    weren't there cigarettes in this movie? What did they make them out of if paper is so scarce? Why not just use a pipe?

      That's a good point I'd never considered. Maybe it was low grade paper made from seaweed? I think they were probably all old as hell though, since they couldn't grow tobacco, and the paper and the cigarettes were probably pretty shitty at that point.

        Tobacco ages like wine if stored correctly. I don't know about all the added chemicals of commercial cigarettes, they might break down and ruin the tobacco.
