Hinterkaifeck, while gruesome and sadistic I don’t find as much a mystery. Given the details, it makes sense that it was somebody who was close to them, either a family member, or family friend. Just cause no motive was discovered, I’d argue that’s just attributable to the poor investigative practices of the era. They were clearly very personal murders and many of the victims were lured to the barn, makes sense it was maybe a scorned lover, exiled family member, or something of the sort.

Failing hard evidence to answer the question, people will construct narratives to justify the man's beating. Honestly, I'm pretty sure that Kremers fell down the drop pictured and was mortally wounded but alive long enough to call out to call out and possibly dial emergency services at 4pm April 1st. Froon made her way down the slope more carefully, snapping flash photographs for light (this was before phone OSes had an inbuilt flashlight function) until she eventually found Kremers' body which the hair in the photos was of. Froon uses her phone most of the next day as well as Kremers once (they were probably dyke lovers so it's not too much of a stretch to assume they knew eachothers PINs). Froon then switches to Kremers phone for rescue calls on the third day because her own is low on battery. Then suffering from exposure she loses coherence, checking Kremers phone for any signs of rescue before then succumbing to lack of fresh water. The whole speculation with bone conditions was probably just incompetence on the Panamanian's part.

Not sure how long they were missing for but it'll take at least a week in the jungle for someone to die of exposure. That is, unless they were woefully unprepared and succumbed to hypothermia. If they died within a week then it was most likely murder. I just finished reading The Jungle is Neutral and basically anyone with the most basic outdoorsman skills can last a month in the jungle. I watched a lot of Podcasts about this case and the senior detective on the case says he knows who did it, but the suspected person is dead. The identity was given to him by someone in the criminal world who he has many dealings with. For some reason the detective will not give a name, even though he's dead. I think there's a couple of reasons why.

The way I look at it, there's two options why he would not reveal the name. The least likely option, he was a celebrity/well known person or as you said government connections and releasing the name even though he's dead would cause this detective grief. The more likely scenario is that the suspect was dealt "street justice" by some criminals who knew who it was. To name the suspect might be naming a missing person and therefore the Police would have to investigate this and charge some people who actually did the right thing by the community.

Well that's a possibility too. Cops do say that, "we know the suspect, but we don't have enough evidence to charge him" a lot. Who knows.

If she is dead then she died seconds before this picture was taken, I do notice that her pupils are extremely dilated, which does happen when someone dies, but then almost immediately due to the lack of blood pressure the body's eyes begin to "sink down" and look flat. Anon, the majority of National Park disappearances are Greenhorn hikers pushing beyond their limits and paying the price.
