Comic book dream time. Couple years in the military, early 20s, becomes Captain Marvel, does that for a few years, eventually she and Kamala fall in love and begin physically expressing their affections on the pages of Marvel comics. Nobody is ever old unless they were always old.

You're applying definite measures of time to a medium that just doesn't have them. Carol and every other hero is perpetually young. Some are "veteran" young in their 30s, most are in their 20s, Kamala is 16 and ready for an experienced hand like Carol's to guide her. But they're not 40. They’ve already established Carol is one of the if not older superheroines. In canon, she’s already 10 years older than Wanda and Jean Grey. As said on panel in the comics themselves.
