I want to say the escape convict was stripped of his humanity. That asylum back then lack any actual cognitive therapy and were essentially loop house of disgusting places people who didn't want to be delt with were thrown in to rot.

From the sounds of it he was already messed up. Depending on how long he stayed there it probably would’ve made him worse.

At first I imagine him as a pirate. That got caught but then in trail couldn't speak English therefore couldn't give any testimony.

But his tattoo is in English. There is an off chance he got a tattoo that look bad ass and didn't actually care what it said, like white people and Japanese tattoos.

Why do I have the feeling the black goo is behind all this somehow

I think it’s more likely that it’s just a part of Primal’s world. Rather than being the cause for some of the stuff that goes down. Though who knows maybe it’ll be revealed that the black goo is related to the Scorpion King somehow.

There's no examples of any humans, mentally ill or not, who behave like he did. This guy was just cartoonishly evil for the sake of being evil. Attributing environmental causes to his actions is just a flimsy headcanon. He's easily the worse antagonist of any episode because he has no character outside of being a bad guy.

          >Witness Garnet Caton said the attacker seemed oblivious to others when the stabbing occurred, adding he was struck by Li's calm demeanour. "There was no rage or anything. He was like a robot, stabbing the guy," he said. When he appeared in a Portage la Prairie courthouse on charges of second-degree murder, the only words Li reportedly uttered were pleas for someone to kill him.

That's nothing like how the inmate behaved. And Vince Li was a software engineer and is now living completely independently.

And cavemen and Dinosaurs didn't coexist in real life either, anon. The inmate was just a big moron who liked to kill things. He even had a tatoo spelling it out. There's not much point in dwelling on whether he was a realistic portrayal of a crazy killed. I'm pretty sure Charles' theory wasn't quite scientifically accurate either yet it is proven in the episode.

That convict was like any modern serial killer. No regard for human life and had the perverse habit of eating human flesh, not unlike some notable real maniacs. The only exaggeration is that he's some giant brute who barehand brutalizes his victims like an animal instead of being a subtle and lowkey manipulator who isolates victims and murders them discreetly like most real serial killers.

There have been giant men in the past there used to be some 10 ft tall guy that did ads like 90 years ago they had to make everything for him custom now that guy was known as a gentle giant apparently but imagine if he was the kind of kid who liked to kill animals he could have killed both his parents as a child and no one would have known jack shit cause it was in the old days then he could just keep on killing could you imagine someone telling you they saw a giant murdering some people they’d think you were fricking crazy and the victims couldn’t fight back unless they had a gun ready cause you wouldn’t have time to grab it or load it once a guy with 10 ft legs starts running at you as fast as he can with his arms stretched out ready to kill

Latest episode was fricking incredible. Came out of nowhere and absolutely sucked me in. Had me more on the edge of my seat than any other episode so far and I love how the themes fall into place with the main story.

He was likely the product of some terribly fricked circumstances and became a violent serial killer as a result. I like how he set up to be this parallel to Spear, a savage, physically and aesthetically. Maybe even also genetically. But at the end of the day the professor who fought him was the one who truly emulated Spear, fighting tooth and nail, stripped to the most simple violent instincts and weaponry just to survive. I think it goes to show that the group was wrong about what really defines humanity and what the threshold for savagery is. Spear is comparitively as rational and empathetic as any modern person and he fights violently out of necessity. I see his humanity as completely intact. Just like the professor. The inmate however is a true psychopath and outright savage. This episode was a real fricking suckerpunch of kino.

I opened the thread and saw this image before I watching the episode or the trailer, and at first I thought Gendy had parodied Obelix (because of the color of his pants) with a psychotic Viking with strength similar to Spear's, but when I noticed the English tattoo I thought the episode was set in a more modern era and the character was a prisoner (because the windows in the background look like bars) fighting to the death in a clandestine coliseum until he became "primal", indicating that Spear's killer instinct is hereditary or at least obtainable under extreme circumstances. I'm disappointed that it was neither.

How? After all the incredible character and emotion filled episodes, how are people saying that Primal Theory is the best this series has ever been? I thought it was a good episode, but it’s nowhere near the high points Primal has been to.

More like it's a gothic horror atory told straight. The setting, the cliche "escape mental patient"

It's almost like I could see a bunch of English boys in a school children in a boarding school telling it to a younger grade, and ending it it with "and that house was later converted to this school!" To scare the younger kids before bed.

Ok so I got the theme of the episode, so don’t try to pull the “you just didn’t get it” shit on me.

It’s fricking moronic that some of you think this beats out the likes of Coven of the damned, rage of the ape men, plague of madness, shadow of fate and red mist for the best in the series. It felt like a generic slasher movie. No character, no emotion, just raw violence.

I feel like this wasted an episode slot. We only have 19 twenty minute episodes with spear and fang now because of Genndy wanting to do an anthology so badly. If this were like a bonus episode on top of the 10 for this season I would be fine with it, but this takes away a slot from a story and characters that I love and that pisses me off.

And don’t get me started on how everyone hyped this up as the massive game changing twist. “Origin of man” my ass.

If this is what primal is going to be from season 3 onwards then just count me out.

if you didn't like primal theory then you didn't like primal until dawn of man. this "generic episode" kept all of the series' season 1 style with the exception of talking, which in my opinion didn't break style too much cause there was no exposition in the dialog. it was the good ol' shit happens, the end style that drew everyone watching this series in from the beginning and that season one feel is what makes this episode best in the season. i just miss primal is all

It was building the whole time but seeing Charles almost die was the final straw and this Primal TM mindset can result in great feats as we saw with Darwington saving Charles proving part of Charles theory but not all of it we do not know if any man could turn into the madman or if he just has sweet gain genes

Just watched the new episode. It felt pretty average. The premise was neat but the middle parts where they keep shooting guns and missing over and over and over again dragged it down, and the action was too stiff a lot of the time. Most of it was like watching a fight scene in a TV-G action cartoon by how many times they missed or just stood around.

Same, maybe I’m just underwhelmed after the absolute kino that was Red Mist, but I’m shocked so many people seem to think it’s the best of the entire series.

Personally, I'd air this as episode 10. Complete Spear and Fang's story in 9 episodes and when people wonder what the last episode will even be surprise them with a kinda-sorta promise of a spin-off. The themes of the Victorian episode and the final "And there you have it!" would also serve as a nice bookend for the show.

The escaped convict stands around around too much and allows them to hit him.
Similar to how the viking village should have taken out Spear and Fang, the convict should have taken out the club members in no time.

yeah a dinosaur and a man somehow getting stabbed and slashed at the legs thousands of times somehow kill an entire village, and even fetuses straight from the womb came out to fight them, meaning they had to kill them as well. After hours of being hit by hundreds of arrows and the dinosaur having its leg tendons severed multiple time, they finally trudged onto a boat and escaped. Best Episode EVAR

Most of the shit that happened to them happened before the mist. We see spears stuck in Fang clear as day, and then they disappear. I could suspend my disbelief if they showed them with more bloody holes and scratches, but they showed them as unfricked as they were before they fought in some shots.

You want the psycho to be grounded in reality when the purpose of his character is to be an absolute savage threatening the lives of civilized people. He does not need further characterization. He is a force of nature.

          Anonymous

Yeah, I do want that. Being a savage doesn't just mean killing for the sake of killing. It means killing for survival, just like what Spear always does. It's a betrayal to the themes of the show to just suddenly associate savagery with unprovoked, unjustified violence. They may have well just replaced every instance of the word savage with evil. The psycho was just a generic boogeyman. Even the turtle from the first episode this season was a more compelling antagonist.

Charles' theory was that man could return to a primal state if faced with a prime evil force. The savage was the prime evil force, not the primal man. To convey this he had a giant tatoo that spells out death. He is a force of nature, divorced from man. He isn't like spear, Darlington is.

          >He isn't like spear, Darlington is.
Anon you mean to tell me the character who kills because he's forced to and is literally shown using a spear is meant to replicate our former hero, Spear, whom we last saw drenched in a bloodbath where it can be argued he lost control and went from killing out of necessity to killing out of sheer lust?

What is this, you expect me to read themes and parallels in the writing of a cartoon?

          Anonymous

I... Are you really telling me you thought he was saying "Prime Evil" this whole time? Are you actually that brain dead? Charles was saying "Primeval" which just means primitive age. That second morpheme doesn't mean evil, it's from the Latin word "aevus" and also found in the word "medieval." Whenever anyone talked about "medieval times" did you just hear it as "mid-evil" because if so I think you're the dumbest person I've met on this site.

              >After this 10-episode iteration of “Primal,” Tartakovsky revealed for the first time his intention of turning “Primal” into an anthology franchise, embracing other genres in the same minimalist animation style. “The big idea is that ‘Primal’ becomes a brand,” he said. “Visceral, emotional, raw, minimal dialogue, artistic. Clever if on purpose, though I think the idea falls apart when you begin overthinking it.

With its ratings, pretty much zero. On top of that, Discovery has cancelled EVERY show they could this year. Not one thing has been renewed under their leadership.

Pic related also implies Adult Swim as a whole isn’t even in their future plans

Adult Swim as a whole is probably still Cartoon Network isnt it? But yeah given how Adult Swim seems so irrelevant beyond one or two shows this merger could be what kills it since it feels they were already pretty desperate to find a new avenue to find a new audience.

I mean it wasn't the worst thing or anything like that, but that recent episode pretty much has none of the stuff I love about Primal. I like the brutal action and everything, but it doesn't have the crazy out there concepts like giant creatures or swarms of deadly monsters or bear riding vikings to make it fun. And more importantly, I connected with Spear and Fang due to their introductions, not because they fight good. Their characters and world got established and it's one that's a treat to go back to, but this world is just boring in comparison.

It's easily my least favorite episode. Thematic connection and themes about the series just cannot make up for lack of compelling stories and narrative. The "Message" Will never, ever, be as important as the story told on screen, and this story just didn't have any of what made the other episodes great.

I want to see spear and fang get their story wrapped up but this has shown me that primal can probably be pretty great in other settings.

Just watched Primal Theory. It was really good, I fricking liked it a lot. I just don't understand why it's an episode of a show about a caveman and his dinosaur wife going on violent adventures. It seemed more like a stealth pilot for a different show.

So not only has Primal gone full Conan, but also full Howard in general. This episode reminded of a Howard story that had almost the exact same premise; wish I could remember the name of it. It was also about a group of men discussing things like racial memory and the distant past and I would be shocked if Gennedy wasn't directly inspired by this story. The story ends with one of the men plotting to kill another of the group because he could sense he was descended from Serpent Men lol

        >For I come of a royal race, and such as he is a continual insult and a threat, like a serpent underfoot. Mine is a regal race, though now it is become degraded and falls into decay by continual admixture with conquered races. The waves of alien blood have washed my hair black and my skin dark, but I still have the lordly stature and the blue eyes of a royal Aryan.
        >And as my ancestors—as I, Aryara, destroyed the scum that writhed beneath our heels, so shall I, John O'Donnel, exterminate the reptilian thing, the monster bred of the snaky taint that slumbered so long unguessed in clean Saxon veins, the vestigial serpent-things left to taunt the Sons of Aryan. They say the blow I received affected my mind; I know it but opened my eyes. Mine ancient enemy walks often on the moors alone, attracted, though he may not know it, by ancestral urgings. And on one of these lonely walks I shall meet him, and when I meet him, I will break his foul neck with my hands, as I, Aryara, broke the necks of foul night-things in the long, long ago.
        >Then they may take me and break my neck at the end of a rope if they will. I am not blind, if my friends are. And in the sight of the old Aryan god, if not in the blinded eyes of men, I will have kept faith with my tribe.

Beyond based. Also Howard hated the Nazis ironically enough. Lovecraft sent him a letter saying how based the Nazis were and Howard sent him one back calling him a moron in the nicest way possible.

It's 100% this. Genndy said there would be a reveal that people would either hate or love, and the episode was only shocking in that it was basically an intermission. Maybe Spear and Fang aren't of a dying age but they're part of a new one, and it's the world outside of their island that is slowly collapsing.

I thought this episode was weak because I didn’t care for the people involved. With previously established characters it’s easy to feel worried for them, but here we have a bunch of guys we’ve never seen before. So it lacks what I consider the heart of primal, characters the audience cares for.

You can argue it fits the series because a dude goes apeshit at the end, but if that’s all something needs to be primal, what isn’t primal then? You could make it about a fricking comic con trip as long as a guy loses his shit and stabs someone with a stick by that logic.

It’s not bad, but I consider it the weakest of the series

          Anonymous

          That's fair I guess.
Maybe I just get attached to characters and people easily.
I also genuinely didn't know if they could die or not which added some extra tension for me which is hard to get with a longer running show.
I like Primal but at this point in a season, there's never any illusions that Spear or Fang are gonna bite it before something especially climatic.

According to one of the interviews this sounds entirely possible if Primal becoming a "brand" like Genndy wants ever happened. Thankfully I believe it not being extremely popular is going to save it from becoming something stupid, since we're not even done with S2 and Genndy is trying to set his sights into fricking it all up down the line.

This is how I know you've never shot a gun before. For those in the back, firing a gun in REAL LIFE at a moving target is VERY hard. They established at the beginning that they were scientists, not marksman.
      >B-but the animal carcasses
Shooting an animal on a safari isn't that hard. They're usually not moving

        Anonymous

The bullets not hitting kinda bothered me but at the same time none of these guys are gunmen, they're British scholars and scientists who are in a panic, being attacked by a dude that looks to be spear's equal in physicality, though not his intelligence. They're also presumably using guns that I imagine are not in the best condition for shooting, the same goes for the bullets, considering they had them as display pieces almost as decoration.
I don't see why anyone would hate the episode. Could definitely see finding it mediocre or disliking it, but hate is pretty strong.

You can argue whatever logical thing about bullets being hard to hit, but you damn know if at the end the fricking stick gut the madman out and his entrails got out, a fricking bullet would have deprived the episode of any story, that's why they purposely miss, the madman was almost obese type build, you cannot tell me someone would miss that much not even once, heck you could have made it that they hit him in one of the legs to restric his superhuman speed at the very least.

          Anonymous

          >if a bullet hit lethally the episode would have ended early
It also would have ended early if instead of scholars they were all british infantrymen raring for the opportunity to bayonet somebody, what's your point?
          >almost obese type build

That it's dumb none absolutely none of the bullets hit, if you count the one that grazed his skin.

            >has an identical build to spear
So what? Spear is fricking huge, there is no consistency or clue about how fricking big he is in comparison to a fricking dinosaur but in most of the episodes Spear is not that short in comparison to Fang.

              Anonymous

It's not dumb at all you completely ignored what me and the other anon said.
These aren't combatants, they were unprepared, panicked, and armed with museum weapons, shooting at a moving target that was playing mind games with them.
              >So what?
It stands to reason he's similarly capable, especially considering he was leaping around like he was, and Spear goes through average people with ease and dodges quick shit all the time.

                >These aren't combatants, they were unprepared, panicked
and yet there are school shooters every day in America that hit at least a victim even without intention, just by pure chance at least a bullet out of 100 should have hit.

                Anonymous

remember anon, school shooters have access to semi-automatic rifles with magazines that can hold more than 5 rounds
these old boys were fighting with revolvers, bolt and lever guns with very limited amounts of ammunition

                Anonymous

Ok, thanks that you pointed out the difference in armament, why then did two fricking arrows hit but not the bullets? talking about the bow, they are still not combatants, are still afraid and yet you need to pull and maintain enough strength to pierce, and yet with the gun, you have a trigger but one failed and the other was a success.

Also a child or an obese teacher running away from you is different than being hunted by a killer

I guess you are implying that a child is easier to get hit than a killer, which again, a child is smaller in size, you are underrating how fast, agile and nimble they are, if anything that would make them a harder target, and that we also are talking about IRL against fiction, that get this killer superhuman agility and speed. (and the plot armor to skip bullets)

Absolutely fair point, I yet maintain my point, *was clearly a plot armor to show at the end the two fighting like pure beasts* to be reduced to a fight primal fight.

don't use words you don't know the meaning of, their weapons were also semiautomatic. what you really should point out is that hitting things unintentionally works when shooting into a crowd, these guys are firing at 1 constantly moving target and most importantly he's been shown to be dodging, not that they were missing. that's why when they got him it was when he wasn't looking. it's like people just look for reasons to hate

                >it's like people just look for reasons to hate
No, I genuinely defend Gendy about the arrows hitting the gang healing afterward and I clearly pointed the previous thread that they are shown in the last scene bleeding, but this just gets my nerves on, you have a better point than the others but you need to admit this is still fiction and that was clearly a plot armor to show at the end the two fighting like pure beasts. (Which was the whole purpose of the episode and the point of the mocked scientist)

    >The Vikings are shown to be deeply feared by Mira and the other slaves but they aren't much of a threat to Spear and Fang when not in large numbers. This actually has some historical basis as despite the real-life reputation of Vikings being deadly warriors they were realy just raiders and it was mostly their distinct boat designs that allowed them to stealthily travel up coasts or even rivers so they could quickly raid defenseless villages and leave before anyone could respond, when they went up against actual soldiers, they usually faired much worse.

I think the reason a lot of people are disappointed is because of the marketing. If the episode wasn’t hyped up by Genndy and all the marketing around it so mysterious, I think only a few people would be upset.

If the marketing description wasn’t misleading as frick and they just straight up told us what this was going to be like I don’t think most of the people complaining right now would still be complaining.

First they develop immoral acts like marriage instead of the orgy cave.
Then immoral acts like gay marriage.
          Now Dino Human marriage
This isn't a slippery slope it's a god damn waterfall

Easily. He could have probably taken out everyone in the episode with minimal effort.

It depends, in strength, they look kinda similar, but one is from a more advanced era and the other not, the knowledge would give the advantage to the madman.

The whole point of the episode was that it wasn’t until Darlington became primal that he could win

          Anonymous

Hmmm fair enough, in one scene Darlington the box champion (technique) was handling himself quite well, but until the fear and the desperation of that situation control the madman was the moment he knock him out, one could say both knowledge and primal are two sides of the power to survive.

There's a definite sense of allegorical "unreality" to the situation, the escapee being more of a dark manifestation than just a stronk lunatic, since he just Sanic's past any attempt to shoot him but slows enough to be manageable as Darlington himself regresses to bows, fists, and sharpened sticks. Even as a cartoon I don't think you're entirely meant to read it as being realistic at face value

I liked the comedy of the episode but it feels like a really weird place to have it in the season. Didn't like how the killer seemed to be randomly teleporting, I get that it's a thing in slasher movies but it felt awkward in the episode itself and the fight choreography was pretty dull.

not quite sure what to make of it's placement breaking up the story after how hard last week's ep went but overall as a standalone about 8.5/10 arguably a 9 with that final line

Well people have been saying that Genndy has ideas about making this some kind of anthology series, so this is probably an attempt to see if it would work without wasting a whole third season after the Unga Bunga adventures are done with.

this episode felt like Genndy trying to see if he could pull off making Primal into an anthology series like he's said he wants to do in interviews. I'm down for it. last line made me kek

It doesn’t matter if it will work or not, Discovery is gonna axe the show after it ends like they have done for every other AS show in recent months

      Anonymous

It seemed to be an aside to explain the premise of the show, which will be further expanded on next week, about how a man driven into a corner will become an animal.

Viking dudes have been driven into a corner, at least they believe so.

      Anonymous

I think its purpose is twofold. One it obscures the timeline of events with what is essentially an intermission so Spear and Fang recovering and getting tracked down doesnt seem like it happened in an afternoon. Yes the two events don't effect each other in any way but from the audience perspective it breaks things up.
Two I can imagine the theme of regressing to a primal survival state will come into play with the Viking chief and son or more likely with Mira in the next few episodes. Maybe they just came to the conclusion that was a theme they needed to get across and having it in an episode where people speak plain english was the best solution.

Well there's already a theory that this episode is foreshadowing that Spear is actually from the future and humanity has collapsed and gone through some period of de-evolution (or Jurassic Park is real). There's another theory that it's foreshadowing Mira absolutely losing her shit at some point.

Just realized that this opens the door to the possibility everything else in the trailers is completely unrelated. Like the Mesopotamian War shit could be ts own episode.

Mira isn't even that developed as a human that the reverting would make sense. She already killed one of the vikings or something last episode. Her going insane on someone like Darlington did wouldn't feel particularly out of the ordinary considering the times anyway.

I think the other people are onto something. It's the only american animation backed by a big company I can think of that tries to take itself somewhat seriously instead of being a shitcomedy.

Gee sure, let's waste every other fricking episode showing the characters recovering

There were a couple of those in the first season I'm pretty sure.

            Anonymous

The only time we had any focus on recovery was episode 6, following Fang getting her ass beaten by a mutated gorilla in the previous episode. Closest thing we've had since was Spear recovering in episode 12, and even that much faster since it was probably just a day or two at most. The season's only 10 episodes, and since this one was a one-off, we really don't have the time to do recovery arcs after every big battle.

And Fang actually suffered less damage from the Gorilla and Spear had magic bullshit to help heal him in episode 12. Last episode they just had an extra dose of plot armor. No wonder everyone is pissed.

Fang was beaten nearly to death, and Spear had little in the way of any medicinal skill, just rubbing dirt and leaves on the wounds and hoping for the best. Sure, the two got filled with arrows and sliced a lot in the most recent episode, but by the time of next week's episode, it'll have probably been some time since they left with Mira. And stop assuming everyone is mad about the lack of recovery.

I still think this episode should've been connected to the main story somehow. Maybe at the Charles could've revealed he found Spear frozen in a block of ice or something.

Because otherwise this was just a really weird interlude with no justification. Leave season 3 for Victorian scientist adventures.

that would be way too direct and more or less confirm Spears fate. A better callback would be a skull of one of those giant bats with a spear shaped hole through the top or something along those lines. Something where the audience can make the connection between Spear/Fangs actions with preserved physical evidence.

No. Absolutely not. Know what they COULD have done to make it not shit? Started the episode as normal and just have the guys making fun of Darwin. Then have a NORMAL episode where shit gets fricked up and the Viking goes PRIMAL to attack Spear. Then cut back to Darwin telling his friends they're wrong. No escaped madman. No fricking cannibal survival shit. A nice bookended adventure that doesn't conflict with lore, NOR rewrite established IRL HISTORY and forced the viewer to suspend their disbelief JUST TO FRICKING ENJOY IT.

It's easier to believe a caveman having caveman adventures at the dawn of man in a mystical hyperboreal age than it is for Darwin to help fend of a nigh-unstoppable cannibal.

In any case I'm not gonna have an autistic meltdown over disappearing injuries in a Genndy show. If a wound is meant to be truly debilitating, the show will make it clearly such. Otherwise Spear shoulda been in a coma when he bashed into a bunch of rocks dropping off the waterfall in River of Snakes

Visual storytelling is a great idea in general, and he's always had a good eye for it, even back in Samurai Jack days (To the point that maybe that last season would have been better with a lot less talking in general). I'd be interested in seeing what he can do.

honestly think there's a good chance we get season 3, this is like the only show across Cartoon Network/Adult Swim that's actually getting wide acclaim and winning Emmys. lots of fat worth trimming before they get to this if they need to cut costs at the network. plus they already spent money on Genndy's overall deal, so they need to get some use out of him

Got it in one. That said, they do seem interested in quite a few other parts of WB. But AS wasn’t one of the things they cared about so it’s their current target for settling their debt

Honestly if Genndy was testing the waters for an eventual anthology, the feedback is gonna be tainted by the fact he interrupted the middle of the season and pissed everyone off.

If this was a bonus/special episode like the Smiling Friends thing, or a preview of the next season, like the Plague of Madness was originally, after Spear and Fang's story was over. It probably would have gotten people way more hyped.

it should have been a bonus and aired after Spear and Fang's thing, everyone would be like "cool, more" not "wtf is this", though I'm still hesitant as frick.
