I thought literally about everyone got them when they were 16. How are you supposed to function without a car?

most people in US get them when they are 16, you do driving under supervision of an adult when you're 15. If you can't drive by 18 it's unironically over for you.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have a drivers license personally, and if I I found out someone didn’t got one until
after they were 18 I would think it was weird. I just don’t get how it happens. Your main form of I.D. is your driver’s license, so even if you don’t drive you’d still need one

I've never had one and I'm 31. My girlfriend is 27 and doesn't have one either. We bike everywhere. Have our own place. make almost 6 figures combined and we couldn't be happier. I know I'm probably an edge case, but I just never wanted to drive. Started biking everywhere when I was young and never saw a reason to get invested in the whole "car culture." I think part of what did it was the whole axiom that "driving is a privilege, not a right" so it opens you up to all sorts of government intrusion along the way. We're doing pretty well, though. My girlfriend and I did a 100 mile ride last weekend. Saw a movie, got ice cream... She's the first person I've met who's been as into it as me, but for that I'm blessed, I guess.

How did you get a loan for your house if neither of you have I.D. I doubt the legitimacy of some of these people claiming to not have one you gotta be trolling here. From my understanding licenses were pretty much a non negotiable, they’re more fundamental than even a high school diploma

You get a government Id from the dmv that looks almost exactly like a drivers license but without having to take any tests. You just need your I-9 paperwork. It still takes like six hours of standing around, but its the same process, basically, and its good for everything a license is good for.

Ah, I figured there must’ve been something like that. Where I live it’s not a centralized enough area to have public transport so literally everyone I know has their license, and I never heard of anyone going that route before

depends on your state, some are, you'll have your car towed and have someone pick you up and you'll get a ticket for driving without a valid license. you'll have to appear in court and explain. It's pretty serious....

Not really. Got my first license a few months ago at 29, haven't needed it before but I got pulled over going 99 in a 75 in a car with no registration or insurance and without a license. The cop was realy jittery about it but since I fixed all those things in like 2 months following I'd only needed to pay about 300$ in tickets. As long as you're not a Black person, you're respectful to cops and you aren't hurting anyone they won't nail you to a wall too hard for not playing into America's automotive pyramid scheme.

Yes, I drive. And I cannot fathom the amount of driverless cope going on in this thread. Their lives are penned within the range of public transport + walking distance. I guess camping is out of the question. Or visiting a friend/family out in rural bumfrick. Or going on a road trip with the boys. Miserable existence.

I have a driver's licence but I don't have a car so I never use it. Camping is not out of the question, it's a 2 hour bike drive from where I live. Road trip with the boys is not out of the question either as some of them have a car. I'm not miserable at all, in fact I saved a huge amount of money by just not getting a car yet.

If you go to the bank and get a loan, you need to show them your driver’s license. Hell, can you even register a business without at least photocopying your I.D. or something? I don’t know, but if you get hired some place, I think you need an I.D. and social security. You homies are playing if you’re saying you don’t have licenses

I do have a licence. I just find it amusing how my uncle did so well for himself and never got a licence. His best man even made fun of him at his wedding for failing the driving test 6 times.

Huh. Well come to think of it, there’s maybe some alternate kind of I.D. form you can fill out and get then if you don’t get your license. He must’ve done that because I don’t you can just show your birth certificate to prove your identity. But honestly if someone doesn’t have their license they aren’t a loser, I would think they’re living off the grid and a ghost

Lotta dumb gays itt trying to trick you into thinking not having a DL is weird just because they got scammed as teens same as their parents. Just get a state issued ID and you'll be fine. You have to jump through a thousand gay hoops to get a license as a teen when you can just drive a car anyways and not get caught. Worry about it when you want to get a job driving.

I can assure that no one actually genuinely gives a single frick about whether or not you have a license. If you live in a place where you can publicly transport everywhere and walk to work, and you never need to drive, then you don’t really need one. Although in most places in America even in a lot of major cities you can’t really get by without a car so it will seem to most people if they find out you don’t have one. They’ll assume (probably rightfully so) you’re kind of a weirdo and wonder how you were getting by and never decided to get one

So you’re going to drive in a car that isn’t registered to you, with no insurance, and without a license, and just pray you never get pulled over for any mild reason or get into a fender bender, huh. Doesn’t make a lot of sense, you’d be better off getting your license if you want to drive

That’s moronic, if you’re going to buy a car you should at least register it to yourself and you need a license for that. And you never know when there’s going to be a speed trap or you get rear ended or pulled over by a cop for pretty much no reason

There was a capacity limit in my high school's driver's ed course and I didn't make it in. My parents would come home from work around 7 pm so there wasn't much time for driving practice. I ended up getting a job that was a 45 second walk away from a bus stop, so I just stopped caring about driving.

Guess that makes sense. There’s not even enough bus stops to get around where I live. You’d never be able to travel outside of like a 5 minute driving distance of where you live unless you want to walk an hour or bike down grass or street lanes

Plenty of people have treated me like a weirdo when they found out I didn't have a license, all of them around my age (millennial). Older people don't seem to care and half of zoomers don't have one either.

Well if you discount poverty stricken and ghetto people, and illegal immigrants, I can’t actually imagine many people without a license. Maybe it’s different in major cities like New York where they have subways. Pretty much everyone I know just got signed up for driver’s ed, only someone with absent parents would’ve not bothered to do that, or at least make sure they get a license. It could be because I live in a sparsely populated and sprawling city, though
