i think the crew would kill the tourists to preserve oxygen and then eat them for sustenance. not like the world would miss someone willing to pay 250k to go to the bottom of the ocean in a glorified play place tube

why is it so hard to find the sub? doesn't it just drop straight down to where the Titanic is?

      Anonymous

yeah did they even try to look around the titanic?

      Anonymous

apparently the titanic wreckage itself is incredibly hard to find, even with exact coordinates. They'll often search for hours before resurfacing without finding it. It's 12,500 ft deep in pitch black waters. Now imagine trying to find a missing submersible in that kind of environment, it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. Even if they find it, it could take a very long time

You clearly dont understand. The window would have failed halfway down to the bottom if that were the case, which the guys up would have been able to detect.

Its not some movie effect where they make it to the bottom and then suspenseful music plays and then the window fails under the pressure

The window was rated to 1300 meters. That doesn't mean that the moment they hit 1301 the window immediately implodes you absolute autist.

Better yet, just because it was only rated for 1.3 km doesn't mean it couldn't have served well enough for the expected X dives to 2 km. Some organisations do leave way too large safety margins. Which is exactly what someone sane would want for a vessel that is meant to go that deep, sure, but it's beside the point.

this was not their first dive you idiot, they've been doing this for at least a year. If the window wasn't strong enough they would've exploded the first time they went down.

You mean the hull that, instead of a solid sphere like others for that depth, is a tube with hemispheres bolted to the end of it? A design that, at that depth, makes 0 fricking sense from a safety/longevity perspective? Yeah, I'm sure it's still intact.

          >After Lochridge issued his inspection report, OceanGate officials convened a meeting on January 19, 2018, with the CEO, human resources director, engineering director, Lochridge, and the operations director. Per the complaint:
          >At the meeting Lochridge discovered why he had been denied access to the viewport information from the Engineering department—the viewport at the forward of the submersible was only built to a certified pressure of 1,300 meters, although OceanGate intended to take passengers down to depths of 4,000 meters. Lochridge learned that the viewport manufacturer would only certify to a depth of 1,300 meters due to experimental design of the viewport supplied by OceanGate, which was out of the Pressure Vessels for Human Occupancy (“PVHO”) standards. OceanGate refused to pay for the manufacturer to build a viewport that would meet the required depth of 4,000 meters.

Any engineerchads in here? Why carbon fibre for the hull tube? My limited experience with the stuff gave me the impression that while stiff, it cracks and splinters if you compress it off the long axis of the fibres. You can pressurise the inside fine because the fibres have good tensile strength, but outside pressure doesn’t make use of that at all. Also it seems to get repetitive stress fatigue around fastening points, so it seems like an odd choice to bolt steel end caps onto it. I’m only dealt with a maximum of 4 layers of weave so these effects might not be relevant at this level.

      Anonymous

Yea I have already been commenting in this thread. It does not splinter and crack under pressure, as carbon fiber is one of the most tightly compressed synthetics in the world. The steel caps were used to fuse an outer layer over the hull to prevent debris from damaging the main hull, this really is elementary shit anon

The implosion happens so quickly and violently that it literally causes an explosion of the air, like the inside of a diesel cylinder firing. Any mechanism on board or attached would have been destroyed before it could even calculate something was wrong.

Reality is that fail safes would only be alerting the surface of an unsalvageable situation to begin with. There are only 2 possibilities: 1) they are alive but not recoverable because there are very few crafts that can actually go to such depths and none of them can help surface the submersible, 2) they imploded
