    Writer-driven cartoons lack soul

THIS. Ren & Stimpy is a cartoonists’ cartoon, not a writers’ cartoon. It isn’t The Simpsons or Bojack Horseman.

Unfortunately, the cartoon pipeline process doesn't really do live board pitches anymore and often just has people submitting quicktimes of their storyboards to supervisors with story meetings instead. As a result, cartoonists don't get to hone their comedy skills with a live audience-- so even if the new R&S was board-driven I don't think it would be funnier.

Ren and Stimpy was mostly a failure anyway.

It was a massively overbudget fricking mess that got John K fired before the first season was finished, was mired in scandal during it's initial run, with most of it's press being complaints from organizations and parents. Then the 2004 reboot was a fricking disaster. And absolutely none of it's imitators were even remotely successful.

He's right. This reboot sucks balls even compared to Adult Party Cartoon. The leaked episode doesn't feel like R&S, it makes APC and the Games seasons look amazing. It's a soulless imitation that doesn't understand the original show.

I'm okay with script-driven cartoons, they can co-exist with board-driven ones. The problem is that no modern writer can write a decent joke to save their lives, they all fall for the same pitfalls and have a similar style.

I agree with that. Script-driven R&S is just wrong though.

I think script driven can work if your cartoon is heavily story driven
But it doesn't work for zany/wacky cartoons that live and die on visual gags

    >On August 5, 2020, it was announced that a new Ren & Stimpy reboot has been greenlit by Comedy Central, along with Daria and Beavis and Butt-Head. Though a new creative staff has been employed, Billy West was expected to return along with a few of the original series' writers. Due to the sexual abuse allegations surrounding him, it had been confirmed that Kricfalusi will not be involved in the production of the new reboot nor will he receive any compensation from it. Originally set to be produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio, production on the reboot has been moved to Awesome Inc in October 2021, while Snipple Animation announced their involvement in September 2022. According to West, development was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, contrary to earlier rumors that the project had been cancelled. Paramount Global (at the time operating as ViacomCBS), the parent company of Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, has not responded to requests for a comment about the status of the show, though West reiterated that it was still in production. On September 14, 2021, West confirmed that he was reprising his roles as Ren and Stimpy. Billy West, the original voice of Stimpy (and the 2nd voice of Ren for the majority of the original series) is expected to return to the revival, along with several of the original writers. Scandal-plagued series creator, John Kricfalusi, has been confirmed to not be involved with the production of the reboot due to the 2018 BuzzFeed allegations accusing him. People who worked on the original are also returning such as Bob Jaques, Chris Sauve and former Spümcø alumni Robyn Byrd, who despite working on the reboot, previously tried to get the reboot cancelled under the guise of it potentially leading John K to "lure young people to his studio".[1] However, Robyn Bryd was later shown to retract these claims, as after she started working on the reboot and was getting revenue from it, she closed the petition. This is show's production is very interesting.
      >First got announced in August 2020 along with Daria and B&BH reboots
      >A month later the person who was going to end up working on it said it got shelved despite that being a false rumor
      >Excerpt says there's suppose to be some original "writers" returning but there's barely anyone recognizable here
      >It's rumored that Bob Camp was on the project but later backed off due to creative differences
      >This project suffered massive delays due to COVID-19
      >Season 1 was done around late 2022/2023 according to Byrd's LinkedIn
      >Season 2 is most likely going to be finished by this year so Paramount can release this shit in batches like how streaming networks always do
      >Byrd's LinkedIn page says she's actively working on it
I know it's MTV handling this project but I wouldn't be surprised if it does end up in streaming first. Still it blows my mind that this has been in development since the 2020 elections and these sparse are the only glimmer we see of it. Cartoons being stuck in limbo nowadays is just so tiresome.

I'm trying to remember what Kelly Armstrong was good at. Most people say she's the one carrying the load, which is REALLY sad.

Instead of letting a diverse team of men and woman work together on a silly cartoon show about some dumb guys, they end up making one girl do all the work and then they give her all the credit, because they didn't want to listen to the experienced artists who did it right the 1st time.

      >The production values are superb for a 21st century cartoon, though.
Yeah, I was shocked how good the art direction was. Obviously there's some tweens around and the animation itself was never going to be as good as the original, but many of the keyposes are great and there are moments of solid animation. Compare that to the Looney Tunes or Animanics reboot that was plagued with really stilted moments and some of the worst use of tweening you've ever seen. There were also times in the Animaniacs reboot where they would OVER-animate some of the follow-through animation, like their ears or Wakko's hat, and it would just be bad looking. The reboot had really good visual direction for its obvious limitations.

Although, it's possible this is just a testament to how good their simple designs are where even on a smaller budget with a less experienced team, they can still make them look good. It probably helps they stuck close to the original designs and have multiple seasons worth of poses from veteran cartoonists they can reference. Although, I guess they had that with Looney Tunes and Animaniacs, so I'm not sure what the main difference is.

        Anonymous

        >like their ears or Wakko's hat,
I totally know what you're talking about. Where they were told what animating on 1s or 2s is considered "good" but it's more nuanced then that but they didn't have the experience to know when to animate something and when to cut their losses and just reuse frames appropriately. Making a BIG deal about Smears is a mistake when the smears are held onto longer than key frames.

NuR&S actually does it better, and feels like the best way you can have strong designs and tween when needed. Also the line width is really good, and the colors look alright. It's miles better animated than Numaniacs is and is more appealing.

Still writer driven cartoons and all... still garbage.

The sheer irony of this reboot is then up and coming storyboard Amir Avni took drawing advice from John K in 2007 and is now the storyboard artist for this project. He even made a short called "The Barley Way" in 2011 that took clear inspiration from John K artstyle and tone. Imagine taking advice your idol, creating a short as a tribute to his craft, and then getting to finally get to work on the project that kickstarted your career only to be relegated as a storyboard artist (in modern time lol) and get barked order by homies who have zilch experience with animation let alone actual drawing, everything your idol despises in the medium. Pretty much sums up the modern animation industry in a nutshell.

A shit ton of industry people were followers of John K's blog back in the day. Sugar, Dana, and Ian JQ are three notable ones.

I think some people here who never browsed the blog at its peak underestimate what a magnet it was for cartoonists at the time. It was THE website to visit if you were interested in animation at all. Pretty much anyone seriously considering animation as a career followed his blog.
