It was fun. Certainly didn't expect it, and can only wonder if it'll have any bearing on the overall plot, or just be Genndy doing a "This is what my show's about, in case you didn't understand" for whatever reason.

      Anonymous

Of course it does, the whole point of this is to show you how Humanity and Dinosaurs come together.
The Primal theory is suggesting that in the future the world started over.
To survive humanity evolved to where it could survive in a world that now had magic, dinosaurs again, zombification and creatures that evolve I to something else.

Everyone would be drawn like action figures. Cut the blood.

Mira would have big breasts and hair, her Scorpion tattoo would be on her upper chest like you have to stare at her breasts to see it.

Everything spear and Fang face would be a toy. They're would be variations of spear and fang like wholly mammoth armor spear and fang.

Had this been a few years ago, this episode would have marked the mid season break for the show. Over a year would pass before the next episode would air.

Post your reaction if this episode was the last we saw of Primal until late 2023

      Anonymous

I don’t even think it’s hypothetical, I think this genuinely was meant as a mid season break episode. The Viking dudes suiting up to go after Spear and Fang was the true stop point, so they needed a filler in there. That way when it came back, it’s straight to the battle

that was only because they weren't done with the first season in 2019 yet AS wanted to air them anyway so we got the delay. Genndy probably liked how fricked everyone got over the mid season 1 finale and decided to do it again deliberatly with season 2.

Honestly the split was perfect for that season, unintentional or otherwise
Yeah it sucked waiting for so long but it make the insane hype of the early airing of Plague and eventual Scent of Prey so much more than it would have been otherwise

Maybe Charles is one of Spear’s descendants (or maybe somehow ancestor, if they do a post-apocolyptic devolution/evolution-type think) and that’s hey he had a similar facial structure? Which would be somewhat fitting, in a way, since he’s the only one who (originally) believed in the Primal Theory

Stranger Things had an episode where a character had their own little side adventure that was disconnected from the main plot, people hated it because it came after a climactic ep that ended on a cliffhanger which interrupted the season's flow, the ep's tone and story felt like it came from a totally different show, and just the fact that it had little to do with the actual plot beyond developing the character a bit.

Ever since then the showrunners have pretended that the episode never existed and the show hasn't referenced it again.

Is that even a thing outside of this and the last Cinemaphile thread? I mean I honestly wouldn't mind but I have mixed feelings about it.
Like what are the odds animals would re-evolve to be like our actual prehistoric animals instead of brand new creatures?
Then again I guess there's literally magic and I could sort of see people brought to low tech returning to the ancient cultures that spawned out of their genetics because arguably that culture springs out of a low tech manifestation of their genetics maybe?
                I don't know!
I just take it as an alternate history past thing, I mean, for all we know even the victorian england thing was within the same timeline and they have neanderthals which live alongside of humans into the 1890s and that's why the madman is built like one.
                So much speculation!

I assume Primal is doing the "forgotten history" thing, like yeah there are dinosaurs but stuff like zombie viruses and witches have been completely scrubbed that people never knew they existed in the past.

I think a comination of people who just want to b***h about anything, like even the last episode got some pissy homosexuals despite being great. Then the expectations of this being something important to the overall story being completely dashed by it being a nonsequitor.
It's great but I can see loregays having blueballs so bad that they need to see a urologist.

Did anyone else think Charles was about to be raped when the convict ripped his shirt off?

Yes but I'm almost certain I have a complex and the guy gave me serious Mr.Hyde vibes so I was thinking rape since probably the first encounter.
After a few seconds I was almost certain he'll just eat him or something.

So looks like Spear is fighting Eldar. You think they’ll be able to communicate?

What do you mean by communicate? Literally, of course not. Spear can't even communicate with Mira past her name and spent atleast days with her. At best they'l communicate like Spear does with Fang n that they have a vague understanding of one another.

The episode was a really fun offshoot, the spergs are just pissy because it broke the mold of the show. Same people who got pissed over the Smiling Friends go to Brazil. Sure the asylum patient guy brings up a lot of questions that don't have answers, and the total ineptitude of them trying to fire guns was kinda silly, but by the end it started to feel like it fit in as an episode of Primal, and I think that was the point. Plus it was funny how that Frenchman died in one punch.

That's it, that's probably how this episode ties into the season as a whole. So far Spear has become more "human" from socializing and opening up with other humans like Mira and the scots, caring deeply enough for the former to travel to another land just to rescue her but he might have to ultimately reject all of that at the end when they face off against the horned demon and embrace his inner monke to defeat it.

No. He got knocked out by the headbutt and his glasses shattered on his face. He doesn't make any sounds or movements after that.
Darlington and Charles seemed to think he's probably still alive, though. They don't dare to shoot when the madman uses Blakely's body as a human shield. Charles tries to wake him up until Darlington tells him they've gotta focus on the bad guy.

I think it's possible Giroud might be alive too. He got knocked out by a punch. But Bertie (the old guy with white beard) and Stevens (the butler) got chunks eaten out of them before they were left on the floor with big bleeding wounds, either unconscious or dead.

Ah, okay then. I guess I misremembered.

Also, speaking of the human shield part, I thought that gag went on for just s little too long. Maybe it happening two times should’ve been the right amount, and after the second one, the madman slimes at them like he’s just toying with his prey, then he throws him at them.

But then again, this is Genndy, and Genndy likes his comedy, even in serious stuff.

      >Also it felt like he teleported when he was knocking on the door the busted through the window on the other side wtf was that

Yeah, that did seem too fast. Heh, unless time passed in the show between commercials?

But when that happened, o thought that the reveal was that, the madman had some sort of “primal virus” and it was infecting the people he hit and turned them into savages too, and then it would (somehow) show society falling to this “primal disease” until they went all the way back to the Stone Age, but then the virus eventually worked its way out of their system, and they started evolving at a faster rate, due to some of them, on certain continents, finding old remnants of previous technology and tools, and they “reverse engineered” them into other tools that they could recreate. And then maybe, the “primal virus” was somehow still around, even after leaving most peoples’ systems and them growing immune to it, but it too had evolved (or devolved) and instead of simply being a “primal virus” it had slowly turned itself into that zombie-like plague we see in Plague of Madness. And maybe the black goo that the Ape Men (and Spear) drank was like some sort of concentrated form of the “primal virus” (and maybe the Night Feeder). But since they were already primal themselves, and had some sort of immunity, the effects weren’t permanent. But then the more humanity evolves, the less immunity they have to the normal “primal virus”, and, once the world reaches a certain point, they’ll undoubtedly end up catching the “virus” again and Ho back into their primal states, like some sort of primordial vicious cycle.

It was a good episode especially since it gives us a brief break after the depression that was Red Mist. Frick those Vikings were actual morons but I’d be lying if I didn’t say that the father and son do have a right to try and avenge them.

It wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing either. For some reason, this season just feels meh. I don't know what Genndy could have done better at this point, but I feel that the stories' direction certainly isn't the best it could be, and my gripe has little to do with this episode. Again, not bad, but I think he bit off more than he could chew.

This is ranking is good, although personally I would swap the top two.
Episode 1 is just a run of the mill Primal episode. Spear and Fang against the ocean with some great art. There's no reason why anyone would hate this episode but it's pretty standard for Primal season 1. Episode 2 is my personal favorite. Some people didn't like the introduction of homosexual Sapiens but I thought it was so cool. It was a very tight and emotional story and seeing Bronze-age societies had the same sense of wonder as seeing prehistoric animals in past episodes. Episode 3 was a set up episode and couldn't stand by itself. Episode 4 thus had a lot of pay off, but I felt the pacing was weird. Episode 5 had overly verbose Britbongers fighting a boogeyman. It had nothing I liked about Primal and is easily the worst episode.

so is the moral of the episode that if Scar was around in *relatively* modern times he'd be a monstrous lunatic who kills indiscriminately ?

        Anonymous

the moral is that in the modern society; Societal expectation, higher education and construction of objective/ religious morality has basically cut off any and every primal instincts we human have had back in the days of spear where we once view a kill or be kill lifestyle

However when we are confronted by the evil of something like the madman who is primal evil no different from the Krong & the ape-men, Red-Rexes & Night feeder we human for lack of the better term "Return to Monk" and devolve to destroy this evil

        that the primal theory

Yeah this episode is an absolute betrayal of the themes of the show. Previously it was just like Conan which showed that being savage doesn't mean being cruel, and being civilized doesn't mean being nice. Spear is depicted with being full of humanity, but Charles directly states that the Primal theory means they'll revert to a savage state at the cost of humanity which is the opposite moral.

Didn't he kinda do that in the last episode though? He showed at first that he didn't want to fight women and children but when he was put under extreme duress he wasn't having any more qualms.

What sort of situation would lead Spear to kill a bunch of British people. The "savage" inmate endangered its life to kill for no reason. That's nothing like Spear killing the Vikings.

Well I didn't know we were talking about that guy. I don't know. He was in an insane asylum, he was batshit. He was just there to represent the primeval threat that Charles mentioned.

I don't know how people missed this, he literally has the same teeth as Spear did on Aku Juice, and Darlington's reaction after what happened were 1 for 1 what we've seen Spear do after a fight he feels bad about.

Its a thesis statement for Gendy's anthology idea. Its going to be about people, in bad situations, going "primal" to survive and then dealing with the aftermath of that.

Even after watching the whole ep and seeing him shamelessly tear apart several innocent people, I’m still kinda on the fence about whether or not to sympathize with the madman, just because of how shit the mental health system he was in was.

If he was killing them, just because he didn't want to go back that would be one thing. Eating people is a straight no for me. It was a popular past time in this era to visit “bedlam” as a form of entertainment. It’s possible that any or all of the people in that mansion had gone to the asylum just down the street and had laugh at the guy.

He killed because he had no choice, he originally snuck in and tried to free the slaves, he came across sleeping Northmen and didn't kill them, he only let the Red Mist take him after suffering multiple injuries when they attacked him, the Primal inmate is killing for fun.

              Anonymous

              >the Primal inmate is killing for fun.
I think the key you're missing is that while the Inmate most closely resembles Spear in appearance and mannerisms he is not suppose to BE a modern version of him. He's a manifestation of the brutality of old way of life, a reminder to the civilized of society that man has not completely fallen away from their primal bestial instincts. Killing for sport alone is rare, even in Primal's world, but the Inmate is not the first one on the show to do it. The others that killed purely for sport were the Night Feeder and the Gorillas from season 1, both rightfully portrayed as cruel and evil.

                Anonymous

I agree, I don't really think he's supposed to be a modern representation of spear, just some psycho murderer who broke himself out of an asylum and is going on a rampage.

        Anonymous

Absolutely not. The madman is a threat to life and Darlington had to become a primitive berserker just like Spear to defend himself from the threat to his survival.
Just like Charles said: education, society and rules become devoid of meaning when man puts his drive to stay alive in face of imminent danger above anything.

funny you should mention that. i was the guy sucking off this episode a few threads back with the whole "first primal of the season" thing and now that i've watched it 6 times i'm starting to take back that opinion. the survival is really one sided in this episode, which takes the primal out of it and makes it a good guys vs bad guy thing. that kind of conflict goes against the SURVIVE aspect that season 1 had throughout its entirety. i was so distracted by main characters end goal that i missed that the antagonist has no goal and is acting completely randomly. the antagonist is an objective evil, something that primal survival shouldn't be

        Anonymous

I think my main problem with this season is that Survive isn't really a theme at the forefront of the show. Last season, everything they did was just to survive, this season, they actively go out on a non-survival based dangerous mission and get into predicaments from there.

I disagree. Spear and Fang have always acted upon motives a bit more complex than just survival. The 1st episode of the show has Spear putting his life at stake to protect Fang's kids, they return the mammoth tusk to the pack and have a reverence for their food, and Spear risked his life to save that ape-man from the man bats. They've always had a level of basic altruism and a respect for the natural order. Going on a journey to save their new friend doesn't seem too fetched.

            Anonymous

I agree, but then again, I think there's a big gap between the altruism you're talking about, and the amount Genndy's giving them, which is the main motivation for the plot of this season. Sure, if Mira had more development, I'd agree with you that they would do that, but to me, it's looking now like they're saving their third wheel. If the stakes were that they were separated with no Mira, the altruism they show episode to episode would be more believable.

Spear is just a pretty caring guy. He protected the kids of an animal he just met even after he lost his family so i don’t think he and Mira need THAT much more

                Anonymous

I do. Regardless, It's a better story if a newly introduced character has time to make an impression on the viewers, especially if it's a pivotal character like Mira. If they gave her 2 or more episodes before they had to go and save her I would care. Their is less incentive for the viewer who is supposed to relate to the main character(s) to care about an important McGuffin if that Mcguffin isn't expounded upon; or in this case, doesn't have time to be likeable. The reason Fang's near death mid season 1 was so impactful was because we knew her for 3 episodes beforehand. So it's not that i'm saying Spear is acting out of character, it's that Mira is not an important enough objective to base an entire half or more of a season saving.

What do you think Gennedy meant by this?
    >"I had a whole arc planned for the second season that initially was going to be part of the first season. But I realized there was so much more we could do in the first season, so we didn't need to bring in this new element. We pushed it to the second season, and then once we started to break it down, I realized we're kind of breaking what we've established, to a degree, and we're heading into the world of cliches. As soon as you introduce some kind of primitive early civilizations, you're instantly in 10,000 B.C. or Stargate, and all that stuff. It didn't feel right for Primal, so I had to rethink it."
    >"After that [Mira], that's where we got into a pause for a bit to figure out where we're going to go. Originally, of course, you have to do Egypt, right? Because that's one of the first civilizations with the overlord Pharaoh and slaves, but that's where it really broke for me. It just did not feel right at all. We restarted, and as I was digging through history, I came upon something that I never encountered before in early civilization. I got so excited for it, and it was the perfect vehicle for us for the second half of the season."

Neolithic and early bronze age would still be pretty advanced from Spear's point of view, so Genndy would have still had shit to work with. And he could have added some esoteric Atlantean/Hyperborean civilizations into the mix if he wanted. There would even still be dangerous animals all over the place like bears, lions, and aurochs. Magic and weremonsters would still be a thing. And they would probably be more refined from the primal shit they had experienced prior as well.

I think it would’ve been a little better if, at the end, instead of Charles having an excited reaction to it with his “THERE YOU HAVE IT!!!” if he was still in shock and disbelieve, but still wanted to prove his point, and saying it more bewilderedly like “Well... th-there you have it... I, uh, suppose...”

Also, if there were to be a Primal video game, what kind of game would you want it to be? A fighting game? A beat-em-up and/or hack-and-slash? Action-adventure? RPG? A mix of different things? Or if you have an example of an already existing game you could see it being like, or what you’d want it to be similar too, you can say that too, since some games sort of dabble in s lot of different genres and gameplay types, so that might be easier to mix-and-match that way.

I think Charles had a little moment of satiafaction since his colleagues mocked him for the theory but it ended up getting proven in the craziest way possible so that was his way of getting back at them.

I can kind of see that, but also two people entirely uninvolved with the taunting were murdered by the madman, the butler and the cook (whose body we don’t see, so there’s no telling what the lunatic did to that poor woman). I feel like it was played for laughs and comedy, like the human shield part, but it kind of came off as a little callous, character-wise (even if unintentional). Granted, this is the first time seeing those characters, so maybe that’s how he deals with excess adrenaline of almost being killed by a cannibal, like how some people deal with stress by joking about their less-than-ideal situations.

It does, I can see what you're saying, but Genndy's always had this kind of sense of humor. I do think your suggestion is an improvement. Congratulations, you understood what the narrative was going for, didn't complain, and made a perfectly sensible suggestion that doesn't spoil the joke and improves the delivery

I took it more as him processing everything that just happened and being a little delirious at the same time as he comes down from the adrenaline rush.

This definitely has to be a set-up by Charles. Real life asylum patients can't toss cabinets like they're nothing. There were many opportunities where he could have killed Darlington but didn't, and only put Charles in danger to make Darlington save him.

        Anonymous

At first, after seeing his reaction after the fact, I thought it was going to be a reveal like in that one episode of the Simpsons where it was all staged, somehow.

That actually fits MUCH better. And I think a Primal game would be a horror survival.

        Anonymous

        Thanks!
Oh, yeah, I had forgotten about survival horror, and there’s a lot of that in Primal, especially with the Night Feeder, those huge bat things and the spider, the witches, and the plague dino (and the madman in this recent episode). Maybe it could be a game that somehow combines action-adventure and survival horror? I feel like there’s some games that do just that, but my mind’s drawing a blank right now on any examples. Since, against “normal enemies”, Spear and Fang can really kick some tail, it’s just that when they go against “the unknown”, in a sense, is when they start really getting scared and running for their lives, before they figure out a way to either outsmart their pursuer or find a way to kill it.

Thank you! I appreciate that!
And yeah, I was going to also comment that Genndy always does like to add a bit of humor in things, even in serious situations. Especially on his works like Samurai Jack and Clone Wars (and Symbionic Titan, but I haven't seen that in YEARS)

I like how Darlington's instinctive reactions in a life-or-death situation make him look cool and badass up until the moment he actually manages to kill the guy. Darlington is a natural warrior, Even if he was just an oxnard boxing champion to even accomplish that you have some combat instinct and willpower.

          Anonymous

Along with boxing, he must've used some kinds of weapons in action before too. Since the butler addressed him rather than the other men when the Constable arrived, it must've been Darlington's house, which means the hunting trophies on the walls were also his.
His position in the society seemed to be higher than the others, too. He was the only character who was listed with the title "Lord" in the credits.

Just watched it and need some time to digest, but I think this was my favorite episode of the season. My guess is Gendy mostly made the episode as a proof of concept for the anthology direction he wants to go, and it was a massive success as far as I'm concerned. When he talked about it being done with a shared style I figured he meant it would all have minimal or no dialogue, but this showed how different the stories could be while still recognizable as part of the same series.

    >Darlington slits open the man’s stomach and stabs through his skull with a broken spear handle
Took me out of it, honestly, even for Primal. And I usually give this show a lot of leeway on the “realism.” I could’ve accepted it if it’d been a sword or something, but it was a splintered piece of wood. I think they were going for some kind of symbolism, but it was too much.

Other than that one little detail, 10/10 random episode of Love Death and Robots that seems to have been accidentally shuffled into the middle of the Adventures of Spear and Fang.

I live in a very wooded area, and have to pick up or drag fallen tree limbs and branches all the time. Some of the jagged edges can be pretty darn sharp, and could stab into s human easily, or cut someone. Sometimes the limbs fall into the ground sticking straight up, and are imbedded pretty deeply into the ground.

It might not cut someone far enough to where guts start spilling out (except maybe in some cases), but some of them could 100% be used stab someone. More fragile things than sharp sticks have killed people, like icicles

        Anonymous

That’s why I had no problem with Darlington stabbing the man with it over and over again, as he was when he stabbed his shoulder. It was when he side sliced right through the abdominal muscles and into the intestines like his gut was held in an old flour sack, and then also slammed the wood through the top of the skull, that got me. I fully believe that a good sharp piece of wood can cut somebody up and do real damage, but the human body is also not that flimsy around its vital organs.

Ok so the Darwin episode is decisive among us but do have to ask:

would you guys want the future episodes loop back around to the episode. Have it connect in a way like hard confirming that the madman is spear descendent or had some connection the horned god or the black goo? or do you guys just want it to be left alone as a random filler episode

You mean divisive. I personally thought it was a 10/10 with solid suspense and action as well as really strong themes that go hand and hand with the main narrative. Don't care too much if it plays directly into the main story. I feel it was meant to just get the audience thinking about Spear and his relationship with civilized society. If this episode was aired last in the season I feel people would be less critical and bothered by it.

I am fine with random filler if it thematically touches back on the main story like this one did. It feels like a good exploring of Primals themes and premise outside of the main plot-line.

It says it’s premise up front, makes it a punchline in the end, and still manages to execute on it perfectly. If you can’t appreciate this it’s your loss.

    I didn't care for it.
Yeah, even civilized humans can turn unga bunga when pushed to their limit, but did we really need an entire episode to get that point across?

Would this episode still be good if it wasn’t part of the Primal series in any way?

I would have liked it more if it weren’t in the primal series.

It would fit Love Death and Robots perfectly.

Yeah, it's a good self contained story. Everything in here is explained to you, and you can roll with the ride when it happens.

I've actively hated the last 3 episodes, and complained about them just being a bunch of human shit instead of fantasy monsters, but this episode was a breathe of fresh air.

      agreed.
hardly behavior one would expect from a supposed gentleman.
Though I can understand getting carried away by your passions in the heat of the moment.
For instance, the moment Charles suggested he and Darlington should have coitus with the holes now present in the bleeding madman.

This episode was suprisingly based, It was a couple of ballsy white men in victorian england fighting off a dark-skinned savage. I'm surprised this episode was allowed to happen, Gennedy tartokovsky must be secretly redpilled and racist to WILL something like this on the air despite primal already showing signs of cuckoldry.

Definitely a filler, but definitely enjoyable. I expected the episode to be tied in some way to the current events and I found it kinda cursed to have characters actually talk English in Primal, but it was a neat animation on its own, like an adaptation of some old British short story questioning the nature of man.

If Genndy and AS were just honest about what this was going to be I don’t think it would be nearly as divisive as it’s been

The episode description promised a lot, “a night of horrors” and “the origin of man” it could have just been “a group of scholars are hunted by a deranged madman” and it would have been way more accurate

          Anonymous

But you didn't pay attention to what they were saying and that it was a night of horrors where a madman was eating people. If they are too accurate you might as well just not air the episode and just tell audience the whole plot.

It was pretty good. I mean the episode was laying down the world building pretty thick here. Stating that humanity could evolve into spear when it had too.
It also explains why there are Dinosaurs and larger preditors again because the world reverted to a PRIMAL state.

Anyone calling this episode "filler" must be operating with a fried brain. The themes are very clear to the series. The connections are blatant. The Vikings will embrace their inner primal.

Filler just means it doesn’t move the plot along or change anything about the characters in any significant way. It’s enjoyable filler, but it’s still filler

        Anonymous

But it does move the plot along, it's literally telling us how the world Spear and Fang are in is the way it is.

            Anonymous

It literally just states that in the fricking episode. Do you even know who Charles is? That was Charles Darwin.
When he talked about birds and how humanity can revert to a primal state?
Then there is the show where fricking magic and dinosaurs roam the earth with humanity. If you couldn't put all that together when it was so obvious then you are oblivious.

To me Filler comes out of fear. So many episodes are given, and if you deviate from it it becomes 1 episode less. That if the finale feels rush, you go back and say if they didn't do that episode they could have done X episode to help the finale.

It's kind of like liking the art vs liking the artist

It may be an explanation on why the slaves or Vikings go insane. Otherwise we'd be full of anons posting "Why'd they'd suddenly lose their shit? Vikings shouldn't act like that" or it may be an explanation for Mira's breaking point and embracing her primal state.

I hate this way of thinking. Not every episode needs to move the plot along.

Pretty likely if its hunting, less likely if its protecting children.

It'll go for less harmful/dangerous prey if its looking for food, but if it's nest is somewhere nearby it'll do whatever it takes.

The whole point is to make yourself look bigger. Animals perceive things differently and even then it is never 100% certain you succeed, its just one of many survival tactics.

      Depends.
Wolves would almost certainly run unless very hungry. Big cats are a bit different. While all of them are ambush predators, not all felines are equal. A cougar might back down simply because it doesn't have the element of surprise. A tiger, on the other hand, is much more territorial and screaming at it might just instigate an attack rather than scare it away.
