the top south korean LoL pro-player is literally a celebrity
who was so good at the game that he was granted an exemption from mandatory military service, something usually only reserved for olympic athletes

if you earned that, you would tell everyone

Blizzard couldn't even keep the backstory straight over a few shorts, they'd rather die than make an actual story that advances the plot.

Blizzard decided after the cancellation of the First Strike Graphic Novel to stop giving a shit about the lore out of fear that they would box themselves in creatively.

Because despite appearances, Blizzard isn't actually a very wealthy company. Or, rather, it isn't financially healthy. Their profits are vacuumed up by Activision, which then spreads that wealth mostly to its CEO and marketing teams, and the actual creatives get treated like trash. When Blizzard initially wanted to make an MMO with a huge cross-media campaign, Activision execs smiled, nodded, and then proceeded to whittle that down to a TF2/DOTA style FPS now known as a "hero shooter" while the cross-media campaign was handled entirely by marketing.

Overwatch's setting has been further hampered by what may as well be called "the RWBY problem", where worldbuilding prioritizes various social issues over meat and potatoes. Countries and factions in Overwatch don't fight over territory or resources or ideology, they fight over generic "rights" that are vaguely defined and mostly explained in shots of a bunch of mean people beating up a robot like it's fricking Matrix Revolutions. It being "woke" isn't the problem, it's just incredibly lazy worldbuilding that ultimately creates a setting that's wide as an ocean and shallow as a puddle. Talon are built up to be this huge supervillain threat, but really they're just clowns who wouldn't even be C tier villains in a Batman story.

It's amazing how much better the world of Overwatch works as an animated series or comic series than it does as an FPS.
Or at least it's amazing how hard Blizzard DROPPED THE FRICKING BALL to make it feel like that.

I think it's just because they didn't actually do shit, it's all hook no story. It's like fighting games, they're good at introducing a sandbox and toys but they want YOU to play with them not make a story or anything with them because they know they risk alienating some of the kids in the sandbox by actually commiting to personalities and storylines. People say they want Overwatch to do something with its story and characters but every time they elaborate the tiniest bit everyones like "my head canon was better." and they're usually right too.

But some of the biggest fighting games like Tekken, Mortal Kombat, BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, and hell even Street Fighter have story lines, if anything I'd just argue that fighting games plots are less intrusive compared Overwatch. If anything the problem is how they released the content rather than the content themselves.

          Anonymous

The content is all neat ideas that go nowhere. It's like a ball of concepts congealed into a ball that gives the appearance of a bigger story. In actuality, nothing is there under the hood. Blizz doesn't give a shit, they canned single player story, and the biggest chance to expand on things.
At least they had hot designs for the characters.

Cause their "characters" are just pretty dolls that make puns based on their gimmick. They have no charisma, are devoid of any substance, and their shorts are all there is t9 them. Remember when people were zaying that Reaper was fricked because of Mercy? Well, now there's another evil scientist that did it to him, instead of the Angel b***h. Overwatch is trash beyond gameplay

Yeah that’s a good take and choice of example. It seemed early on that the characters and setting may have had more going on underneath those beautiful glossy 3D animated eyes than what we were given from their trailers and the brief animated vignettes that accompanied events and so on. But over time through a combination of inaction and perhaps a lack of vision and ambition the world of Overwatch began to stagnate and melt into the vast swirling pool of generic superhero sci-fi diarrhea that has become the hallmark of late 2010s media properties.

            (Cont.)
It’s a simple idea but connecting the origins of Dr. Angela Ziegler (Mercy) and Gabriel Reyes (Reaper) through the former’s failure to save her friend is both narratively efficient and poignant. Mercy’s core characterization is that she sees herself as a miracle worker, hence the Angelic trope surrounding the character. She saved Genji from death (something which at the time caused him considerable distress) why not have her attempt the same with Reyes? Only this time her ambition and literal God complex are punished making Gabriel (name of an Angel, pottery perhaps) a mutated monstrosity, the Reaper. It’s a simple and effective story that is familiar but has some twists for the audience.

You could play her as a genuinely caring and morally sound person who can’t get over how bad they blemished the image of the person they wanted to be. Haunted by the fact that no matter how many people she saves there’s still someone out there who hates her more than she could possibly imagine and the path of evil he has set himself on and the abilities that enable it are at their very genesis her own doing. Perhaps she’s lost faith in herself and her ability to truly do good in the world.

You can keep Moira too, in fact maybe she had to turn to her for help to stabilize Gabriel’s condition and now Moira has taken the lessons learned from that endeavor to “improve” on Angela’s design now we’ve given our hero a dramatic foil that plays into her sense of morality.

See all we can derive from one narrative choice that was likely abandoned some point later on? We’ve entered this world after many these characters are passed their years of fresh faced idealism. They’re good people but they’ve made mistakes and now they can put things back together. So it shouldn’t feel like OW2 is starting from square OW1.

            That’s all for today… go away now…

Overwatch fanfiction can be pretty good, my favorite is this one where Widowmaker and Reaper are vampires and Tracer becomes one after dying and Mercy not being there to rez her. Mercy's reviving has the consequence of turning ya into a vampire if she isn't there to revive ya.

To say nothing of narrative people don't seem to understand that Blizzard's cinematics look as good as they do because they're treated like events that come out sparsely and thus can have a LOT of time and effort and money put into them
An Overwatch/Warcraft/whateverthefrick series would look significantly worse because to get that quality for a feature length picture would be a bankrupting endeavor
Same as Dreamworks pushing out CGI animated shows that are always a noticeable downgrade in model and animation quality. You can't keep up that theatrical level at the series scale unless you have and are willing to burn frickshit loads of money

BECAUSE BLIZZARD IS RUN BY RETAREDS. That's it, you really think the freaks who stole breast milk from fridges and wasted development time on shit no one cared about would realize that making an animated series could be lucrative?

Mental illness. Blizzard completely insane for not using their cutscene team to make at least one motion picture. They hired some random hollywood d-listers to make a fricking live action movie, but they refuse to make an animated movie. They are fricking stupid people.

Same reason they make any decision. Money.

Animation costs money and has a lot less return than battlepasses. Better to reskin and recolor existing assets and take advantage of FOMO by putting it in the battlepass or something.

Thottery is the only thing they got that can grab eyes. They saw League of Legends KDA do well, and decided to rip that shit off. Something that could actually move the plot forwards, or at least pretend to? Frick that, take this derivative slop instead, please roll for lootbox skin ty ty

3D animated series take time to produce. Plus, OW1 was never about taking its lore seriously. And their world-building for 2 sucked so badly that they decided to just embrace the trope of "video game characters being video game characters".
