Why did Winnie the Pooh, a character in color, go public domain before Willie Mickey did?

        Anonymous

Because Pooh was a book character that predated Steamboat Willie

Heh, I can rememeber, back in that magical, far -off time called the Nineties, sitting at the mini-comics booth at Ozcon, and this group of snotty art-school preppies saunter up to us and ask "Are these free?" we say no, and they sniff and wander off, but spin round and come back at a flat run, "ARE THESE COPYRIGHT?" so we say "Yes." And they sniff and walk off again.

Fricking art school wankers, ripping off comics since Lichtenstein.

John Carter. Though it somehow still gets confusing because of Disney.

most of the books are public domain
the issue is the ERB estate likes to try to sue people who make derivative works without paying a licensing fee for using their trademarks

Why is there still an active estate for someone who died 75 years ago?

With John Carter, six of the 11 books are PD including the first one so he is PD but you have to make sure you don't use anything from the later books and other stuff

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Felix the cat at least the original versions. Could basically make a public domain version of the Animaniacs using those three.

The only one that truly matters our lord and savior Jesus Christ, thanks to the printing press and the hard work of missionaries it's now accessible to anyone who may want to learn the good word and how to be forgiven and saved

Doctor Omega is the funniest public domain character, 'cause his book is about a mysterious doctor with genius-level intelligence who travels across space and time alongside his companion in his spacecraft named Cosmos and battles strange evil aliens. The book came out in 1906, and the first episode of Doctor Who only came out in 1963, meaning this French dude did Doctor Who almost 60 years before it existed.
