The director is the one to blame. Never directed anything before, and people who worked at Dreamworks have stated that she was one of the least talented members of the company.
I'll never forget what a half-assed/phoned-in screenplay and storyline this film has.

Disney meanwhile killed off their animation department, bought up a ton of IPs they didn't create, managed to ruin them all including Star Wars which was an automatic money printer until 2012, ruined Marvel, ruined Jim Henson's works, ruined a chunk of Fox's IPs they bought...even their own original stuff is also being actively ruined. All they didn't ruin yet is Aliens and Predator...YET.

It's sad how this low budget Disney film made relatively quickly has more heart/wholesomeness than a good bunch of Dreamworks films, all of which had bigger budgets and were longer in development.
