I actually generally liked this series, but it should have stayed it's own contained thing instead of the absolute clusterfrick that Secret Empire became.
You can't believe for a second that cube Cap wasn't a retcon from their original plan to have this be the excuse to retire/kill off Steve again for Captain Falcon.

The first issue hinted at Cap's brain being fricked with and the second issue confirmed it. The end game was literally never "ok we make red skull make cap a nazi and then he's gone forever".
They were trying to ride the MCU wave and so had 616 Cap with variations of the Ultimate costume since Marvel Now. It didn't work out and they eventually gave him his classic costume at the end of Secret Empire
