unfortunately, John has an incredible weakness to the plot. If he does nearly anything he is going to be down for an episode.
That's as manufactured a situation as Batman's omnipotence, and for the same reason, to prop up the most popular character's usefulness.
There are entire JLU plots that the Manhunter could resolve solo, he's stupid-age Superman without the nerfing.
So he's reduced to simply showing up and looking alien, talking really slow, and participating in group melees.
Manhunters problems was always that he was SO powerful, they had to nerf him to make everyone else useful. Or they would show him getting his ass beat to show how strong a villain was. In the end it just makes J'onn look like a wimp.

Technically Doomsday was himself a victim of Cadmus. Ideally perhaps there was a possibility that they could have mucked about in his brain and turned off his irrational Superman hatred, I suppose. But since they could just yank him out of the PZ whenever desired, I agree that Bruce's consternation is a bit forced. Maybe it was the finality of it all that got to him.
That's implying the Justice League would want to pull anyone out. It's about how they can just send criminals to the phantom zone. What if they send Luthor there? What about Joker?
