Corporations lobby endlessly for ever stricter IP laws to the point where pretty much all intellectual and artistic works made in the last century are now gatekept from the commons. Sometimes there's literally no legal way to access them, movies, books, records, video games not found on Netflix, Steam, Spotify.
Unless you live in America legal media is bound to be obscenely expensive, blurays, videogames, books, you can't build a decent library sticking to strictly legal media.
The Founding Fathers created some of the first IP laws in the world (IP is a historically recent phenomenon) but some of them had their reservations about them. Originally a work was only bound to IP laws for the first 15 years after its creation; now thanks for corporate lobbying it's 70 years after death of author which effectively means a whole century. So that Disney, Microsoft, Monsanto, Pfizer can hoard IPs over texts and songs and seeds and molecules at the expense of humanity.
