>"Paul betrayed her in many ways," he said about the betrayal of Chani.

>"Paul betrayed her in many ways," he said about the betrayal of Chani. "But the big thing for Chani is that it’s not about love. It’s about the fact that he becomes the figure that will keep the Fremen in their mental jail. A leader that is not there to free the Fremen, but to control them. That’s the tragedy of all tragedies. Like the Michael Corleone of sci-fi, he becomes what he wanted to avoid. And he will try to find a way to save his soul in the third part."

>That’s partially what happens in Herbert’s 1969 sequel Dune Messiah, but expect Villeneuve’s adaptation to veer off-course from that book in several ways, particularly when it comes to Chani and her anger toward Paul. "That anger is tremendous," Villeneuve said. "I don’t want to reveal what I’m going to do with the third movie. I know exactly what to do. I’m writing it right now. But there’s a lot of firepower there and I’m very excited about that decision."

Leto is born with full future sight as a newborn, like an isekai. Already a full6 developed brain. He sees all paths and takes the one that saves humanity: gently oppressing it as a god-like figure, allowing himself to get assassinated while stockpiling spice, and making humanity explode outward into the universe to populate everywhere so humanity can never be wholly extincted or controlled again. Also his great great great ancestors he crossbreed with his twin sister cannot be oracled/seen with future sight for some reason, so they're eternal wildcards in the universe.

Ultimately Herbert shits the bed with books 6 & 7 as too many moving parts are introduced and his son belly flops the series where every major character from dune 1 & come back as gholas to defeat the machine menace, fix Arrakis and the sandworm population and collect their fanfic happy endings/just desserts if they're bad guys. Vladimir Harkonnen comes back to life with his memories and all TWICE, just so the good guys can win even harder.

does chani even do anything in dune messiah besides fail to get pregnant, get pregnant and then die? In the new villenueve version its instead shes le angry, eventually gets pregnant and then dies. Chani was always one of my least favorite and interesting characters in the books and she still is in villenueves tryhard take

    >That’s partially what happens in Herbert’s 1969 sequel Dune Messiah
homie thats literally the opposite of what happens in Messiah. Paul didn't "keep the Fremen in their mental jail", he fricking allowed them to assrape the Imperium and they turned into lazy degenerates who only larp as fremen but have none of their grit and spirituality, similar fate to Sardaukars before them. Fricking moronic cucknadian homosexual Black person.

      >allowed then to assrape the imperium
you mean by feeding their delusions and letting them do whatever they want under his name and not ever attempting to tell them the truth about the prophecy? that's keeping them in their mental jail you fricking moron

        Anonymous

It's the opposite moron, Paul is a figurehead, if he is not the messiah they kill him or they will Jihad anyway that's what Dune Messiah says
        >You can’t stop a mental epidemic. It leaps from person to person across parsecs. It’s overwhelmingly contagious. It strikes at the unprotected side, in the place where we lodge the fragments of other such plagues. Who can stop such a thing? Muad’dib hasn’t the antidote. The thing has roots in chaos. Can orders reach there?

Paul gave them that power, paul fed their delusions, he is not the "figurehead", he literally caused this by affirming their beliefs which made everything spiral out of control, he DID keep them in their mental jail and that's what doomed everything

            Anonymous

Jihad was impossible to stop regardless of Paul's actions
            >Here was the unborn jihad, he knew. Here was the race consciousness that he had known once as his own terrible purpose. Here was reason enough for a Kwisatz Haderach or a Lisan al-Gaib or even the halting schemes of the Bene Gesserit. The race of humans had felt its own dormancy, sensed itself grown stale and knew now only the need to experience turmoil in which the genes would mingle and the strong new mixtures survive. All humans were alive as an unconscious single organism in this moment, experiencing a kind of sexual heat that could override any barrier.
            >And Paul saw how futile were any efforts of his to change any smallest bit of this. He had thought to oppose the jihad within himself, but the jihad would be. His legions would rage out from Arrakis even without him. They needed only the legend he already had become. He had shown them the way, given them mastery even over the Guild which must have the spice to exist.

              Anonymous

the jihad was impossible to stop AFTER he made the choice, not before
              >they needed only the legend he already had become
again, feeding their delusions is what caused this, if the point of the story was "lol he can't do anything about it anyway" then why the frick does it exist? the entire point of Dune Messiah is so Frank can hammer the message he failed to deliver in the first book which is that Paul isn't the good guy, he used a vulnerable and desperate group to fill his veild desire for revenge and power.

Chani represents the idea that the freman should fight for their own freedom instead of waiting for a messiah which is in line with the "dangers of charismatic leaders" the first book tried to send

What was the better alternative that Paul could have gone with? Would doing things Chani's way have brought about a better ending?

                Anonymous

we don't know, paul only saw glimpses of the future but chose to avoid the ones where he, chani or his mother get hurt or die, he did however know that every outcome with thr freman will result in a jihad but still went along with it anyway for selfish reasons

                Anonymous

So the best timeline would be Paul and Jessica seeking refuge with the Guild. Harkonnen occupy arrakis. The Baron continues his schemes. Maybe gets Feyd wed off to Irulan, maybe not. Either way, status quo is maintained. Eventually the Bene Gesserit get their QH and then all bets are off.

There was no perfect ending he could have chosen, but he refused to do the Golden Path because he was a flawed little b***h that couldn't do what needed to be done for the greater good, so his son did it for him. Paul is fricked into a bad situation, but he fails to take the optimal path because of what it costs him, so he suffers and dies anyways. Which is undone when he comes back as a ghola 5000 years later anyways

                Anonymous

Again moron, Paul was only accepted in the fremen because he MIGHT be the messiah, Kynes believed that. In fact in the book they were already had a plan, Kynes plan to terraform arrakis, Paul or not, the religion just united them. Fremen in the movie and in the book have no chance without Paul. Which makes zendayaChani even more of an activist c**t, she screams that Paul is le bad without offering a single alternative of survival.

                Anonymous

Worse still, in the book, Chani is Kyne's daughter and by taking her as his woman, Paul symbolically assumes the legacy of Liet as long term guide of the Fremen. I think it was even Chani who teaches Paul about the secrets of the Spice Cycle, which he later uses to blackmail the Guild. This all makes Chani *instrumental* to the success of Paul's ambitions.

In Dunc, Chani is just... some girl. She's never connected to Liet Kynes. She never teaches Paul more than the basics of fremen life. She is *superfluous* to his success, and is a scowling DOG of a woman to boot.

I suppose his alternative was to either
            >refuse to step into the role of the Mahdi, and just stay Muad'dib the fighter. The fremen remain disparate, ununited. Eventually, the Harkonnen hunt them down. Maybe Paul uses his atomics. either way, the fremen Eventually get wiped out (but they die as atheists, so i guess they die free).
            >Paul steps into the Mahdi role, wins per the movie, but then explains the truth, or steps back out. The fremen become leaderless and sooner or later get rolled by outside forces. They die bitter and confused.

Doesn't chani die during childbirth while bearing Paul twins? One of those twins becomes an even worse version of Paul.

And anyway, why is chani even sour about Paul "becoming who he is" for the Fremen? He's "pretending" to be their Mahdi, but where's the lie, exactly? He led them to the liberation of their world. He's going to bring Liet Kyne's terraforming project to fruition and make the world green. How would Chani prefer things to be? Sure, lots of nonbelievers are going to die, but that's not Chani's hangup, it's Paul's. Chani seems bothered by the Fremen believing in a prophecy (that comes true), because it enslaves them, but I've yet to see the slavemaster named? Are they simply "enslaved" to the abstract notion of religious fervor? Why is that bad for them if it gives them everything it promises? Is Villeneuve just a sourpuss redditor fedora atheist?

Wow, great. Chani can come back and spin around like a Devil May Cry guy and kill Paul for upholding the h*ckin patriarchy and then Zendaya can make that fricking monkey face at the camera. What an absolute assraping of one of the most important characters in the books.

Chani in the books: Loves Paul no matter what. Simultaneously realistic and unrealistic, for a woman.

Chani in the movies: Realistically pissed that the Paul she loved is dead and gone and fosters literally everything wrong with sandBlack folk in real life.
