The season 2 finale being a bit of a wet fart made everyone (here) retroactively feel like the whole show wasn't very special.
If a show isn't good the whole way through, it must be unpersoned. This is a Cinemaphile law and you won't be challenging it. It's why we hate Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Owl House, Amphibia and Star Vs.
There hasn't been a good cartoon since Over The Garden Wall in 2014.

How is it so hard to make your ending bad? All you need to do is NOT be stupid and realize "Deathbed sex with a burn victim" is awful.

The episode was really bad though. The primal half was fine enough but the half about the actual Simpsons was fricking terrible.
Bad news, this was one of the best recent episodes even without the Primal bits.
So they just spend the majority of the show's animation budget hiring guest animators now

When The Simpsons started, Genndy didn't even work in animation, now, he's noteworthy enough for his work to be referenced and is now considered an A-list cartoonist.
Simpsons isn't awful, but I don't think it'll ever be as good as those first 10 seasons. Just not a realistic goal to achieve. What they're doing now is still really cool, though. This Primal homage could've felt cheap and unearned, but I actually love how it was woven into Marge's spiral to her most primitive instincts in trying to protect Bart. The homage didn't feel as surface-level as I'd feared. There was a clear vision behind it.
