not exactly the weakest but i've always had a gripe with Wormy.

the whole plot hangs around the fact that Spongebob doesn't know what a butterfly is. which doesn't exactly work when what Spongebob does and doesn't know about the surface constantly changes (also it's sister episode "Patty Hype" had an opening shot where a spider crawls around the Krusty Krab cash register)

so when i was a wee little lad, i didn't view it as spongebob percieving an alien concept. i saw it as spongebob being a moron on the caliber A Pal for Gary.

I'm of the minority but I don't think there is a single bad episode in the first 3 seasons. Even Party Pooper Pants, I'm with Stupid, and some other ones people want to say are bad have plenty of great hilarious moments in them, and are nowhere near as mean spirited as the later seasons are. The characters are just messing with each other intentionally, not evilly or moronicly like later on.

It's weird that I sometimes forget that Missing Identity even exists. Not because it's bad, but because it was an episode that, for some reason, wasn't aired as often as the others. In fact, I think it was the very last s3 episode I ever saw after the movie released.

    >People always talk about the best episodes of the first three seasons, but I want to know what you think is the weakest episodes of those seasons.
    my thoughts on the weakest episodes of each of the first three seasons;

    >Season 1
I'd say either Boating School or Squeaky Boots, though even those episodes are still pretty good

    >Season 2
probably either Dumped or Procrastination, though again I wouldn't really call either episode bad

    >Season 3
this one has more in the way of episodes that aren't particularly great; SpongeGuard on Duty, As Seen on TV, Party Pooper Pants, Krabby Land, Missing Identity, and The Sponge Who Could Fly

going over these choices I'd say it's a tie between As Seen on TV and Missing Identity for weakest episode of the first three seasons, both episodes just feel off and are lacking in good jokes

      Anonymous

Squeaky Boots is a Telltale Heart pastiche, so I can give it a pass for that. Most of the boating school episodes aren't very good, though, and most of why people like them are the climaxes and resolutions.

The half hour specials of the first three seasons weren't good.
The lost episode was terrible, the house party one is slow and boring, they didn't know how to format the show into longer time intervals then.
The specials became better once the show started otherwise falling off.

Season 3 is where you can see the start of why Spongebob fell off.
Seasons 2 and especially 1 feel more like family shows like the Flintstones or other sit-coms then it does a standard kids' cartoon. The pace is slower, it's not too loud. It takes the tone and humor style of a more all-ages show, but uses the cartoon format and weird Dadaist sensibilities to craft a show which uniquely appeals to most age groups.
Later seasons lost that all-ages appeal because they became generic kids shows, using bright colors, screaming, and obnoxious humor to appeal to just kids rather then a broader audience.

And that change is seen in season 3, it's far louder, far more absurd, more built around things kids would find funny then others.

There's something about Season 1 in particular I enjoy. It has an easy going feel to it that I really enjoy. The way it looks too really clicks with me.

My theory for season 3 being more zany than 1 and 2, is mainly the idea that the showrunners at the time assumed that after S3 and the movie, there'd be no more new SpongeBob, and thus they started pushing the envelope for what kind of plots and jokes they could try without completely losing that SpongeBob feel, so to speak.
Of course, that ended up backfiring when the show continued after the movie, because now they had pretty much fast-forwarded into the kind of dilemma that a longer-running show like the Simpsons had fallen into at this point. The zanier tone of S3 combined with the major change of hands production-wise meant that the new people running the show only had a vague understanding of how SpongeBob as a show works, and soon they would double down on ridiculous plots and perceived character traits.
TL;DR SpongeBob as a show suffered from the staff playing their royal flush so soon (because they assumed the first movie would be the end), and even now the show hasn't been able to recover fully.

          That seems pretty likely.
Also, the team were probably already beginning to run out of some of the more jokes and stories based on real situations and lived experiences and decided then to shift to more standard kids cartoon fare as the well ran dry.

Agreed, never understood why most people think season 3 is the best

I think a lot more people love childish humor than we believe.
So the change to more loud and outlandish gags and plots was enjoyed by those people.

I always heard people say Season 2 was the best.
But my and my personal friends liked season 1 usually.

Party Pooper Pants is a standout for me, that episode is just surprisingly dull and really doesn't have any jokes that hit.

Gonna add, I've heard that towards the back end of season 3 the writers were very heavily involved in the movie, and that being split between the production of that along with the later episodes probably made them suffer. I agree that season 3 in general felt like they were almost getting the wildest ideas out that they could, it's far more energetic and absurd than the previous two. Shit, Nasty Patty even feels like a "Can we get away with an episode this dark?" kind of thing.

I've never heard season 3 cited as the best, it's always season 2 just for Band Geeks alone. In fact going through the list of episodes now season 2 is insanely fricking solid. Gotta give it to season 3 for Chocolate with Nuts, Krusty Krab Training Video and Wet Painters though, those episodes are hysterical.

Anyone else think the SpongeBob Movie sort of sucks? The movie seemed to be the birth of "new" SpongeBob. Spongebob's voice is more higher-pitched; his character is different - in seasons 1-3 he is an immature adult, in the movie he is a "kid". They even drive this point home by showing him having baby toys in his bedroom, and him screaming and crying a lot more than he did in most of the older episodes. Squidward and Sandy are the best parts of the show, and they are barely in it. Huge missed opportunity to have him travel with the other two. I also find the entire King Neptune thing uncessesary and it detracts from using a more established character. Mindy was just there to get a celebrity voice actor and she added nothing. And while I find the SpongeBob getting drunk on ice cream thing to be funny, the Goofy Goober shit is just way too childish (even for a kids show) and gets annoying.

Yes. All the characters were off model and it was very noticeable even as a kid.

It’s not super great but the ending is a fitting conclusion to SpongeBob’s story.

        >Squidward delivering a long monologue on how adulthood isn’t responsibilities and jobs but is about having confidence and respect for yourself on the inside
        >>”No, I just wanted to tell you your fly is down. This is the greatest day of my life!”

The movie had extremely heavy executive meddling and it's known that Squidward and Sandy's diminished roles were because the suits at Nick thought that a wider audience would prefer the child-like naivete of Spongebob and Patrick. I wouldn't be surprised if they expressly asked to make them even more childish. Even as a kid I thought it was weird that Spongebob went from basically being a loveable guy with a childlike heart to acting like an actual child, he was always portrayed as an adult before then.

Well TV show movies need to be a bit different then their shows. They tell an isolated story, and so change elements to have the show fit that narrative.

Spongebob in the cartoon obviously isn't designed with any character arc, since it's not a serialized show.
But, the main character in a movie needs to have a character arc.

And so, they played up the childishness of Spongebob and Patrick as to give them an arc across the movie, and to play in to the overall theme and moral of the movie - that it's alright to be a child at heart.

It's especially jarring since the first scene in the movie is LITERALLY spongebob acting as the cool, calm, collected adult of a situation. He feels perfectly in-character for that one scene and then it's like they took 20 years off of his life.

Yes, but it's still Spongebob actually acting like he would have in the show. It feels weird to turn that into a fantasy and then have him acting like a child when that sequence is what you'd expect from him in the actual series.
