Lightning in a bottle. It was the right thing at the right time for the early '90s. It wasn't even the best animation on MTV when it came out. More than half of the cartoons on Liquid Television mogged the hell out of it. Like anon said, you just had to be there. It struck a chord.

I kind of agree. Out of all of Judge's works I think Beavis & Butthead is the one most dependent on the culture surrounding it at the time. Much of his humor depends on relatability as a factor; you know, finding in his characters the sort of people you have to deal with in real life. The Beavis and Butthead archetypes just aren't really around anymore, nor are many of the minor characters in their school, etc. On top of this, the idea of lampooning videos in real time is no longer even remotely novel. You have to remember that, before guys like James Rolfe and Doug Walker, there was no outlet for this sort of content outside of what, MST3K? And they pretty much only did stuff that was already known to be bad.

I liked the new movie well enough, but watching the series just made me realize that people don't interact with the world in the same way anymore. It really was a better time.

      >they pretty much only did stuff that was already known to be bad
Not true. If it had kick-ass guitars, fire, explosions, hot chicks, etc. they'd sincerely enjoy it. Beavis and Butt-Head only mocked music that sucked.

      Anonymous

I saw that stuff in the early 2000s when I was 15-16 and I'm German, what the frick is there not to get? I'm no expert on American culture but most of the stuff gets around the world anyway at some point.

Dumbass teenagers calling everything they don't like moronic is a pretty universal experience in the developed world. It's just Mike Judge was smart enough to see the comedy potential in it and OP was dumb enough to get filtered.

        >dumb guys stopped existing in the early 90s
Awful reading of the post. If you seriously think the "dumb" of the 90's/00's is anything like the "dumb" of contemporary society, you've been living under a rock. People are 20 IQ points lower now and it's celebrated rather than mocked.

I'll explain, OP. The show is completely irreverent toward almost everything. They don't care about school, work, parents, morality, bleeding heart hippies, conservative hardasses, anything... they just want to get laid and break shit. There's no social or political message other than that boring people who want you to care about their boring ideas suck. It's a frick you to everyone who wants to make you care about their boring crap. Yet the two protagonists are not complete, irredeemable buttholes. When they're cruel it's more because they're too stupid not to be cruel than out of any maliciousness, so they don't come off as utterly disgusting. It's free-spiritedness in nearly pure form.

What is funny about B&B is more just the straight characters around them, and how they don't recognize that B&B are completely moronic, and treat them like they are anything but complete wastes of space. They always give them the benefit of the doubt and it always comes back to bite them in their ass.

Its like leaving your kid with a dog who has rabies, trusting beavis and butthead to do anything but jerk off and break stuff is really on you.

one of my favorite episodes is when they knock over the modern art installation, destroying it, and then right after the teacher comes over and says "see this? everything was deliberately placed, you can tell how much work the artist put into this, everything is exactly where it needs to be"

TV was different back then. Not everyone had cable.
Liberal was a nightly news anchor, TGIF, your school teacher.
Married with Children was about as subversive as it got.
Passing around VHS tapes was something perverts did.

You heard about shows by people laughing about it, and didn't know what was going on.
You would flipped through the channels to discover shows. The local paper would send you a TV guide on Sunday, but it didn't list MTV.
Changing the channels would be super noisy. You would see static, and a big "CHAAAAAHEEESH".
Suddenly this would be on, and it was like finding an Easter Egg.
