Seems like this episode is gonna be a big one. I wonder if a lot of the super-natural things we've seen (coven magic, Plague, Black Goo steroids) are gonna be related to 'man's origin'. Maybe the Red Mist ties into this too.
I'm really not interested in season 2 so far, I sort of miss when it was just fang and spear makin their way fricking around dodging giant bats and burning nightmare slashers and shit
That was quite an episode, caught me off-guard from the opening. I thought was trolling, and I was VERY surprised to find out he was not
and I may be dumb, but here's the thing. I ain't quite as dumb as I look. The theme of the episode got across to me very well, which doesn't happen in most cases. Wasn't as strong an episode as the others, but I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless
Holy shit, what a curveball of an episode. It mostly seems like a self-contained anthology episode to me. About how civilized man turn into savages in times of need like some kind of Lord of the Flies story. If I had to try and relate it to the main narrative, the inmates weird red eyes might be hinting to the idea that primitive man was created as some kind of war creatures by the big horned deity. Spear might actually have some kind of super-strength that he channels through a primal (ha) connection. Could explain why the future episode synopsis say that the Scorpion leader uses them as weapons.
Imagine only having 10 episodes and putting a filler episode in there

This episode is fantastic in a vacuum and I love seeing Primal tackle the new setting, but making it the mid-season climax is kinda weird. If this was the first S2 episode or some kind of special during the hiatus there'd be no complaints.

I think the primal theory is supposed to be an explanation for Spear's super strength and durability and why he's completely wrecking the vikings. Mankind was created with apex killing potential and combat prowess, but evolved away from those traits. Some people like the inmates and professor can tap into that power, and Spear, being less evolved, can go into it more easily. The red eyes motif on the prisoners could end up tying into the red mist and giant horned demon too. Maybe the giant demon is some kind of deity of violence and destruction that primitive people can tap into
This is based, far from the mindfrick that Genndy hyped it to be, but great set-up, action and climax nonetheless. That Oxford professor is a total baller

Hear me out, maybe Primal is the far future of our world, and these two history academic guys formed an illuminati-like secret society bent on enacting Robert E. I'm getting the impression that the people that strongly liked the episode are the ones that didn't see any of the really obvious plot beats coming. Were people really surprised after that intro that one of them would get forced into a life or death situation and have to go primal to survive?
There's no way it was going to be Charles after that joke about him being the wildman in the beginning.
I was a little disappointed it was so predictable. It was still a fine episode but it was also just the most standard execution of the plot possible. It felt like something I could have written, which is not a compliment, there's nothing in my head but cliches and tropes. It wasn't just predictable, it was rote. Well done rote, but still.
Hey, there's nothing necessarily wrong with cliches and tropes. They are tools that exist for a reason, be it for convention or subversion, and not everything has to subvert expectations. Sometimes a good story is just a good story

It doesn't have to be subversive to not just be a recital of the expected lines. If you retread an old path you should still try to put your own identity into it. Don't get me wrong, it's not like there was nothing of Genndy in this, it's just it wasn't Genndy's story, just basically him rattling off a standard list of cliches.
Part of that is the sudden inclusion of dialogue I think. Primal's biggest strength is how well it communicates to the viewer without ever once explicitly telling them anything, but this was the complete opposite of that, you get literally lectured on the topic in the first minute of the episode. It makes it feel a lot more "standard" than the rest of Primal, and the setup for the cliches a lot more obvious and telegraphed.
Just because it had an obvious setup doesn't mean it wasn't executed fricking amazingly. Being unexpected doesn't inherently dictate being good or not. The whole episode itself was unexpected.
So the main story is set in an alternate future where prehistoric creatures were brought back to life? And the madman probably shares some connection with the Horned King

Fang and spear have too much plot armor, the suspense of that giant fight never got me. These the scientists though, I didn't know if Genndy would let them be triumphant as a point or die until the end, as a point. It definitely was one of the few episodes that got me on edge, just like the plague of maddness. Literally the MOST suspenseful ep this season
This was the worst way they could have ended the hospital. Genndy said that he was interesting to expand Primal to other settings, but it would still have minimal dialogue. There was so much unnecessary speaking this episode that they could have went without.
A better way they could have ended this was a quick shot of the rich guy being locked in the asylum. That would tie things together regarding the inmate instead of it being a loose strand.

I know this is a nitpick, but I feel it would've been better if Charles went into a stress-induced giggle fit before he said it, as if there's still adrenaline rushing through him.

I've been thinking this since I started drawing paralells between Primal and one Gennedy's many series that never got off the ground, Kogarth. A lot about Primal seems like a spiritual successor to it, and I'm wondering if taking place in the impossibly far future, with multiple simultaneous apocalypses, plays into that.
Kogarth is more of a parody of Conan, whereas Primal is a more straightforward adaptation of its general style.
Moreover, I don't think you should reach to link every creation of a particular person to everything they worked on. At best they did it as a fun reference, but at worst you're making moronic schizo theroies that will never be fulfilled. Are you really telling me Kogarth was linked to Samurai Jack by way of a dozen or so apocaltyptic nuclear bombings?
I don't see how it's going to come back. It was just an episode that made the point "even civilized people can go primal when pushed too hard". The episode kinda reminded me of JLU's Epilogue too; a season finale with a timeskip away from the events that had just occurred. But at least that episode still had plenty of established DCAU characters in it, so it was more connected to the setting than this one was.

It’s heavily implied this is the twist of Primal, and Genndy mentioned it would be something people would hate. Meaning it’s not gonna be a one off if it’s connected to the grander Spear and Fang story
JLU had an episode called "The Epilogue". It was the finale for the season that had the Cadmus arc. But it was more of an epilogue for Batman Beyond than JLU.

Didn't hate it but I hope they don't do it again. Not what I want out of the show, save it for the anthology stuff later. The episode count is limited enough already.
As an episode, it was only decent. If it was part of an anthology thing instead of stealing an episode from Spear and Fang I'd have looked at it a little more fondly, but as is it's 7/10 or so at best, which is a definite low point for the series so far. I like "trapped in with a madman" style plots but as far as they go it was nothing special, the entire plot was obvious from the minute the constable walked in, ending included, and the ending punchline was so glaringly telegraphed it was almost surprising again that they actually went for it. So much so that I'm not even going to count it against them, I respect sticking to your guns, but it still didn't have much impact. And there was way too much dialogue. The voiceacting was fine and the writing was solid but it stands out too much, just the fact that there was so much dialogue kept making me overly aware of it. It would have been so easy to come up with an excuse to keep them from talking, and that would have tied it into the series way better. Also I can forgive a lot of rule-of-cool shit happening in a fight scene but come on, straight up slicing someone's stomach open with the end of a splintered stick is just dumb.
I'm interested to see if it does tie back into the main series some how. If it was just "we wanted to use an episode slot on this" then fine, it's not like it weakens the rest of the episodes or anything, but as is I don't really consider it part of the same show yet and it feels doomed to end up as "that one stupid episode" every time Primal comes up in the future. Hopefully they'll surprise me.

Primal Rage’s backstory is about a meteor crashing into Earth and destroying civilization hard enough for things to go back to being the Stone Age. Now, several beings come into play known as Gods, who seek out worshippers in this post apocalyptic caveman world. What if all of Primal is a reference to Primal Rage? I think it was an okay episode in a vacuum, but I can’t help but feel how random it is.
It felt like a random pilot slapped into the middle of an established story. And the description felt like a lie too, with the emphasis on the “origin of man” and that not being the point of the episode.

I went in completely blind and I loved this episode. It's so far out there and introduces a new persepective that makes us question what we really know about the show. Alongside the fact that we can actually understand it. The biggest highlight was the man going full primal and becoming like the Spear we know and love. We are primal and the primal theory is real
I went in blind and while it was very enjoyable putting this right after arguably the single most RIP AND TEAR episode of the entire series so far is somewhat baffling to me. We went from genocide and revenge to Charles Darwin playing Dead Money.

I like that even his boxing was considered a modern advancement, he had to let go of even hand to hand combat because it was tainted by developed techniques, he was still thinking too much rather than relying on his primal instincts.

To be fair, his boxing still seemed to be playing a factor in the final stage of the fight. He was slipping, side-stepping, looking for level-changing, except he was now using a weapon and like you guys are saying, trying to go for the kill, not a knockout. He was always a well-trained boxer, but his fear and the necessity for him to be P R I M A L honed whatever was muscle memory for him to be effectively lethal instead of being confined by a sporting ruleset.
I could see people being annoyed at the shift but at the same time this was one of the peak eras of interest in prehistory, neanderthals both in science and literature so that was a super cool touch
Genndy has been hyping this shit up as the “series changing twist” that plus the “we can’t show you anything” part of the marketing and the implications of the description set my expectations through the roof
I liked the episode as an entertaining piece of media but it was completely out of nowhere. Like, could you imagine buying a primal box set and then this plays in the middle of spear and fangs story?
I liked it it felt like Genndy was in a season drawing form primarily Conan but also Pulp in general, drawing from the other aspect, The Solomon Kaine and Doc Savage aspect while also keeping it inline with the rest of the show tonally.
I also think you all are looking for connections where there are non, its connected in theme but I don't think this is some super big lore revelation or anything it was said that after season 2 the series would follow different storylines after all. I think this was more a taste of what that could be like.
We have evolved beyond creation's expectations but under the right circumstance, had we been hyped up to creation, I assure you gentlemen that our evolution would have felt like a disappointment.

I like how this episode somewhat ties into what Spear and Fang went through in episode 4. Only thing is that when Spear and Fang fricking lost it they went double primal.

I disagree actually. There was nothing of Spear and Fang's relationship or the loss of a primitive man's place in a world that's leaving him behind. Basically all it had in common was particularly angry violence, which while fun and an important element is not what makes the show great. If there was nothing but action scenes Primal wouldn't be that interesting.
Ehh, I mean I heard the lecture at the start the same as you, but "neanderthal literally too angry to die" and "Darlington gets mad enough to shank a homie with a stick" doesn't have the weight of the character moments from Spear and Fang.
Honestly it didn't even do "abandon your humanity to survive" all that well. That's not a huge complaint because it's hard to do a big psychological thing in a single cartoon episode and they did play up the tension and danger really well which made the climax work, particularly with the soundtrack, but he still just got really mad and stabbed a homie with a stick. After several dozen failed gunshots that would have done quite well with the power of humanity if the giggahomie hadn't been spiderman and could dodge bullets.

I hope the anthology has more of the emotional bits tbh. If it's nothing but fighting not working until someone gets mad and yells loud enough I'll be pretty disappointed. Genddy talked about doing a WW2 thing and I could see it working, but not if it was done like this. You can have a scene where a guy yells and runs down a trench shotgunning gerries but that's just a shitty war movie, if he wants to actually sell it it needs the slow emotional bits that demonstrate the effect the war has on the character's humanity, not just them abandoning it.

It was the very opposite of this and that's what made it so thematically profound. Spear and what he represents will always be present in humanity no matter how far civilization goes.
The new episode was great. The asylum escapee basically went into full primal mode. The Primal Theory is basically human instinct for survival taking over. Its how Spear and Fang survived so much. Genndy is a genius.
This. Most people will never even consider, let alone experience, the sheer instinct for survival. We are incredibly far removed from the concept of hunting and working for our meal, and this is a perfect microcosm of what event he most educated an civilized can experience when faced with actual danger.

Hell naw, he'd have booked it as soon as guns started going off. There's easier prey, wild animals value self preservation over almost all else. That was just psychopathy. Spear understands hunting and values the life of the animal he takes, even if in a primitive way, and Fang is an animal that kills to eat naturally, that dude just wanted to murder people.
So the trick to Spear and Fang's plot armor is that they were focused on surviving, vikings fricked up by being the ones killing. Hm, I like the episode a bit more now.
I don't think the madman is a neanderthal, and he looks just like Spear if he was a convict. I think Spear might just be a regular ass human who just happens to be a little chunky. Hell, somo of the vikings had the same body proportions as him

If this latest episode took place millennia later in the same universe where Spear and Fang live, then it's gotta be an alternate universe that doesn't exactly match with ours. Not only do men live alongside with dinosaurs in this world, but there are also all kinds of impossible monsters and weird magical beings in it. And assuming that "Charles" was supposed to be Darwin, that doesn't match with our timeline either
Yes for simplicity's sake let's say my grandfather on my father's side was a neanderthal. My grandmother and other grandparents were all human. I'd still be descended from a neanderthal.
Sure, that's why it's not wrong, but it's also not the most accurate statement and is somewhat misleading by omission. Humans descended from early humans and there's a bit of genetic influence from neanderthals. There are neanderthals somewhere up your family tree(probably, depends on your ethnicity) but you'd still not really say "we are descended from them" in any but the specific case where you point at a particular branch. Darlington bringing up neanderthals instead of Primitive Man or homosexual erectus or whatever when talking about humanity's origins would be out of place for a student of evolution. At least with current knowledge, I have no idea what 1800s state of historical anthropology was, maybe they just thought neanderthals were cavemen and humans were post-cave. Or maybe that's just how Genndy is using it, it's not like scientific accuracy has been a sticking point before.

Africa, east Asia and and the middle east do not feature much if any neanderthal crossbreeding and stuff like Native Americans and Australian aboriginals likely had no contact with Neanderthals ever.

So, if we consider that mixing of neanthertal and sapiend gened what constitutes the modern human on Earth... you still saying they arent really human, at least not the same branch as modern man

For a long time people considered Neanderthals to be a stage in human evolution, not a side-species. Like you know that classic chart of monkey to man? It would usually put Neanderthal as the stage before homosexual Sapiens.

Maybe its a Time machine reference (the HG wells book was written around the same time the ep is). Spear and Mira's descendants evolved into either regular modern humans with high intellect and some turned into savage morlock creatures. The difference here is that the Eloi can go primal when they need to survive but the Morlocks can go psycho and kill for pleasure and not just for survival.

If you're expecting an actual episode of Primal it's gonna be a shock, but now that I'm getting over that I do love what this one was doing
Although I can't not say that as a vacuum not-episode of the regular show, the animation is much less polished than I think it could have been
I hope it isn't revealed whether the events of Spear and Fang take place in the distant past or future. It's better open ended. I predict this episode is setting up not only the anthology aspect, but that the viking will really go primal and so will the slaves.

This ep reminded me a bit of Predator. Powerful threat that wants to hunt taking people out one by one, ends up being defeated when the person remaining in the fight goes to their basic instincts.
It's more Lamarckism than Darwinian, at least I think. he's proposing that mutations that happen to the guy due to his environment are what gets passed to his offspring, like his speech of "we'd go back to savages if we were facing an evil threat". butthole guy didn't go back to caveman but he showed he has the capacity to.

Primal is a gore-y show so why not experiment with more horror elements? Putting it dead smack in the middle of what you're already setting up makes sense I guess.

I think the critical step to reception of the episode will be how able you are to come to terms with it being essentially a twenty minute long joke setting up Charles' final exclamation as the punchline

Only the most review brained idiots think that you can encapsulate storytelling on a numerical scale? Human emotions don't range from 1 to 10. I didn't particularly like this episode and it's my least favorite of the 15 so far. But what's the point of assigning a score to it? That does nothing to explain one's feelings on it and it creates an illusion that the episode could be compared to an episode from any other show that shares the same score. There's no reason to give a score on any episode. Just explain your feelings instead of hiding behind a number.
Yeah, I don't know why people can't get that we expected to see Spear and Fang and not some generic British people and a cliched movie monster in a murder mystery mansion that isn't even a mystery.
I loved seeing the new human groups this season. Their introduction was new and excited while still feeling like Primal. But I didn't want to just suddenly be pushed into 1800's Britain.

What the hell was up with the Savage. The whole point of Primal was showing the humanity of Spear, not "survival at the cost of humanity." Why did they just have a random dude with prison tattoos in 1800s England that just killed people for literally no reason, not even to survive.

The savage inmate is absolutely nothing like Spear. Neither Spear nor any of the animals in the show would kill for the sake of killing. Even the Witches killed for the sake of life. The inmate was just like that so he could be a scary evil villain, not to carry on the themes.

The inmate was likely a product of an environment that turned him into a psychopath. Probably treated like shit all his life for looking like a literal fricking monster in human form.
That's stereotypical and lazy. All creatures have reasons for their behavior, both in real life and the show before this point, even if it's something as petty as glory like with Krog. If there was an explanation for the inmate's behavior, I would guess it was to bring out the primal inside the rich dude because he specifically let him live and targeted Charles so he would resort to savagery.

That's just reality. Even modern society produces maniacs and lunatics. Thats the whole point and theme of the episode and its connection with the main story. The savagery of man can be brought out no matter the time period and no matter how above it we think ourselves. That inmate was an instance of that and he created another instance of it by pushing the professor into the most desperate situation. Both in completely different walks of life in modern society but exhibiting the same primal behaviors whem driven to it.

They clearly said "Surviving at the cost of humanity" when the inmate wasn't acting to survive but rather endangering its life to just kill people for no reason. Spear survives, but he doesn't lose his humanity to do so. The entire episode just felt like a cheap horror flick that was thematically bankrupt.

That's the thing. It isn't about survival. They call it "savagery." Belligerent violence. It doesn't matter the reason. The inmate is deranged but the professor fought the way he did to survive. Despite all the parallels the inmate had with Spear, it was the Professor who truly had more in common with Spear which drives the point home that we will always be that caveman deep down which calls into question what truly is humanity.

Typically to qualify as "Kino" characters behave in realistic ways regardless of setting with humans having complete psychological profiles and emotions instead of being one-dimensional movie monsters. All of Primal was Kino up until this episode.

It mostly seems like a self-contained anthology episode to me. About how civilized man turn into savages in times of need like some kind of Lord of the Flies story. If I had to try and relate it to the main narrative, the inmates weird red eyes might be hinting to the idea that primitive man was created as some kind of war creatures by the big horned deity. Spear might actually have some kind of super-strength that he channels through a primal (ha) connection. Could explain why the future episode synopsis say that the Scorpion leader uses them as weapons.

This episode is fantastic in a vacuum and I love seeing Primal tackle the new setting, but making it the mid-season climax is kinda weird. If this was the first S2 episode or some kind of special during the hiatus there'd be no complaints.

I think the primal theory is supposed to be an explanation for Spear's super strength and durability and why he's completely wrecking the vikings. Mankind was created with apex killing potential and combat prowess, but evolved away from those traits. Some people like the inmates and professor can tap into that power, and Spear, being less evolved, can go into it more easily. The red eyes motif on the prisoners could end up tying into the red mist and giant horned demon too. Maybe the giant demon is some kind of deity of violence and destruction that primitive people can tap into
It’s not really a mid season climax since there’s no break
This is based, far from the mindfrick that Genndy hyped it to be, but great set-up, action and climax nonetheless. That Oxford professor is a total baller

I was a little disappointed it was so predictable. It was still a fine episode but it was also just the most standard execution of the plot possible. It felt like something I could have written, which is not a compliment, there's nothing in my head but cliches and tropes. It wasn't just predictable, it was rote. Well done rote, but still.
Hey, there's nothing necessarily wrong with cliches and tropes. They are tools that exist for a reason, be it for convention or subversion, and not everything has to subvert expectations. Sometimes a good story is just a good story
It doesn't have to be subversive to not just be a recital of the expected lines. If you retread an old path you should still try to put your own identity into it. Don't get me wrong, it's not like there was nothing of Genndy in this, it's just it wasn't Genndy's story, just basically him rattling off a standard list of cliches.
Part of that is the sudden inclusion of dialogue I think. Primal's biggest strength is how well it communicates to the viewer without ever once explicitly telling them anything, but this was the complete opposite of that, you get literally lectured on the topic in the first minute of the episode. It makes it feel a lot more "standard" than the rest of Primal, and the setup for the cliches a lot more obvious and telegraphed.
I got that from the very beginning and I still loved it

Fang and spear have too much plot armor, the suspense of that giant fight never got me. These the scientists though, I didn't know if Genndy would let them be triumphant as a point or die until the end, as a point. It definitely was one of the few episodes that got me on edge, just like the plague of maddness. Literally the MOST suspenseful ep this season
This goes back to what I thought as a kid. Charles Darwin's a dick and nobody likes him.
This was the worst way they could have ended the hospital. Genndy said that he was interesting to expand Primal to other settings, but it would still have minimal dialogue. There was so much unnecessary speaking this episode that they could have went without.
A better way they could have ended this was a quick shot of the rich guy being locked in the asylum. That would tie things together regarding the inmate instead of it being a loose strand.
No the rick guy has to realize how easy is to devolve int savagery when push comes to shove, making him go crazy wouldn't work with that idea.

I took it as expressing the theme that the primal world and civilized world aren't very far off from each other
I've been thinking this since I started drawing paralells between Primal and one Gennedy's many series that never got off the ground, Kogarth. A lot about Primal seems like a spiritual successor to it, and I'm wondering if taking place in the impossibly far future, with multiple simultaneous apocalypses, plays into that.
Kogarth is more of a parody of Conan, whereas Primal is a more straightforward adaptation of its general style.
Moreover, I don't think you should reach to link every creation of a particular person to everything they worked on. At best they did it as a fun reference, but at worst you're making moronic schizo theroies that will never be fulfilled. Are you really telling me Kogarth was linked to Samurai Jack by way of a dozen or so apocaltyptic nuclear bombings?
Is Charles foreshadowing that Primal takes place in the far future?
Would be a fun twist, Charles ends up being Spear's ancestor rather than his descendant after some apocalyptic event forces all of humanity to revert.
Probably something to do with the Scorpion King. Maybe Wildman Apocalypse? Something similar to Evil Dead's Bad future ending.
I would totally watch an anthology series of people across time and place fending off primitive people.

I don't see how it's going to come back. It was just an episode that made the point "even civilized people can go primal when pushed too hard". It felt like it was done as a preview of what Genndy talked about at some point, about how he wants to make Primal into an anthology series with various different characters and settings:

The episode kinda reminded me of JLU's Epilogue too; a season finale with a timeskip away from the events that had just occurred. But at least that episode still had plenty of established DCAU characters in it, so it was more connected to the setting than this one was.

JLU had an episode called "The Epilogue". It was the finale for the season that had the Cadmus arc. But it was more of an epilogue for Batman Beyond than JLU.

Didn't hate it but I hope they don't do it again. Not what I want out of the show, save it for the anthology stuff later. The episode count is limited enough already.
As an episode, it was only decent. If it was part of an anthology thing instead of stealing an episode from Spear and Fang I'd have looked at it a little more fondly, but as is it's 7/10 or so at best, which is a definite low point for the series so far. I like "trapped in with a madman" style plots but as far as they go it was nothing special, the entire plot was obvious from the minute the constable walked in, ending included, and the ending punchline was so glaringly telegraphed it was almost surprising again that they actually went for it. So much so that I'm not even going to count it against them, I respect sticking to your guns, but it still didn't have much impact. And there was way too much dialogue. The voiceacting was fine and the writing was solid but it stands out too much, just the fact that there was so much dialogue kept making me overly aware of it. It would have been so easy to come up with an excuse to keep them from talking, and that would have tied it into the series way better. Also I can forgive a lot of rule-of-cool shit happening in a fight scene but come on, straight up slicing someone's stomach open with the end of a splintered stick is just dumb.
I'm interested to see if it does tie back into the main series some how. If it was just "we wanted to use an episode slot on this" then fine, it's not like it weakens the rest of the episodes or anything, but as is I don't really consider it part of the same show yet and it feels doomed to end up as "that one stupid episode" every time Primal comes up in the future. Hopefully they'll surprise me.

Now, several beings come into play known as Gods, who seek out worshippers in this post apocalyptic caveman world. What if all of Primal is a reference to Primal Rage? With the Scorpion King being one of those gods

I think it was an okay episode in a vacuum, but I can’t help but feel how random it is.
It felt like a random pilot slapped into the middle of an established story. And the description felt like a lie too, with the emphasis on the “origin of man” and that not being the point of the episode.
I can’t help but feel like I was robbed of a cool spear and fang adventure for whatever this was.

I went in completely blind and I loved this episode. It's so far out there and introduces a new persepective that makes us question what we really know about the show. Alongside the fact that we can actually understand it. The biggest highlight was the man going full primal and becoming like the Spear we know and love. We are primal and the primal theory is real
I loved it, to compare this to Smiling Friends go to Brazil which I was disappointed by, this was surprising but that surprise was an amazing episode.
I went in blind and while it was very enjoyable putting this right after arguably the single most RIP AND TEAR episode of the entire series so far is somewhat baffling to me. We went from genocide and revenge to Charles Darwin playing Dead Money.
I'd argue such an interesting intermission was necessary after that.

I noticed that too. This episode will filter people and we'll see who's paying attention to the themes of this show and who isn't.
I like that even his boxing was considered a modern advancement, he had to let go of even hand to hand combat because it was tainted by developed techniques, he was still thinking too much rather than relying on his primal instincts.
Fighting techniques put in rules and take out the lethality and the fight so to say. Specifically boxing is ment to harm and eventually subdue the opponent, not outright kill them. That's why Charles had to revert his instincts, because his modern ways couldn't get the job done.

To be fair, his boxing still seemed to be playing a factor in the final stage of the fight. He was slipping, side-stepping, looking for level-changing, except he was now using a weapon and like you guys are saying, trying to go for the kill, not a knockout. He was always a well-trained boxer, but his fear and the necessity for him to be P R I M A L honed whatever was muscle memory for him to be effectively lethal instead of being confined by a sporting ruleset.

I liked the episode as an entertaining piece of media but it was completely out of nowhere. Like, could you imagine buying a primal box set and then this plays in the middle of spear and fangs story?
I think it's better to look at it as an elaborate intermission
I liked it it felt like Genndy was in a season drawing form primarily Conan but also Pulp in general, drawing from the other aspect, The Solomon Kaine and Doc Savage aspect while also keeping it inline with the rest of the show tonally.
I also think you all are looking for connections where there are non, its connected in theme but I don't think this is some super big lore revelation or anything it was said that after season 2 the series would follow different storylines after all. I think this was more a taste of what that could be like.
It's pretty much a Howard Kirowan/Conrad story, all that's missing is a flashback.
I'm just glad the dumb alien theory didn't end up coming true.
We have evolved beyond creation's expectations but under the right circumstance, had we been hyped up to creation, I assure you gentlemen that our evolution would have felt like a disappointment.

I disagree actually. There was nothing of Spear and Fang's relationship or the loss of a primitive man's place in a world that's leaving him behind. Basically all it had in common was particularly angry violence, which while fun and an important element is not what makes the show great. If there was nothing but action scenes Primal wouldn't be that interesting.

Ehh, I mean I heard the lecture at the start the same as you, but "neanderthal literally too angry to die" and "Darlington gets mad enough to shank a homie with a stick" doesn't have the weight of the character moments from Spear and Fang.
Honestly it didn't even do "abandon your humanity to survive" all that well. That's not a huge complaint because it's hard to do a big psychological thing in a single cartoon episode and they did play up the tension and danger really well which made the climax work, particularly with the soundtrack, but he still just got really mad and stabbed a homie with a stick. After several dozen failed gunshots that would have done quite well with the power of humanity if the giggahomie hadn't been spiderman and could dodge bullets.
I hope the anthology has more of the emotional bits tbh. If it's nothing but fighting not working until someone gets mad and yells loud enough I'll be pretty disappointed. Genddy talked about doing a WW2 thing and I could see it working, but not if it was done like this. You can have a scene where a guy yells and runs down a trench shotgunning gerries but that's just a shitty war movie, if he wants to actually sell it it needs the slow emotional bits that demonstrate the effect the war has on the character's humanity, not just them abandoning it.
To synthesize here it feels like this episode taps into what the show beyond Spear and Fang is about.
Like season 2 is the last Spear and Fang season and if the show continues it will be with new stories. So when you remove Spear and Fang what are you left with?

This. Most people will never even consider, let alone experience, the sheer instinct for survival. We are incredibly far removed from the concept of hunting and working for our meal, and this is a perfect microcosm of what event he most educated an civilized can experience when faced with actual danger.

Hell naw, he'd have booked it as soon as guns started going off. There's easier prey, wild animals value self preservation over almost all else. That was just psychopathy. Spear understands hunting and values the life of the animal he takes, even if in a primitive way, and Fang is an animal that kills to eat naturally, that dude just wanted to murder people.
So the trick to Spear and Fang's plot armor is that they were focused on surviving, vikings fricked up by being the ones killing. Hm, I like the episode a bit more now.

Humans descended from early humans and there's a bit of genetic influence from neanderthals. There are neanderthals somewhere up your family tree(probably, depends on your ethnicity) but you'd still not really say "we are descended from them" in any but the specific case where you point at a particular branch. Darlington bringing up neanderthals instead of Primitive Man or homosexual erectus or whatever when talking about humanity's origins would be out of place for a student of evolution. The difference here is that the Eloi can go primal when they need to survive but the Morlocks can go psycho and kill for pleasure and not just for survival.

I think the critical step to reception of the episode will be how able you are to come to terms with it being essentially a twenty minute long joke setting up Charles' final exclamation as the punchline

I didn't particularly like this episode and it's my least favorite of the 15 so far. But what's the point of assigning a score to it? That does nothing to explain one's feelings on it and it creates an illusion that the episode could be compared to an episode from any other show that shares the same score. There's no reason to give a score on any episode. Just explain your feelings instead of hiding behind a number.

That's stereotypical and lazy. All creatures have reasons for their behavior, both in real life and the show before this point, even if it's something as petty as glory like with Krog. If there was an explanation for the inmate's behavior, I would guess it was to bring out the primal inside the rich dude because he specifically let him live and targeted Charles so he would resort to savagery.

That's just reality. Even modern society produces maniacs and lunatics. Thats the whole point and theme of the episode and its connection with the main story. The savagery of man can be brought out no matter the time period and no matter how above it we think ourselves. That inmate was an instance of that and he created another instance of it by pushing the professor into the most desperate situation. Both in completely different walks of life in modern society but exhibiting the same primal behaviors whem driven to it.
They clearly said "Surviving at the cost of humanity" when the inmate wasn't acting to survive but rather endangering its life to just kill people for no reason. Spear survives, but he doesn't lose his humanity to do so. The entire episode just felt like a cheap horror flick that was thematically bankrupt.
That's the thing. It isn't about survival. They call it "savagery." Belligerent violence. It doesn't matter the reason. The inmate is deranged but the professor fought the way he did to survive. Despite all the parallels the inmate had with Spear, it was the Professor who truly had more in common with Spear which drives the point home that we will always be that caveman deep down which calls into question what truly is humanity.
Then why was the inmate acting like that? Deranged people don't act like that except in the cheapest bargain bin horror flicks.

Typically to qualify as "Kino" characters behave in realistic ways regardless of setting with humans having complete psychological profiles and emotions instead of being one-dimensional movie monsters. All of Primal was Kino up until this episode.
There isn't anything absurd about the inmates behavior. He was a psycho who liked to kill and eat people and fought the group intelligently. The only difference between him and real typical serial killers is him just being a brute about it. Using someone as a shield and taking a second to toy with them isn't outlandish.

This was just like one of the short stories from my grandads collection. I loved it.
Someone that gets it. It specifically reminded me of that one HP Lovecraft story with a bunch of englishmen gathered to meet some guy who turned into an eldritch alien or whatever. But I think it's more specifically cribbing off HG Well's Time Machine, especially with the skepticism at the start.
