This minus Little Britain, always came across as cringe to me.
From OP's pic, Peep show is good, Colour of Magic / any of the discworld's are good but not really comedy, more just comical setting.
Well for starters it's Irish not British lad. So if you're an American you're going to have an even tougher time getting it. Best to watch some British stuff to get the vibe and accent before you move on to Ireland.
"Father Ted is a sitcom created by Irish writers Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews and produced by British production company Hat Trick Productions for British television channel Channel 4."

I've seen a couple of the big ones like Red Dwarf and Mitchell and Webb. This British Youtube guy I like likes it too, so I think I'll finally give it a shot.
I'm a Red Dwarf guy myself, but I can see why modern audiences would be put off by it, especially Americans. It's low budget, but not intentionally camp, and it plays a lot of cliches straight. It asks a bit from the audience, but it's not a "serious" enough show to be worth the effort it wants.
>this made british gen X piss their pants with laughter

It's not the objectively funniest, but it's good shit. If you want your comedy darker, go for things by Chris Morris. The Day Today, Brass Eye, Jam, Four Lions.
Approach The Day Today and Brass Eye with the forewarning that they're satirising news programs of the day, and while the presentation style they use may not seem that wacky today, it was extrapolated from what was seen as crass back then. Also, a lot of his stuff started as radio comedy.
Peepshow is probably the funniest TV show of all time
Archer pre-dream shit was funnier but Peep Show is close
Merlin? I thought it was a pre-teen fantasy show
Teen fantasy show yeah
Still funnier than most American comedies
I can believe that
Monkey Dust should be on there too btw

I've been meaning to try Father Ted for awhile now. Are there any British-isms or anything I need to be aware of before I try to get into it?

Australia is just the east's UK
they're New Zealand's 4th most popular folk duo, not Aussie
Garth Merenghis Dark Place is the best comedy show ever, period
