectly masculine dude one day, then once it seems like a consensus is into him, try to find faults in his masculinity the next to bring him down to their level.

In an early episode, when Bashir was still an overbearing Bright Young Thing, he sheepishly admits that he lost out on being valedictorian because he screwed up one exam question: he mistook a preganglionic fiber for a postganglionic nerve. It was just meant as technobabble filler to serve the point that Bashir, despite being intelligent, had self-confidence issues, as that episode was him meeting up with the woman who was valedictorian instead of him.

However, the wife of one of the show's writers was a doctor. She watched the episode when it aired, and commented to her husband that not even an idiot would mistake a preganglionic fiber for a postganglionic nerve. They're completely different things. (Because, remember, the episode's writer was just treating real world medical terms as technobabble.)

This got brought up in the writer's room, and they felt any viewer with medical knowledge would think either 1) Bashir was lying, or 2) the show's writers were idiots.

This led to them - in a later episode - have Bashir admit to this evil hallucination in his head (long story) that he intentionally got the question wrong, because he didn't want to be valedictorian. He knew perfectly well what a preganglionic fiber was.

This, however, raised a lingering question that the second episode didn't answer. Why did Bashir NOT want to be valedictorian? Did he have something to hide? If so, what was it?

That question bounced around the writing room for a while, and eventually it got fed into the idea of him being genetically engineered. The writer's loved the idea that they had accidentally created (and solved) a long-running arc.

(Incidentally, Alexander Siddig HATED the revelation that Bashir was genetically engineered, because he hadn't been playing the character as someone harboring a dark, shameful secret. He disliked that they hadn't planned ahead when it came to giving Bashir this huge backstory element.)

I actually kind of liked the trajectory he was on when they made him genetically engineered, and he seemed to be drifting further away from people and becoming lonelier with time, compared to how he was a popular ladies man early seasons. But then they had to go and swerve at the last minute and give him a girl at the end anyway because everyone had to have a happy ending of course. did they ever explain why odo couldn't just visit kira from time to time? or why he couldn't just live out a humanoid life with her then rejoin the link? really stupid ending for those two.

Tear jerkers aren't designed to be thought of beyond basic logic.
I forget if there was an anime or a game or something where the ending was everyone 'can never see each other again' because they're from different planets.
Second you're done feeling sad about it, you start realizing they have a fricking space ship and can entirely plan a day or a week every year to go hang out but that's not sappy.

Odo losing all interest in Kira the moment she bangs him is a very realistic portrayal of oneitus.

Garak was very obviously supposed to be gay (or at least bi) but Bashir was just a campy straight guy. That being said by the 24th century I can imagine modern standards of orientation don't much apply once aliens start coming into the mix

      >Garak was very obviously supposed to be gay (or at least bi) but Bashir was just a campy straight guy.
I think this was just Andy Robinson adding a little bit of that into the character just to make him a little more interesting/deceptive - also maybe he felt real gay attraction to Siddig irl and it became an aspect of his performance.

      >I can imagine modern standards of orientation don't much apply
depends on what you mean by modern standards, but in the future they've definitely cured homosexuality and transgenderism which is why they don't appear in the human race in TNG onward. And as such all of the alien interactions are still based on our concept of heteronormativity, e.g. every alien riker fricks is what humans would view as a female with desirable human female qualities. the only queers in star trek were things like symbiote-carrying trill, who are basically just addled from several lifetimes of being in both male and female hosts.

A lot of the main cast in DS9 is uninteresting - Sisko, Sisko son's, both Dax's, Kira, Bashir are all shit. Odo's interesting before he becomes a simp for Kira. O'Brien and Worf are interesting but, they are not even DS9 original characters. Garack, Dukat and Quark are amongst the best characters.

The titular station itself is boring. That's why they were forced to introduce the Defiant later on. Trek is 50% hero ship, 50% characters. That's what been missing since Voy and DS9 ended.

I'm so glad they changed this. I loved DS9, but the Avery Brooks "muh racism" crap really hurt the show (yes, Star Trek is all YOUR black imagination including every show before yours! I can NOT believe the writers wanted to shove that shit into the finale!). Jadzia's Klingaboo attitude was obnoxious. Quark was great, Ferengi & Dominion episodes were great, Dukat & Weyoun were the MVP's. I would have missed out on the greatness because the homosexualry was already getting bad.

The character of Julian Subatoi Bashir, MD, portrayed by British-Sudanese actor Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abdurrahman Mohammed Ahmed Abdel Karim El Mahdi, was never intended to be a homosexual.

Fun trivia: He's the nephew of famed british actor Malcolm McDowell, and he also was also married to Nana Visitor (Kira Nerys) for the last 2 seasons of the show.

DS9 is SUCH a waste. It has so many good characters, but the plot for ages is bogged around the shitty space station. If they had the same cast, and they were bopping around the tsars it'd be 10x better. Gul Dukat keeps showing up as usual because.

my shitty headcanon is that sometime after the eugenics war, some kind of vaccine for homosexual tendency was developed and is standard neonatal care for federation citizens.
The only time you ever see homosexualry (I haven't watched anything past ENT so this is likely defunct by post Picard shit) is in the mirrorverse, like incredibly dykish mirror Kira who rides mirror Jadzia's face and tries to selfrape real Kira the whole episode. Even in original series the goateed crew comes off zestier.
I just enjoy pretending there's an actual reason for the goatee universe having gays and normal Trek having no gays.

isn't the point of divergence between the 2 universes much later than the eugenics wars?

I think so, but wherever the point of divergence is irrelevant to the development of a gay-ccine if the gayccine is post-divergence but pre-plot.

      >giving a Klingon head
They make it painfully obvious that her sexual fantasy is run-of-the mill Jane Austinwank and she has foppish Mr. Darcy types eating her out under a petticoat after grinding through weeks of will-they-won't-they tsundere bullshit.
This came up in multiple episodes and I'm annoyed that you don't remember.
Because Janeway's nuts she'd probably just murder whoever saw her having holodeck sex and then shoot 'em out an airlock.
